Chapter 107: Shen Xun Puts His Wedding Ring Back On

~7 min read 1,339 words

The day before the bidding meeting, Shen Xun naturally needed to go home to tidy up properly, so he could be in his best shape for the challenge tomorrow.

He returned home to find the door ajar, and a faint aroma of food drifting out.

"Jiang Lai? You're back." Shen Xun pushed open the door; his parents and sister were sitting on the living-room sofa. He froze for a moment, his eyes sweeping toward the kitchen.

It was a plump figure bustling about in the kitchen.

It was the nanny.

It wasn't Jiang Lai.

Mother Shen saw a flicker of disappointment in her son's eyes and felt speechless, but tomorrow was the day he would sign the big project, so they had to make him happy.

"Son, you're back—come eat some fruit; the meal will be ready soon."

"Dad, Mom, little Xi." Shen Xun called out, took off his coat and hung it up, "I'll go change first."

"All right, go ahead."

Father Shen watched his son enter the room, then sat up straight again, turning to admonish his daughter: "You'd better remember today—absolutely no doing anything that would upset your brother, and no saying anything that would upset him."

Shen Xi pouted: "Mom just wants me to stop talking about Jiang Lai, right? What can I say? Jiang Lai cleaned the house spotless, neat as a pin, as if she were about to go on a trip."

Father Shen tilted his head: "Don't even mention her."

"Oh." Shen Xi munched fruit, "Who'd want to bring her up? Even mentioning her makes me nauseous."

Shen Xun came out in comfortable home clothes, and Mother Shen immediately nudged her daughter's hand, signaling her to be quiet.

Shen Xi shut up at once and kept eating fruit nonstop.

Shen Xun sat on the sofa, took out his phone to call Jiang Lai—since the whole family was there, he couldn't leave her out again.

Besides, whenever he had an important event the next day, Jiang Lai would always prepare a delicious meal in advance to celebrate.

But today there was no response.

Father Shen caught sight of his son trying to contact Jiang Lai and immediately called out: "When we arrived, we called Jiang Lai; she said she had something come up and can't return."

Shen Xun frowned slightly: "You called Jiang Lai?"

"I made the call, not your mother or your sister." Father Shen knew what his son was thinking—nothing more than worrying they might say something inappropriate to Jiang Lai.

Seeing that it was his father who had called, Shen Xun relaxed.

His father was the only one in the family who was relatively fair and strict.

But he still wanted to call Jiang Lai—she'd quit her job; couldn't she spare time to come home for a family meal?

"How come you're wearing the ring again?" Father Shen interrupted his action once more, "You haven't worn it in a while."

"Why wear a ring after divorcing?" Father Shen thought to himself.

Shen Xun raised his hand, looked at the ring on his finger, his eyes flickering: "This is my and Jiang Lai's wedding ring."

Father Shen certainly knew.

He really couldn't figure out what his son was thinking anymore.

He claimed he was only worried the divorce would affect his career, yet he silently slipped the wedding ring back on.

That won't do.

Especially tomorrow, when Lin Shutong's maternal grandfather will also be there—seeing him wear the wedding ring would be unacceptable.

No elder would like their beloved child to be ambiguous with a married man, especially in an academic family where face is everything.

"Wearing the ring at home is fine, but tomorrow's occasion isn't appropriate for it." Father Shen reminded him, "Don't make a mistake in the details."

Shen Xun read the meaning of those words from his father's eyes.

He gazed at the ring in his hand.

Father Shen said, "Take it off today, so you won't forget tomorrow, panic, pull it off hastily, and lose it."

That last remark was indeed Shen Xun's worry, so he had no choice but to take the ring off and put it in his wallet.

His wallet already held a ring; now the two lay together, just like him and Jiang Lai side by side.

Shen Xun curled the corners of his mouth, his brows and eyes soft.

Father Shen looked at the two rings in the transparent compartment of his wallet and asked, "How come Jiang Lai's ring is also in your hand?"

He actually meant to remind his son: Jiang Lai had taken off her ring, so what are you still wearing yours for?

"She's always treasured our rings; she takes them off when doing housework, so she probably just forgot to put it back on this time. I was afraid of losing it, so I kept it on me." After explaining, Shen Xun put his wallet back.

The family sat at the dinner table to eat.

Shen Xun took a photo and shared it with Jiang Lai.

"【Dad said you have something today and can't come back to eat together—what's up?】"

Jiang Lai didn't reply.

At that moment she was sitting in Nanshan Shu Jiuhao, having dinner with the master's wife, Uncle Deng, Professor Cheng and his wife, and Xiao Qian.

The atmosphere was warm and harmonious.

The master's wife several times had tears welling up, saying, "Finally this day has arrived; Old Cui, watching from heaven, can finally rest easy."

Professor Cheng's wife then passed over a tissue, sighing, "Our Old Cheng can finally get some proper rest, keep me and our daughter company—though he won't stay idle for long, will he?"

"Well, it's not selling patents; it's a cooperation, and there's still plenty to do afterward." Professor Cheng chuckled, patting his wife's hand: "Thank you for your hard work, madam."

"It's fine; I and our daughter are actually quite proud of you." Professor Cheng's wife gave him a bite of food.

Xiao Qian then said, "After tomorrow I'll tell my parents exactly what I've been doing; all these years they've worried I'd gotten into multi-level marketing, and if the police hadn't specially gone to tell them to stop asking, they'd definitely be questioning me nonstop every day."

Everyone laughed.

Finally, everyone's gaze turned to Jiang Lai, wondering what she was thinking at that moment.

Jiang Lai said, "I plan to practice my signature two more times tonight."

Everyone blinked, then laughed again.

The master's wife asked, "And tomorrow?"

Jiang Lai: "Tomorrow's affairs, as long as they go smoothly tomorrow, then continue to do this project well."

Professor Cheng asked: "Only do this one project?"

Jiang Lai thought for a moment, shook her head: "Not exactly."

Everyone could see she already had an idea in mind; as for what idea, they also didn't feel comfortable asking further.

To ensure everything goes smoothly tomorrow, nobody drank alcohol, just had some juice; after clinking glasses, Professor Cheng reminded Jiang Lai: "You need to pay attention to safety when you go out tomorrow; although the research institute assigned you bodyguards, you should also be careful yourself, especially regarding food and drink, don't mind my nagging."

"I know." Jiang Lai said, "I won't have any trouble; these days Lin Shutong hasn't been very well-behaved, has he? As for him, I won't cause any trouble."

Both the mistress and Professor Cheng knew that the 'he' Jiang Lai referred to was Shen Xun.

Professor Cheng's wife and Xiao Qian, although not entirely clear, also didn't ask further, silently eating.

Suddenly.

Someone pressed the doorbell.

The mistress: "Who would come at this hour? Does anyone know you live here?"

Jiang Lai thought of a person: "It could be Chongying."

The mistress nodded: "Ke Family Eldest Miss, as long as it's not the Ke Family Young Master, the Ke Family Eldest Miss shouldn't be able to guess anything."

"I'll go check." Jiang Lai walked to the entrance and looked through the display screen.

Indeed, speak of the devil.

At the entrance stood Ke Zhongyu.
