Chapter 6: An Unexpected Incident
The next day, as the sky just began to lighten, Su Qing woke up.
He lazily yawned, then heard a noisy clamor from outside the room: "Trash, get up and start working…"
The scolding was so piercing that his previously foggy mind instantly cleared; he subconsciously tried to sit up, and only after throwing off the covers did he realize he was no longer a laborer and didn't have to do hard labor anymore.
"Damn, I've even triggered a stress reaction."
Su Qing, sitting slumped on the bed, cursed under his breath as he recalled being whipped awake; his hatred for the mine's overseers grew, especially their boss, Zhang Lei.
Just thinking about that pervert who's fixated on his body made Su Qing's brows knit.
Although he had become a translator yesterday, thanks to John's favor, he was spared from Zhang Lei's persecution.
But that was only superficial; who knew what dirty tricks they might be plotting behind the scenes!
"A worthless piece of trash."
Su Qing silently sighed at his bad luck, then pondered the lowly werewolf blood in John's veins.
Before crossing over, he had watched many Western fantasy films and was very familiar with werewolves as supernatural beings, knowing there was such a setting, namely:
Werewolves can turn ordinary people into werewolves through a bite.
So, he now wonders:
Whether John, this werewolf, also has that setting?
Then perhaps…?
Su Qing hastily stopped that childish thought.
Leaving aside whether John can or not, if he could, how would one get him to open his mouth?
Would one just walk up to him bluntly, reveal his true nature, and then beg him to bite oneself?
Just thinking about it is impossible, and it's far too dangerous.
A moment's carelessness and one's life would be over.
By this point, Su Qing instead recalled another matter.
According to Western folklore, where there are werewolves there are always vampires, and they are arch‑enemies.
What's more, vampires also possess self‑healing ability, nearly on par with werewolves.
But when it comes to combat prowess, werewolves still have the edge, at least in that regard.
However.
If he had to choose, Su Qing would still lean more toward vampires.
Although individual vampires are weaker in combat than werewolves, overall vampires are stronger.
Because once werewolves transform,
their reason plummets, they become brutal and only know to charge wildly—essentially a brainless berserker, easily kited and prone to capsizing in a gutter.
He doesn't want to end up as a brainless oaf.
So vampires are still more suitable for him.
Suddenly, the weather changed.
A cool breeze slipped through the curtain and brushed Su Qing's cheeks.
The morning air was cool but not biting, yet it made him shiver.
"Slap!!!"
Su Qing came to, blinked, then gave himself a hard slap—being able to survive in this situation is already not bad, yet he's still picking and choosing; he really deserves that slap.
After the slap, his restless thoughts also faded.
He got up, ate the potatoes he had snatched the night before to fill his stomach, and Su Qing began his day's work.
Actually, there wasn't much to do.
It was just going to John's residence to teach him the East Nation's script, and incidentally following him to the mine for a walk.
The laborers saw the former "pale face," the man Zhang Lei had taken a liking to, climbing up to the high branch of John the overseer, and each reacted differently—some mocking, some envious, some contemptuous, and some even glaring with hostility.
As for that,
Su Qing chose to ignore it.
Only when he saw Wang Zhiqiu's complex expression did he nod and smile, letting the nearby overseer, by the fox‑borrowing‑the‑tiger's‑might effect, pay extra attention to him.
After all, it was thanks to the other's help (though the other didn't know it) that he could become a translator, and since their relationship was still decent, he was willing to look out for him if he could.
Over the next few days, Su Qing did translation work while resting his body.
Unfortunately, the camp's food was terrible, and the cook, a rustic old woman, only knew how to make: mashed potatoes with ham slices, mashed potatoes with beans, mashed potatoes with vegetables…
Such food, meal after meal.
Even though Su Qing was a farmhand who grew up eating potatoes, his scalp went numb from the boredom, let alone making up for his bodily deficiencies.
Not vomiting was already a good thing.
That day, after Su Qing had just finished lunch and dealt with a hygiene issue, he heard a wolf howl in the distance.
"Ooooh…"
The wolf's howl was high‑pitched, echoing throughout the camp and lingering on.
Su Qing shook the water from his hands, looked toward the sound's source, and wondered aloud, "Why is it howling in broad daylight? Aren't wolves nocturnal?"
Having said that, he then suddenly realized.
It's not only wolves that can howl; werewolves can too.
Perhaps the one making the noise is a werewolf.
But it's not certain either; wolves are nocturnal, true, but who said they can't appear during the day?
Su Qing gathered his thoughts, turned around, and went back to work.
Inside the camp were kept a dozen or so horses; frightened by the howl, they leapt over the fence and ran amok, while the cowboys were in pursuit, creating a chaotic mess.
After several twists and turns, Su Qing finally arrived outside John's small building.
Just as he approached, he heard arguing voices coming from inside.
"You damn bastard."
"Oh, John, saying that hurts me."
"Your appearance makes me nauseous."
"John, don't forget we once..."
"..."
There were two voices speaking, one John's, the other unclear.
Su Qing's steps paused at the door, then without the slightest hesitation he turned and left.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as wished.
He had only taken two or three steps when the door was shoved open violently.
Then John's voice came: "I don't welcome you here."
Hearing that, Su Qing knew he couldn't leave.
He quickly turned around, pretending to have just arrived, and stared at the doorway with a look of astonishment.
He saw John talking with a burly bald man, his face grim.
The bald man seemed not to notice John's murderous look, earnestly advising: "We are clansmen; we should help each other."
"Enough." John glanced at Su Qing, whose eyes were full of clear stupidity, and said coldly.
"All right, my friend."
The bald man shrugged his shoulders somewhat disappointedly, then said: "Let me stay here for a night to rest, that should be fine, right?"
"No!"
"John, you..."
"I said no."
After being refused again, the bald man turned his head toward Su Qing, who stood frozen, his tone somewhat unfriendly: "John, don't forget who saved you from those stinking bats back then!"
"You..." John's face turned livid, his fists clenched.
Finally, after a brief consideration, he reluctantly agreed to the other's request, but also added his own condition: "You may stay one night, but you must leave at dawn tomorrow, and thereafter you must not pester me."
"Okay."
The bald man agreed without a second thought.
Seeing this, John's expression softened a little.
Su Qing, watching this from the side, thought to himself: "Poor kid, he actually believed it!"
The two made the agreement, and there was nothing left to talk about.
John first summoned a patrolling cowboy to take the bald man to arrange lodging, then turned and gave Su Qing a scrutinizing look from head to toe, smiling: "Su, good afternoon!"
"You too, Mr. John."
Su Qing wore a smile and appeared natural, but inside he was panicking.
When John and the bald man were arguing just now, he took the chance to glance at the bald man and discovered that his body also displayed a "low-grade werewolf bloodline."
This shows the bald man is also a werewolf; combined with the earlier howling, it's obvious this guy's doing.
I just don't know what this guy came to find John for.
Moreover.
Having overheard their conversation, will I be silenced by murder?
Su Qing looked at John, seeing that he seemed to have forgotten the earlier unpleasantness, his expression normal as he communicated with him.
This scene caused Su Qing's clenched hands to relax.
But his heart did not relax at all; instead, it tightened, and he secretly made a decision.
He couldn't wait; living such a precarious life was too stifling and miserable, so just in case, he would start downloading John's low-grade werewolf bloodline first thing tomorrow morning.
The two entered the living room one after the other and continued studying the Eastern State script.
After an unknown amount of time, the sky grew close to dusk, and Su Qing rubbed his sore neck.
Beside him, John rose, glanced at the sky, closed his book, and smiled: "Su, it's getting late; you should head back first!"
"Okay, Mr. John, see you tomorrow." Su Qing replied with a smile.
"Goodbye." John nodded, his eyes deep with meaning.
After bidding farewell to John, Su Qing left the small building and headed straight for the cafeteria.
"Sorry, Su."
John stood where he was, watching the retreating back, a look of regret crossing his face; after several days of contact, he felt very favorably toward Su Qing, they got along well, and he had originally wanted to cultivate Su Qing as his confidant.
If possible, he truly did not want to hurt him.
Unfortunately, he heard what he shouldn't have.
After sighing to himself for a moment, John beckoned a cowboy over and whispered to him:
"Go call Zhang to see me."
