Chapter 663: I Wouldn't Dare Deceive You Even If I Deceived Everyone Else

~4 min read 733 words

Qi Shufang had some idea of this Red Committee second-in-command's temperament: "Brother Yao, rest assured—I wouldn't dare deceive you even if I deceived everyone else."

That remark did please Yao Qidong. He toyed with the jade bracelet and waved Qi Shufang off: "Go back and wait for word."

Liu Chuxue was afraid Liu Chuxue wouldn't have the energy for work tomorrow: "Xiao Guo is here with me, so you should head back to the guesthouse early to rest. You absolutely can't let it affect your work tomorrow."

Liu Chuxue had wanted to scold him a little, but then remembered he had only acted so recklessly because of her: "Got it. I'll change your dressing and then head back to the guesthouse."

Fu Yan Cheng hadn't really wanted her to change it, since earlier in his haste, a few spots on his already-scabbed back had started bleeding again, and he didn't want her to worry.

Liu Chuxue didn't give him the chance to shoo her away. She turned and went out to find a nurse, then came back with bandages and wound medicine: "Lie down on your stomach."

After saying that, she shot Xiao Guo a look.

Xiao Guo hurried off to borrow a folding screen and pushed it next to the bed.

With his help, the whole process didn't take long. After confirming the wound on his back was truly fine, Liu Chuxue finally felt at ease.

After helping tidy everything up: "Then I'll head back to the guesthouse. I have to catch an early bus tomorrow, so I won't come by. Once there's news on things here, have Xiao Guo let me know."

Just as she was really about to leave, Fu Yan Cheng couldn't bear to part: "Xue'er, once I'm discharged in a few days, I'll come see you."

Remembering something: "Oh right, the matter you asked me to look into last time—I've got some leads. By the time I'm discharged and come find you, I should be able to confirm it."

"Okay."

Fu Yan Cheng saw she wasn't being polite with him, and his heart leapt with joy—it meant Xue'er considered him one of her own.

But then he heard Liu Chuxue add: "Thanks."

Fu Yan Cheng stared into Liu Chuxue's eyes: "Your business is my business. We're engaged, after all—you don't need to stand on ceremony with me."

Liu Chuxue could easily read his thoughts: "Got it. I won't be polite with you from now on."

Fu Yan Cheng's brow finally smoothed: "That's more like it."

Seeing Xiao Guo come in with water, ready to wash him down, Liu Chuxue finally took her leave.

Fu Yan Cheng tried to get up to see her off, but Liu Chuxue stopped him: "I just re-dressed and bandaged your wound—do you want all my effort to be wasted?"

Fu Yan Cheng could only watch her leave.

Once she was gone, Company Commander Su, who had been holding it in for a while, spoke up: "You clearly can't bear to let her go, yet you still say one thing and mean another, telling her to head back to the guesthouse early to rest. Our very own Deputy Battalion Commander Fu has now joined the ranks of the iron-hearted yet tender."

Fu Yan Cheng shot him a look: "A man without even a girlfriend—what would you know?"

With that, he turned his face away.

Company Commander Su, hearing that: "Hey, how'd it turn into a psychic attack?"

Political Instructor Guo on the other side, watching the two clown around, burst out laughing.

Furious, Company Commander Su: "What are you laughing at? You're no different from me—a lone bachelor."

Political Instructor Guo, however, said leisurely: "At least I've had a girlfriend and taken a wife."

Company Commander Su got even angrier: "Hey, you guys—you really are something."

Seeing he couldn't continue, everyone in the room burst into laughter.

Company Commander Su, seeing how things stood, gave up any thought of defending himself: "Fine, fine, fine. If making you all laugh counts as a contribution, then so be it. Just you wait—once I'm discharged I'll call home and have them arrange something for me."

Everyone, hearing him say that, laughed even harder.

Company Commander Su, seeing how unkind they were being, said helplessly: "All right, that's enough out of you. Aren't you afraid you'll split your stitches laughing, or pull a muscle from laughing too hard?"
