Chapter 191: Love Has No Fairness

~8 min read 1,464 words

Suppressing the chaos and arrogance surging within her, she traveled from the Southern Black Kingdom to Chris's home, an unconscious expectation, as if from some vague subconscious, she regarded that place as a remedy capable of soothing her turbulent emotions.

Upon arrival, Chris was in his study reading a script; he had recently intended to accept a new film and resume his work.

"What kind of story is it?" Yang Yi asked, sitting in the single armchair by the window, smiling as she spoke.

"It follows current events, a story about people at the bottom of the city struggling to survive after a disaster..." Chris explained while flipping through the pages.

"Sounds like an award-winning film," Yang Yi said, her tone laced with sarcasm.

Chris paused, lifting his head to look at her: "What? Do you have an opinion on this script?"

Yang Yi shook her head. "I'm afraid my opinion might be offensive, so I'd better not say it."

"Then I'm even more interested," Chris raised his eyebrows. He set down the script, stepped out from behind the desk to stand before Yang Yi, placed his hands on either side of the armchair, and nearly trapped her in his embrace. "Tell me, darling."

Yang Yi felt slightly uncomfortable with this posture, leaning back until her back pressed against the chair. "I just think it's a bit ridiculous: a group of upper-class people who lack for nothing wanting to make a film about the plight of the lower class to earn money from the middle class..."

Chris studied her expression carefully, straightened his waist to lean against the desk edge, and crossed his arms. "Darling, I don't deny that this film has that factor; it's part of capital operation. But there are also positive aspects. For instance, this film can raise people's awareness of the lower class. Only by raising awareness can there be improvement, right?"

"Yes, what you say makes sense. Then why not make a documentary?"

"No one would go to the cinema to watch a documentary! People just want to grab some popcorn on the weekend and watch a film that is either relaxing or explosive to relax their bodies and minds," Chris smiled lightly.

"You're right!" Yang Yi couldn't help but laugh. Her gaze scrutinized Chris from bottom to top, from feet to head, making him feel somewhat nervous before she slowly said, "But darling, your face... really isn't suitable for playing a character mired in the lower class..."

"Then challenge yourself," Chris said. "As for the rest, I will strive to choose a good team."

"Alright," Yang Yi nodded.

Gradually, her gaze grew hazy, staring out the window at the lake in a daze.

Chris leaned against the desk edge, quietly observing her for a while.

"Darling, is something on your mind?"

"Why do you ask that?" Yang Yi came back to her senses.

"Just a feeling."

Yang Yi said nothing. After a long moment, she slowly said, "I'm in a bad mood." She then asked, "Was my tone too harsh just now? Was I just making trouble for no reason?"

"You're a bit cynical today," Chris said with a smile. "I've discovered a new side of you, but I like it too."

Yang Yi smiled awkwardly. "When I'm in a bad mood, I have nowhere to go, so I can only come find you. I hope I haven't caused you any trouble." Her tone was very polite.

Chris licked his lips, squatted down, held her hands, and looked up at her: "Darling, don't speak to me so politely." He lowered his head and kissed the back of her hand. "You coming to me when you're in a bad mood makes me very happy, because it means I hold a special place in your heart—that makes me feel honored."

A hint of shyness appeared on Yang Yi's otherwise expressionless face.

"Do you love me?" Suddenly, Yang Yi asked.

"Of course." Chris stood up, scooped her up in one motion, sat down in the single armchair himself, placed her on his lap, and wrapped his arms around her. "Do you still doubt this until now?"

Startled by his movement, Yang Yi instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck. The two now clung tightly together, their breaths mingling, almost indistinguishable from one another.

Chris's right hand supported the back of her head. As they drew closer and closer, at the moment their lips met, Chris suddenly asked, "Darling, then do you love me?"

Yang Yi looked at him in confusion, as if she didn't understand what question he had asked. Gradually, her gaze cleared; she pecked his lips, trying to brush it off: "Didn't I already express my feelings to you that night?"

"But you have never truly opened your heart to me," Chris remained unmoved, still gazing at her.

Yang Yi averted her gaze and said lightly, "Romance and passion may only need a moment, but love and trust require much longer time."

I might love you a little, but not enough to entrust everything to you—Chris deciphered her subtext. A blockage formed in his heart, and the heart beneath his ribs throbbed with a sour, aching pain.

Chris knew he was acting too hastily, but he couldn't help it.

He and Yang Yi had been secretly dating for half a year. During these six months, his feelings for her had grown day by day, becoming so intense that they could no longer be suppressed.

He once believed that love was merely a passion with a limit of only three months, sometimes even fading before three months were up.

When you are attracted to someone of the opposite sex, finding in their appearance, physique, personality, temperament, and speech, as well as in the things you yourself lack, a reflection of yourself—affection sprouts. Under the influence of hormones, love burns rapidly like a wildfire in an autumn field—leaving nothing but scorched earth behind.

He once thought his feelings for Yang Yi would be the same, like his previous relationships that ended without result, with passion slowly dissipating within three months.

However, the wildfire that once could only burn an autumn field has now spread to the entire forest—no, no, the fire has raced along the forest straight down to the molten magma at the earth's core, and will boil forever until the moment the Earth declares its death.

He couldn't wait to get a promise, something definite, something that could reassure him—something that could calm his boiling, restless, greedy, and craving heart.

Torment.

After vaguely discovering his true thoughts, every moment was torment.

And right now, he was nothing—Yang Yi had never revealed his identity, never publicly acknowledged their relationship, and never truly opened her heart to him. Perhaps she was closer to that Hou Jue than she was to him—sometimes he couldn't help but think with burning jealousy.

Sometimes, watching her figure fly away, he suddenly felt she might leave forever and never return. There were no realistic bonds between them—only his one-sided outpouring of love.

She often disappeared from his life for days, even ten or more days without a word. To him, it was like a hotel or a shop; she would drop by when she remembered, and leave when she no longer needed it.

She was hot and cold toward him, distant yet close. Although he told her he loved her herself, including these hot-and-cold attitudes, that was under his expectation that she would eventually return his love. After his feelings became increasingly difficult to suppress while she still lingered in place, this became unbearable and damaged his pride.

"Darling, why don't we talk about your past?" Chris suppressed the rising anger and unease in his heart.

"There's nothing worth talking about; they are all unpleasant things," Yang Yi said, her eyes turning back to the window.

She suddenly wanted to leave this place. Let's see—what work is left undone?

Chris pressed his lips together, stretched out his long arm, turned the laptop around, and opened the news. The screen displayed the events that had just occurred in the Southern Black Kingdom.

"I was just watching news about you. It's too absurd; reporters actually suspect you are an evil god..."

Yang Yi suddenly stood up from his lap, straightened her clothes, and said, "I remember there is still some work to do; I must return."

With that, she turned and left, not even looking at him once.

However, her arm was tightly grasped. Chris could no longer endure it; he stood up abruptly. "Yang Yi, what do you take me for? A pet you can casually pet whenever you remember? A hotel you can come to and leave from whenever you please? I am a person! Look at me—I am a person with flesh, blood, and feelings!"
