Chapter 530: Sister Hong's Reminder

~5 min read 821 words

Coming out of the Section Chief's office, she had just sat down at her workstation when Wan Xiaohui on her left leaned over: "A call from your partner?"

Liu Chuxue didn't hide it, smiling and nodding: "Yes."

Seeing Liu Chuxue admit it, Wan Xiaohui asked: "Where does your partner work?"

Liu Chuxue, while putting the abacus beads back in place beside her, said: "He's a soldier."

Wan Xiaohui's eyes lit up: "Where is he stationed?"

Seeing her expression, Liu Chuxue found it a little hard to answer.

Hong-jie across the diagonal seemed to read her difficulty: "Chuxue, is the work in your hands finished? I still have some materials here that need you to help me sort out."

Those words were a timely rescue: "Coming right now."

Saying so, with one hand flipping through the accounts and the other flicking the abacus beads, after a clatter of clicking sounds, she finished reconciling the accounts.

Confirming there were no problems, she then put the account book back in the drawer and locked it, stood up and went to Hong-jie's side: "Hong-jie."

Hong-jie glanced toward Wan Xiaohui, picked up a stack of materials on the desk: "Following the order on the table of contents, supplement and organize the materials. They'll be needed for the meeting tomorrow afternoon."

Liu Chuxue took them: "Alright, no problem."

After returning to her seat, she kept busy until nearly the end of the morning shift, finally wrapping up that stretch of work.

She stood up and returned the materials to Hong-jie: "Hong-jie, please look them over and see if anything still needs revising."

Hong-jie hadn't expected her to finish so quickly, and after flipping through them was quite impressed: "Comrade Xiao Liu, you're really quite capable—far better than I imagined. Alright, leave them with me for now. I'll look them over this afternoon, and if there's any problem I'll come find you."

Liu Chuxue smiled and acknowledged, preparing to leave.

Seeing Wan Xiaohui wasn't at her seat, Hong-jie said quietly: "Wan Xiaohui used to have a partner who was in the military, but later it fell through. That girl, though, doesn't know what stubborn streak got into her—she just locked horns with the other side. No matter what anyone says, she's dead set on finding a soldier more impressive than her ex."

But her family absolutely won't agree, and because of this there's been no shortage of unpleasantness. If she happens to make some inappropriate request of you, just keep an extra eye out."

Liu Chuxue hadn't expected such a backstory—no wonder Wan Xiaohui had been so excited upon learning her partner was in the military: "Thank you for the reminder, Hong-jie."

The moment she said this, she heard the click of small high heels behind her, knew Wan Xiaohui had returned, and the two exchanged a knowing glance: "Hong-jie, if there's any problem just let me know and I'll revise it."

Hong-jie nodded at her.

Liu Chuxue had just turned and returned to her desk, not yet sat down, when she heard someone at the office door say: "Accountant Liu, someone's looking for you at the factory gate."

No need to ask who it was: "Alright, I'm coming right now."

It was almost lunchtime. She tidied her desk, picked up the cloth bag with her lunchbox, and seeing everyone else packing up too: "Hong-jie, I'll head off first."

Hong Chunmei waved her off: "Go on, quick."

When Liu Chuxue reached the factory gate, the Zhang family was already waiting there. Eldest Sister Zhang, seeing her come out: "Girl Chuxue."

Liu Chuxue greeted the gatekeeper, then pulled the family aside: "I did manage to find out some news. Zhang Erzhu was set up, but the evidence isn't complete yet—the case is still under investigation."

Zhang Taohua, hearing this, burst into tears at once: "I just knew Erzhu wasn't that kind of person. His health is poor, and he'd finally gotten a job he liked—how could he possibly ruin his own future?"

Standing behind her, Ruan Xiaozao—that is, Qiu family's eldest uncle's wife's younger sister—patted her chest: "Oh thank goodness, as long as it has nothing to do with him it's fine. If the family really produced someone doing time behind bars, the children at home would probably suffer along with them."

Indeed, in these times people care most about class background—once Zhang Erzhu broke the law, his family would certainly be dragged down with him.

Liu Dazhu had also changed his previous attitude—probably afraid Liu Chuxue wouldn't help and putting on an act. Now he was considerably more polite, and with reddened eyes said: "Thank you. There's one more thing I'd like to trouble you with—we want to see my brother. I don't know if you could help us."

It was simply that they'd gone several times, and the other side only had one answer: until the case is cleared up, no one in custody can receive visitors.
