Chapter 412: This Person Is So Terrifying

~8 min read 1,429 words

Li Dan heard Gu Zhiyan say all this made his head spin; he had no idea how to comfort him, and it took him a while to react.

He knew Gu Yinxue had meddled in this matter, but didn't expect her to intervene so early and so deeply, yet she remained completely invisible during that time.

If it hadn't suddenly become close with Xie Yongsi, even with Jiang Lai's kind words about Xie Yongsi in front of Shen Xun, things might not have unfolded this way; perhaps only much later would Gu Yinxue's behind‑the‑scenes deeds surface.

Gu Yinxue seemed not to take part in any major affair, yet with an occasional small move or a couple of words she could drive the whole development and direction—terrifying indeed.

And this ability rests on reading people's hearts.

If every word Lin Shutong said is true, Gu Yinxue is truly terrifying.

Li Dan felt a chill down his back.

He waved for three bottles of water, handing one to Gu Zhiyan.

Gu Zhiyan poured the whole bottle over his head, the water streaming into his eyes, making them even redder.

Xie Yongsi, almost there, walked toward them with his helmet, opened a bottle and drank with a glug glug, giving them a glance.

Li Dan shook his head, indicating he shouldn't ask anything.

The three of them stood on the viewing platform, feeling the cold wind for a while, until the manager reminded them of the time, then they went to change clothes.

Just as they stepped out, they caught sight of Jiang Lai and Ke Zhongyu.

Ke Zhongyu was opening the passenger door; Jiang Lai stepped down with one foot, and the instant she lifted her gaze, it met Gu Zhiyan's blood‑red eyes.

Ke Zhongyu sensed Jiang Lai's fleeting glance and turned his head to look.

The three stood on the steps, as if frozen.

Ke Zhongyu gave them a light glance, then turned to Jiang Lai and said, "Let's move elsewhere."

Jiang Lai brushed it off, "We're already here, no need to fuss—didn't we say the S‑curve was hard?"

Ke Zhongyu nodded, closed the door, and the two stepped onto the steps.

Gu Zhiyan stood dazed like a block of wood, his gaze involuntarily lingering on Jiang Lai, moving from afar to near.

Xie Yongsi smiled and greeted, "Chief Ke, Jiang Lai."

Li Dan did the same.

Ke Zhongyu calmly glanced at the two as a response, and Jiang Lai gave them a slight nod.

They passed by Gu Zhiyan but gave him no look.

Gu Zhiyan's gaze still rested on Jiang Lai, this time moving from near to far until her silhouette vanished.

Xie Yongsi whispered to Li Dan, "Why do those two feel so alike?"

Li Dan nodded, his complicated gaze landing on Gu Zhiyan, and said, "Let's go."

Gu Zhiyan, however, could not move his feet.

He recalled standing beside Lin Shutong and having attacked Jiang Lai's background, and remembered a few days ago in B City, questioning Jiang Lai about why she wanted to return because of Gu Yinxue.

Gu Zhiyan's trembling lips tried to call Jiang Lai's name, but his throat could not produce a sound.

He alone was the one without face to face.

He truly was the one without face to face!

Gu Zhiyan's hanging hand trembled slightly, the blue veins on the back of his hand resurfacing, fixed on Jiang Lai's direction.

Li Dan was about to speak, but Xie Yongsi reached out to stop him.

Xie Yongsi shook his head softly, "Everyone has to go through it; I have experience."

Li Dan was speechless, "The experience must have come from Shen Xun, right?"

……

Jiang Lai kept feeling Gu Zhiyan's gaze; in that brief eye contact earlier, she didn't see the anger she had seen before—his eyes were rather odd.

But it wasn't her business.

The important thing was to seize the time to practice driving.

After entering the race track, Jiang Lai stopped, and seriously asked Ke Zhongyu again, "Will you take me to practice the S‑curve here?"

Ke Zhongyu slightly lifted his chin, "Hmm."

The race‑track manager came over to ask which car Chief Ke would drive today; hearing the answer "practice," he was taken aback, thinking that Chief Ke could breeze through every corner here with eyes closed and foot off the accelerator for several laps—why practice?

After repeatedly confirming it was the licensing‑exam S‑curve, the manager pursed his lips, smiled, said "You may go ahead," then added, "Chief Ke, our track is designed for speed—sharp turns, small radius, many consecutive hairpins, unlike the licensing S‑curve."

Ke Zhongyu understood.

In truth, he wasn't really taking Jiang Lai for a drive; she had been locked in a lab all day for product testing. After asking Xiao Qian, he learned she ate half a rice ball at noon, and he had only pulled her out of the lab an hour ago.

If he just said it to vent, Jiang Lai would definitely plunge back into the lab.

It's an open‑air track in the suburbs, far from the noisy bustling city center, with no one around; go slower, learn as much as you can.

Ke Zhongyu drove one lap, letting Jiang Lai practice a bit from the passenger seat; on the second lap she tried on her own. The track's crash protection is well built, so no matter how poorly she drives, she won't be harmed.

Jiang Lai just switched to the driver's seat when Ke Zhongying's video call came in.

"Are you practicing driving?"

"Yeah, where are you driving to?"

"I was wondering if you're free; I wanted to see you, but if you're practicing I won't disturb you."

"Once you're done, that's fine; I'll send you an address." Jiang Lai sent the address, then saw Ke Zhongyu's hesitant expression, his hand reaching out as if to stop her.

The next second, Ke Zhongying's unusually calm voice came through the video call, with a forced smile, "Sister Jiang Lai, point the camera at my brother, just rotate your phone, I want to face him, love you."

Jiang Lai didn't understand, but still rotated her phone.

Ke Zhongyu rested an elbow on the open car window, propping his head, lazily lifting a eyelid to look at Ke Zhongying.

Before he could speak, Ke Zhongying's angry voice rang out: "What's wrong with you! It's bad enough you hurt me, but why hurt my best friend! Do you even know how to teach someone to drive? Have you forgotten why I failed the test five times in a row?"

"It's all because of you!" Ke Zhongying shouted, "You used the track's S‑curve to teach me, and I ended up either speeding or crossing the line on the exam! Do you have any humanity? Harming my own sister isn't enough; you even harmed my wife!"

Jiang Lai listened, stunned.

Ke Zhongying was still there, spraying saliva everywhere, but Ke Zhongyu, thinking of the word "wife," merely reached out and ended the video call.

He asked Jiang Lai, "How can you put up with her?"

Jiang Lai thought, "You've got that backwards—you've been siblings for over twenty years, and she's only known Ke Zhongying for less than half a year."

"Chongying is so cute." Jiang Lai chuckled, then suddenly realized, "You didn't bring me here to practice driving, did you?"

Ke Zhongyu showed no sign of embarrassment, gave a slight nod, and said, "First drive a lap normally; later I'll take you for a spin. The custom 570S just arrived."

Jiang Lai found it a bit funny, driving at a steady speed on the racetrack practicing S-turns; she indeed went off the track several times, even hit it, but the barrier here is a TP foam cushion wall, so at her speed hitting it feels like not hitting at all.

After finishing a lap, Ke Zhongyu asked her, "Don't you think the bends on G Province roads are pretty similar to this track?"

Jiang Lai looked around and saw that it really was.

The point was no longer about the similar bends, but Ke Zhongyu knew that compared to going back to B City, Jiang Lai returned to G Province more often.

Jiang Lai gazed deeply at Ke Zhongyu, her fingers on the steering wheel twitching, and asked him, "Ke Zhongyu, can you hug me?"

Ke Zhongyu unfastened his seatbelt, leaned over, and embraced her, saying, "Can I kiss you?"

Jiang Lai froze for a moment, then actively tilted her head up and kissed the corner of his mouth.

Ke Zhongyu's breathing instantly grew heavy.
