Chapter 20: Inadequate for success, excessive for failure

Zhang Jun finally regained consciousness under the emergency treatment of the school doctor.

To be safe, Lin Wei and Luo Zhikai sent Zhang Jun to the nearby Xingcheng People's Hospital for a detailed examination.

After a round of imaging tests, the results were not bad. Aside from a mild concussion requiring a few days of hospitalization for observation, there were no serious issues.

What struck Lin Wei as strange was that when the district police came to the hospital to inquire, Zhang Jun said it was merely a personal grudge and he didn't want to pursue it further.

Of course, Lin Wei didn't press the matter either. When the police questioned her, she merely gave a rough account of what she had seen. As for the shout Zhang Jun made while fleeing, she selectively concealed it.

Lin Wei could tell that the thugs' goal was clear: they were aiming at the people around her. If it wasn't Zhang Jun, who else could it be?

With this question in mind, Lin Wei left the hospital. She called Liu Qingqing to cancel their date, then called Chen Yang and asked him to come to the hospital to pick her up.

Chen Yang left early because he received a call from Zhao Xiaoli, saying that Liu Shijie had returned and wanted to meet him.

When Lin Wei's call came through, Chen Yang was already outside the Sunshine Garden Community. Hearing that Zhang Jun had been beaten and hospitalized, he was in a very good mood.

"This petty scoundrel got what he deserved. You shouldn't have intervened to save him."

Lin Wei replied displeased: "I've known him for years as a friend; I couldn't possibly ignore him. On the other hand, you two seem to be hiding something from me."

Chen Yang retorted impatiently: "It's nothing but the matter of getting our marriage license known to them, after which they turned against us."

Chen Yang said dissatisfied: "I guess you let him know on purpose?"

Lin Wei pressed her lips and smirked for a moment, then said: "What's wrong with letting him give up?"

"Good, very good!" Chen Yang said, laughing and crying at the same time: "I almost got killed by his drugging scheme!"

"Ah……, why didn't you tell me about this?"

"Would you believe me if I said it?"

"Hmm, now I believe you. I even suspect that those people today were actually targeting you."

Chen Yang was somewhat speechless; this Zhang Jun is truly a persistent troublemaker. These days he has tried his best to keep a low profile, yet the other side shows no sign of letting up.

After thinking for a while, Chen Yang called Zhao Xiaoli to reschedule a meeting with Liu Shijie. After hanging up, he drove to Xingcheng People's Hospital to pick up Lin Wei, then went to Jinsha Police Station to find Chen Bing, who works there.

Chen Bing was worrying about having no chance to thank Chen Yang. After learning the situation, he immediately called a friend at the Xingcheng University District Police Station and asked them to look into the case.

About an hour later, they called back to inform that the ringleader, Huang Mao, had been caught. Through interrogation, they learned that Huang Mao and his gang's intended target was not Zhang Jun, but Chen Yang.

Someone offered a hundred thousand to break one of Chen Yang's legs!

What is both laughable and exasperating is that they only provided Lin Wei's photo. Although Huang Mao and his men noticed that Zhang Jun beside Lin Wei did not match the appearance described by the hirer, they still couldn't restrain themselves due to the lure of profit.

As for the person who hired them, Huang Mao also didn't know. He said they contacted him via a public telephone, and the money had been placed in advance at a designated spot.

After learning all the circumstances, Lin Wei basically concluded that the mastermind behind it was Zhang Jun. At Xingcheng University, only he had money and a grudge against Chen Yang.

She guessed that Zhang Jun rushed to the scene in a panic, having previously noticed that Chen Yang wasn't with her, intending to go leak the news.

Regarding Lin Wei's speculation, Chen Bing expressed puzzlement: "If Zhang Jun were the mastermind, he could simply notify the accomplice by phone; why go to the scene himself?"

"I suspect his phone might have died," Lin Wei recalled, saying: "During the incident, his phone never lit up."

"This Zhang Jun is also quite stupid; how could he be so sure that you two would both show up at the school gate at the same time?"

Lin Wei pointed at Chen Yang and said: "Zhang Jun and Chen Yang were roommates for four years; he surely knows Chen Yang's travel habits. If Chen Yang hadn't bought a car, and I hadn't gone to meet Luo Zhikai about things, we really might have been blocked by them."

Compared to the criminal process, Chen Yang cared more about the outcome. He asked Chen Bing: "Based on the evidence we currently have, can we convict Zhang Jun?"

Chen Bing shook his head: "Without direct evidence of Zhang Jun hiring the attackers, everything can only be considered speculation."

Lin Wei also added: "Even if evidence were found, given their family's financial resources, they could find someone to take the blame."

Chen Yang felt a bit regretful. He would rather see Zhang Jun serving time in prison.

Lin Wei took the opportunity to advise Chen Yang: "The public order in Xingcheng is too chaotic; you'd better come back to Clearwater with me!"

"This is just an isolated incident; overall, Xingcheng's public security is still…… not bad." Chen Bing noticed Lin Wei's gaze toward him carried a sharp edge, so he immediately rephrased. He also realized that this girl just wanted to keep Chen Yang by her side.

Chen Yang knew the situations of Xingcheng and Clearwater for the next twenty years like the back of his hand.

"You two good-for-nothings, get out! I never want to see you again."

"Brother Zhang, give me another chance!"
