Chapter 192: Splitting the Household Again

~4 min read 753 words

Seeing the situation soften, Qu Dayao stopped putting on airs, signaled to the people following behind him with a glance, and they filed in one by one, entering the house.

Hearing his brother-in-law's words, Liu Jianqiang's heart was actually moved; after all, given the family's current situation, splitting the household would be more beneficial for their small family.

Now the family had nothing but a mountain of debt, so it was better to split off and live separately; although they wouldn't get subsidies from the parents, it was still better than sharing the debt together.

Liu Shangan knew his in-law's elder brother had come prepared today and that the household would likely have to be split, so he stopped insisting, turned to his son, and asked, "Jianqiang, what do you think?"

Liu Jianqiang was not stupid: "I listen to Father."

Liu Shangan was somewhat satisfied with this answer but also knew his eldest son did not want to break relations with him; after all, having been beaten due to being implicated in the second son's matter, he naturally felt unhappy.

He sighed heavily in his heart: "I know that Brother-in-law's trip today is also for the sake of my own younger sister, and I can understand your feelings; no parents don't want their children to do well. Since you want them to split off and live separately, then let them split."

"However, the family..."

He deliberately paused there, causing Qu Dayao to frown immediately, thinking: Don't even think about making my sister share the debt; if that really happens, it would be better to just divorce.

Liu Jiantong's heart was also beating violently; he was terrified that his own father would make them share some of the debt, so he didn't dare blink, fearing that if he closed his eyes, his father would say something he didn't want to hear.

After Liu Shangan let out a long breath: "You all know the family's situation; splitting the household now means you won't get a single thing, so please understand, Brother-in-law."

Qu Dayao had been instructed by his family before coming, so he immediately took up the words: "We understand this clearly; naturally, the family won't abandon them either; we will definitely give them some support, more or less, to help the young couple get through this difficult time."

Before Ge Xiulan's water had even been brought in, the matter was settled.

Liu Shangan had Liu Jianqiang, despite his unhealed injuries, go find the village cadres.

The Party Secretary and the Village Head exchanged a glance, both seeing helplessness in each other's eyes; splitting the household three times within a month was truly an eye-opener.

Naturally, no brown sugar was borrowed; when Ge Xiulan saw the village cadres arrive, her heart gave a thud. She stepped into the room in a few strides: "Husband?"

Liu Shaliang dragged her out of the room: "Stop causing trouble; can't you see the situation today? If we don't split the household, Qiangzi will have to divorce. Do you want Qiangzi to become a widower and remain a bachelor for the rest of his life?"

Ge Xiulan was frightened; she unconsciously swallowed her saliva but muttered unwillingly: "I haven't even enjoyed the blessings of a daughter-in-law yet, and now I have to split them off?"

Although her mother-in-law had treated her quite well these past years, she had never been the one in charge; previously, she had been forced by her parents-in-law to split the household. Though she was angry, she felt it was okay since she could make her own decisions afterwards.

But this was the first split; she hadn't even exercised her rights as a mother-in-law yet, and the eldest daughter-in-law was already causing a fuss to split the household; it was truly suffocatingly frustrating.

This household split was simple, after all, there was nothing much to divide.

Ge Xiulan had originally wanted to hold some leverage over the house, but Qu Dayao's expression of "if it's not fair, then divorce" firmly held Liu Shangan and his wife in check, and the household division document was written quickly.

One room of the main house was allocated to Liu Jianqiang, and one room of the east wing was also allocated to him; as for the south rooms, they could only be given half a room, since a main gate would likely need to be opened there in the future.

Qu Dayao knew when to stop and didn't really fuss too much over that half room of the south rooms.
