Chapter 185: Seeking a Remarriage

~8 min read 1,472 words

Chi Family Medical Clinic.

Jiang Lai leisurely ate hot pot, mostly vegetables, and eventually ate herself full.

Chi Grandma said, "Drink some broth; the original broth turns the original food."

Chi Ce replied, "This broth doesn't taste as good as it did at the start."

At that moment, Ke Zhongyu placed the bowl of broth he had originally served in front of Jiang Lai, his broad palm covering the whole bowl, blue veins surfacing on the back of his hand.

"Drink mine; it's not cold, it's never been touched."

The man's voice was deep and slow, ringing in Jiang Lai's ear like a feather lightly brushing.

A ripple flickered in Jiang Lai's eyes.

"Thank you."

"Mm."

The Fu siblings left, and the opposite seat became vacant; Ke Zhongyu remained seated beside Jiang Lai, as silently taciturn as ever, the aura of indifference around him unchanged.

Yet, a subtle emotion hidden beneath his eyes was invisible to others.

For instance, when he saw Jiang Lai drink the hot broth he claimed was for himself but was actually reserved for her, the upward curve at the corner of Ke Zhongyu's eye was so faint it was barely visible, yet a trace of satisfaction still showed in his eyes.

Yes, satisfaction.

It was not simple joy, not flamboyant affection, but a bone‑deep, consistently cloaked indifference yet comfortably secure satisfaction.

Like a project to which one devotes oneself, silently passing a quiet phase until the crucial milestone finally settles, feeling satisfied by the other's liking and actions.

Jiang Lai truly has been divorced, and Ke Zhongyu truly likes her.

Liking and loving are the most unreasonable things in the world, with no rules at all.

Chi Ce watched the atmosphere between the two, which seemed unfamiliar to outsiders yet impenetrable, and remained silent.

This lunch turned out overly convoluted; they suddenly decided on a dangui lamb hot pot, simmering lamb bones from noon until two o'clock, then midway a Shen Xun appeared, and they finally finished the meal at four p. m.

Dinner was skipped.

After the meal, Ke Zhongyu went back to the Ke Clan, and Jiang Lai was taken by him to the company.

Jiang Lai intended to stop by the Research and Development Center, but Ke Zhongyu lowered his gaze at her with a "you try walking" look, exceedingly cold and solemn.

Jiang Lai halted.

Ke Zhongyu slightly lifted his chin, pointed to his elevator, and with thin crimson lips said, "It's fifty minutes until 5:52."

Jiang Lai: "5:52?"

What 5:52?

Ke Zhongyu: "A day, missing even a minute doesn't count as a day."

Jiang Lai understood.

The favor still owed required fifty more minutes to be repaid.

She is still, in name, Ke Zhongyu's girlfriend, and he wants her to go to the President's Office.

What for at the President's Office?

To work together?

To wait for him after work?

Before Jiang Lai could finish her confusion, Ke Zhongyu's palm lightly pushed her lower back, and her foot stepped forward into the elevator.

Ke Zhongyu entered the elevator shortly after.

The elevator doors closed before Jiang Lai could react; she asked a question she herself thought foolish: "Do girlfriends accompany boyfriends to work?"

Ke Zhongyu nodded and corrected, "Boyfriends also accompany girlfriends to work, and wait for the other when they finish."

"Jiang Lai, forget Shen Xun's approach toward you; he isn't human and doesn't know how to treat people."

"Also forget the lifestyle system you had at the Shen Family; the Shen Family has no normal people."

Jiang Lai's heart jolted.

She had seen few family models—mentor and his wife, Professor Cheng and his wife—but all were incomplete.

The only complete family model she had ever seen was the Shen Family; after leaving it, the other complete model she encountered was Ke Zhongyu's family.

By comparison, the Shen Family was indeed abnormal.

Jiang Lai solemnly nodded, "Understood."

Ke Zhongyu subtly lifted the corner of his lip, "Mm."

The two walked into the office.

She discovered her desk was still there, and the things left had not been cleared away.

Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan saw her, their eyes brightening as they tried to call her over, but with Ke Zhongyu standing beside Jiang Lai like a deity of the sect, they hesitated.

Jiang Lai, however, naturally walked toward them and said, "Ke Zhongyu, you go attend to your work; I'll sit outside."

Secretary Guan's eyes widened, lips tightly pressed.

Oh? Ke Zhongyu, isn't he now Ke President?

Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan exchanged a meaningful glance.

As Jiang Lai sat down, Ke Zhongyu stretched his long legs into the office; having left early in the afternoon, he now had to make up the time, and it would be a long while before he could spare a glance at Jiang Lai outside.

5:52 had long passed.

He deliberately didn't remind her.

Jiang Lai also forgot the time, typing on the computer the company had previously provided her, her fingers dancing over the keys.

Secretary Cen glanced at it unintentionally.

"Mm."

"I don't understand."

She is a liberal arts student.

The 9 a. m. multinational conference—Ke Zhongyu didn't know how long it would last; Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan get overtime pay, but Jiang Lai gets none, so Ke Zhongyu told the driver to send Jiang Lai back.

Jiang Lai stretched lazily, saved the documents, waved goodbye to Secretary Cen and Secretary Guan, then sent a message to Ke Zhongyu.

Jiang Lai: "I'll head back first, Ke Zhongyu."

Ke Zhongyu: "Mo Yi has prepared a late‑night snack for you."

A faint smile spread at the corner of Jiang Lai's lips, and on the way back she felt a strange happiness.

Yet that pleasure vanished completely when she saw Shen Xun standing at the doorway as she got out of the car.

Shen Xun stood at the main gate; the hair he had meticulously styled that afternoon was now disheveled, and his sleeves and pant legs bore marks of being clawed and bitten.

Two German Shepherds bared their fangs, the bodyguards holding them tightly.

It seemed a big fight had already taken place.

A bodyguard said Shen Xun had been waiting here since 7 p. m.; the big German Shepherd and the little shepherd wouldn't leave, and they almost bit the person.

Because they didn't bite, Shen Xun, like a dead pig unafraid of boiling water, persisted in waiting here.

Shen Xun saw Jiang Lai, his reddened eyes lit up, and stepped forward, calling her: "Jiang Lai…"

The big German Shepherd and the little shepherd barked wildly at him and blocked in front of Jiang Lai.

Shen Xun immediately stopped and didn't dare to advance.

"Miss Jiang!" Mo Yi stepped out, still holding a shovel, apron around her, "Come quickly, the snack is ready."

Jiang Lai didn't glance at Shen Xun, gave a faint smile and said to Mo Yi, "I'm here, Mo Yi."

"Jiang Lai!" Shen Xun, seeing Jiang Lai refuse to speak a word to him, was bitten on the leg by the dog, restrained by the bodyguard, yet he rushed forward, straining to reach Jiang Lai's wrist, gripping it tightly even though the fierce dog's fangs had already sunk into his flesh.

Shen Xun, as if fearing death, his eyes reddened, said, "I don't accept it. I never went to sign and collect the divorce certificate. Our divorce is invalid, invalid, I tore up the divorce certificate!"

Jiang Lai turned, looked at his painful and disheveled appearance, and showed no reaction.

"If it's torn, it's torn. Our divorce information is already logged in the system; whether you acknowledge it or not doesn't matter."

"Shen Xun, our marital relationship has ended."

"No!" Shen Xun shook his head, "I was wrong, Jiang Lai. I shouldn't have been entangled with Lin Shutong, I shouldn't have turned a blind eye to the difficulties you faced at home. I was wrong, give me another chance, okay?"

"These are my cards, all my bank cards, credit cards…" Shen Xun took his cards from his wallet, then pulled out his phone, "Here are my funds, my stocks. I bought you a Porsche, originally a gift for you, but I never got the chance to give it to you."

He took out the car key, intending to hand it to Jiang Lai.

Jiang Lai stepped back: "I don't need it. That divorce agreement is the best gift you've given me."

Shen Xun shook his head, denying all of it.

Seeing she was unmoved, he raised his hand and carefully placed the ring on his ring finger.

"Jiang Lai, this is our wedding ring. I will never take it off again. Let's remarry, shall we remarry?"

"Is that okay?" his tone was light yet heavy, afraid to scare Jiang Lai, yet afraid Jiang Lai might not understand his determination to have her back.
