Chapter 399: Worry, Run Fast
Liu Chuxue didn't quite grasp the meaning of her words, glanced around the room, suddenly realized something, and said to Ji Kunlan, who had just pushed the door open: "Kunlan, I'll go find some curtains later; we can hang one in the middle so it'll be more convenient to change clothes and such."
Ji Kunlan nodded and replied: "Alright, you prepare the things; we'll just split the cost fifty-fifty when the time comes."
Liu Chuxue didn't refuse either.
After entering, Ji Kunlan walked straight to the window and looked down from it: "She said she'd go back home and return after dinner; why hasn't she arrived yet?"
Hearing her words, Liu Chuxue looked at the night outside and couldn't help but grow worried: "Should we go out to meet her?"
Ji Kunlan glanced at the watch on her wrist again: "That works; let's wait for her at the bus stop in front of the factory gate."
Liu Chuxue quickly got up, put on her outer coat directly, and went out of the dormitory with Ji Kunlan.
It was just that Ji Kunlan's expression wasn't very pleasant; Liu Chuxue had wanted to ask a question, but thinking they had only just met, she feared asking something inappropriate would make things awkward, so she swallowed the words that had reached her lips.
Unexpectedly, Ji Kunlan took the initiative to speak: "Duan Ruirui's mother passed away from illness the winter before last; her father has a soft, weak personality, and now her two elder sisters-in-law call the shots in the house. Before, Duan Ruirui was still young, and since she was in mourning, her sisters-in-law hadn't dared to treat her too harshly."
"Now that Duan Ruirui has reached the age, both sisters-in-law have set their sights on her. Earlier, Duan Ruirui told me that both sisters-in-law wanted to use her marriage to pave the way for their own small families, but she saw through it and refused."
Hearing this, how could Liu Chuxue not understand? Truly, every family has its own difficult scriptures to chant.
The two chatted all the way out of the factory gate and then headed toward the nearest bus stop.
Seeing that Liu Chuxue had remained silent, Ji Kunlan continued: "I'm afraid those two sisters-in-law will resort to tricks to force her into compliance."
"Is there a public phone near her house?"
Ji Kunlan shook her head: "She never mentioned it."
"Is her house far from here?"
Ji Kunlan nodded: "Just taking the bus takes over an hour; otherwise, she wouldn't have chosen to live in the dormitory. She has her own room at home."
"Then there's nothing else we can do; we can only wait here and see."
The two didn't walk toward the bus stop; they stopped not far from it, so that as soon as Duan Ruirui got off the bus, they would be able to see her.
However, this wait lasted an hour; Ji Kunlan looked at the watch on her wrist again: "It's ten o'clock; if we wait five more minutes, we'll have to head back."
As she spoke, a bus pulled over to the side, but the two did not see the person they were waiting for.
Ji Kunlan's face was full of worry: "Liu Chuxue, do you think something really bad might have happened?"
There was no way to respond to that; just now, Ji Kunlan had said she had never been to Duan Ruirui's house either. Even if they wanted to go to her home to look for her, they couldn't manage it, let alone report to the police based on their mere speculation. If the person was fine, they would only end up causing trouble for themselves.
Time ticked by second by second; just as the two were about to return in disappointment, a bus stopped, and Duan Ruirui got off the vehicle.
She looked up and saw Ji Kunlan and Liu Chuxue: "Why are you two here?"
Ji Kunlan stepped forward a few paces: "Are you alright? Why did you come back so late?"
While speaking, she also scanned the person up and down.
Seeing that she was fine, she finally felt relieved.
Seeing this action, Duan Ruirui instantly understood something; it would be false to say she wasn't moved.
At this moment, Liu Chuxue spoke up to remind: "It's getting late; if we dawdle any longer, we won't be able to get into the dormitory."
The three exchanged glances, disregarded saying anything else, and shouted in unison: "Run fast."
