Chapter 106: Ji Lao Investigates Shen Xun
Professor Cheng did not immediately reply to Ji Lao, but waited most of the day and only agreed before bedtime, thus seeming highly credible.
Ji Lao put away his phone and asked the servant, "How has Shutong been these past two days?"
"Apart from meal times, Miss Lin either stays in her room or in the study."
"Not even the courtyard?" Ji Lao frowned slightly.
The servant shook his/her head.
Ji Lao looked up toward the study and the upstairs, asking, "Where is the person now?"
The servant replied, "Miss Lin is in her room."
"Hmm." Ji Lao personally went to Lin Shutong's room door and knocked.
At that moment Lin Shutong was on the phone; hearing the movement, she immediately turned and asked, "Who is it?"
Actually, she had somewhat guessed who it was.
"Me." Ji Lao's loud voice sounded.
Lin Shutong did not immediately open the door, but instead said to Shen Xun on the phone, "My grandfather has come; I'll contact you later."
"Ah Xun, I love you, bye-bye."
After hanging up, Lin Shutong went to open the door, deliberately putting on an unhappy expression.
Ji Lao looked at her and said, "Still angry?"
"I wouldn't dare to be angry with my grandfather," Lin Shutong said, her tone carrying a hint of being spoiled; Ji Lao did not get angry at her tone, after all, he was the one who raised her himself.
Lin Shutong stepped aside to let Ji Lao in.
Ji Lao looked at her messy room and habitually complained, "A girl, and she doesn't like to tidy up at all."
Lin Shutong immediately ran over, grabbed the clothes on the chair, and handed them to the servant.
The servant began tidying the room.
Ji Lao challenged, "Why don't you usually come to tidy Shutong's room?"
The servant looked embarrassed.
Although Ji Lao said Miss Lin doesn't like to tidy up, he actually meant no blame; asking why they don't come to tidy Miss Lin's room would be entirely blameful.
Everyone in the Ji Family knows that Miss Lin is deeply favored by Ji Lao; regarding Miss Lin, they must be extra careful.
It's not that they don't come to tidy Miss Lin's room; it's that Miss Lin won't open the door, and they can't just force their way in.
"Grandfather, it's just that I don't want anyone to disturb me," Lin Shutong said; after she finished, Ji Lao stopped blaming the servant.
The servants breathed a sigh of relief; fortunately, Miss Lin is not spoiled.
Seeing that Ji Lao had something to say to her, Lin Shutong promptly urged the servants to leave and then closed the door.
"Grandfather, why are you looking for me so late? Is there something?"
"Let me tell you about the bidding meeting the day after tomorrow; Professor Cheng has already agreed."
"Really? Let me have that position?" Lin Shutong thought clearly that standing in Professor Cheng's position would give her a bright future, and moreover she is so young.
But also because she is too young.
"Grandfather, what if someone doubts it?" Lin Shutong still felt a bit worried, after all, the signing ceremony and project completion would be in the news.
Ji Lao gestured for her to relax: "Professor Cheng said, you are an outstanding young person; now is the era of young people, letting young people show their faces is no problem, he originally takes cultivating young people as his duty."
"Did Professor Cheng really say that?"
"Yes, that's exactly what he said; rest assured, these years you've published papers, and the big and small research projects you completed abroad are all there; if someone questions it, just put it out there—everything is compliant. Grandfather isn't a god; if you had no talent, he couldn't get you into the project team, otherwise if investigated, he'd suffer too."
Lin Shutong laughed: "Thank you, grandfather; I know whatever you do is for my good."
"You know it yet you're still angry with grandfather here."
"Not angry."
Lin Shutong shook Ji Lao's arm, just like when she was little; a simple gesture could make Ji Lao burst into laughter.
"Weren't you just on the phone with that young man named Shen Xun?"
"Yes." Lin Shutong nodded; mentioning Shen Xun made her expression turn a bit shy.
Ji Lao was also curious about this young man whom his granddaughter constantly thinks of.
"You mean you've been abroad for four years, and he's been waiting for you all this time?"
"Yes, and moreover he flies over every year to spend my birthday with me; I just didn't tell grandfather." Lin Shutong said, "I'm not not telling grandfather; I'm afraid he'll think I only care about dating and not doing research, and Shen Xun also fears disturbing me, so he restrains himself from contacting me too much, but whenever I need something, I seek him out and he always obliges."
Ji Lao nodded, his eyes showing a hint of satisfaction.
"Then in these four years, domestically, he hasn't been seeing other women?"
Lin Shutong froze.
She immediately said, "No, how could that be? Ah Xun could never like another woman, let alone have a relationship with another; he said he would only have children with me."
Ji Lao glared at her: "You're not even married, nor have you met the parents for an engagement, and yet you talk about having children."
Elders are generally conservative.
Having been abroad, Lin Shutong is also quite open-minded; she doesn't care about those things, but deep down she thinks that if she had a child, she could marry Shen Xun.
Shen Xun is fundamentally a responsible man; part of the reason he doesn't divorce Jiang Lai is this—he feels he ought to bear some responsibility for Jiang Lai and cannot simply abandon her.
Grasping this point, a child would become her most advantageous weapon.
The last time after drinking, they did not take precautions.
It's almost been a month; if her period doesn't come in a couple of days, she will go to the hospital for a check-up.
"Shutong, what are you thinking about?" Ji Lao noticed she had fallen into contemplation.
Lin Shutong snapped out of it and said directly, "I'm thinking about Ah Xun; grandfather, you promised to help him—Ah Xun is very ambitious and works hard, and this project is very important to him."
"I know." Ji Lao gave her an annoyed glance, "You always think of others."
"What other person? Ah Xun will someday be your grandson-in-law!"
"You say you're not ashamed, yet you still don't change." Ji Lao looked at her and reminded, "That day, dress a bit more properly, and also, don't wear overly expensive clothes, and even more so, don't carry a very expensive bag."
He repeatedly gave orders.
Lin Shutong also knew that on that day she couldn't be so ostentatious; she nodded and said, "I know what's important, Grandfather."
As long as you know.
"Then Grandfather, can I go out tomorrow? Buying clothes should be fine, right?" Lin Shutong's eyes lit up a little.
Ji Lao worried she wouldn't behave, shook his head and refused: "No, you stay honestly at home, and on that day you'll go with me."
Lin Shutong looked helpless: "I haven't seen Ah Xun in a long time."
"Shen Xun, Shen Xun, you only know Shen Xun; with this time you'd be better off reading two more papers." Ji Lao got a little angry.
Lin Shutong didn't dare mention it again, quickly closing her mouth.
"Okay, I'll listen to Grandfather."
"Listening to me is definitely right." Ji Lao stood up, went out and summoned the steward: "Go check on Shen Xun at Star Universe Technology, especially whether he has gotten close to any women these past four years."
