Chapter 255: Token of Gratitude

~5 min read 853 words

Liu Chuxue smiled and took out more than a dozen wild chicken eggs from below: "Just right to go with these wild chicken eggs."

Liu's mother thought her second daughter's luck was too good, her face beaming as she said: "With these wild chicken eggs, it would be hard for the buns' filling not to taste good."

Liu's mother saw quite a few small miscellaneous fish in the carrying basket: "How did you catch so many small miscellaneous fish?"

By then, Liu's father had already brought out a basin: "Are you going to make miscellaneous fish soup?"

Liu Chuxue waved her hand and said: "No, I want to try making some snacks for my older sister; she is pregnant now and needs nutrition."

Hearing his daughter's words, Liu's father was stunned for a moment: "Then tell me how to handle them, and I will do it."

Liu Chuxue did not refuse: "Okay."

After picking the small miscellaneous fish into the basin, the rest were the fish for the token of gratitude: "Dad, while everyone hasn't finished work yet, let's go deliver the things; there should be someone home."

Liu's father nodded: "Alright, I'll listen to you."

Arriving first at the village head's house, it just so happened that the village head's family had relatives visiting; his wife, Liu Yingchun, was in the courtyard keeping them company and chatting. Seeing Liu Chuxue and the others come in, she said: "Why do you father and daughter have time to come over?"

Liu's father smiled and replied: "So many things happened in our family before; thanks to the village head's help. Now that the house is built and we have free hands, I thought we should come over to express our gratitude."

Speaking, he took a fish from the carrying basket Liu Chuxue was wearing on her back: "This is what Liu Chuxue caught this morning; please don't dislike it. Add it as a dish for your lunch."

The village head was a son-in-law who moved into his wife's family. His wife, Liu Yingchun, had only one daughter in her family. Their eldest was a daughter named Liu Tingting, the second was a son named Liu Yongfu. Later, when they had a younger son, Liu Yingchun took charge and let him take the surname Deng, naming him Deng Yongsheng.

Deng Huaiming, though he entered the family as a recruited son-in-law, was capable. Although it was true that back then, because the family had many children, he became a son-in-law who moved in, he and Liu Yingchun were not a blind marriage; they had already felt mutual affection before.

Liu Yingchun was a straightforward person: "Oh my, that was all something he ought to do; you are being too polite."

Liu Chuxue smiled and said: "Aunt Yingchun, this is just a small token of our appreciation; please accept it."

Seeing that the father and daughter were sincerely offering it, Liu Yingchun did not decline further: "Just right, since relatives have come to the house, now they will have good fortune to eat."

Coming out from the village head's house, they went to the secretary's house.

They happened to meet the secretary returning at the main gate: "Secretary Grandpa."

The secretary looked at the father and daughter: "Why did you come over at this time?"

Liu's father picked out the largest one: "You have worried a lot for us during this period. Liu Chuxue caught a few fish this morning; I brought one over for you. Let Auntie add a dish for your lunch."

Seeing their posture, the secretary knew they were going to other houses as well. During this time, because of the matter concerning the fifth family, he had indeed run around a lot. Regardless, this was the child's filial piety: "Alright, I will accept this fish. Live your own lives well from now on. But wait a moment; we grew a few gourds at home. This year, they bore fruit very densely. I will go pick a few for you. Stir-frying them while they are tender to eat with hand-pulled noodles is very delicious."

The father and daughter did not refuse; Liu Chuxue even smiled and replied: "I have been wanting to eat a meal of stir-fried gourd slices with hand-pulled noodles for a long time; now it is finally settled."

Hearing these words, the secretary's face was full of smiles: "Wait, I will go pick them for you."

As soon as he entered the courtyard, he shouted: "Old woman, get a large tray for me."

From the kitchen came: "What do you need a tray for?"

Looking at the head sticking out from the kitchen: "Shanliang and the others sent a fish over; I am going to pick a few gourds for them so they can stir-fry and eat them when they return."

The secretary's wife quickly brought out a large tray, handing it to her old man while waving at Liu Chuxue and her father, and smilingly said to her old man: "Pick a few more for them; stir-fried gourd slices mixed with dry noodles are the most delicious."
