Chapter 29: Her Heart Softens a Little 29
Fu Qiwei half-kneeled on the ground, pulling her hand, like a devout worshipper gazing up at his deity.
Ruanruan, she's dead.
Yi Ruan heard this, feeling both joy and sorrow.
The joy was that the woman was dead, and Fu Qiwei would always be by her side; the sorrow was that she died when Fu Qiwei loved her most, and as a living person she could never compare to the dead.
Why didn't you tell me? she questioned, her voice icy and her eyes vacant.
You don't need to know. he said lightly and coolly.
Yi Ruan couldn't help raising her hand and slapped him, "Fu Qiwei, you're deceiving me into marriage!"
She trembled with anger.
His head was tilted to one side by her slap.
Why do you treat me like this…… she covered her face, wondering why he hadn't told her from the start, why he only spoke now, why he made her fall for him before revealing that his heart always held a place for another woman.
He held her hand, her hand icy cold, so cold his heart trembled, "Ruanruan, shall we go home?"
The man eavesdropping on the wall next door silently took out his phone to call Ye Su, calmly saying, "Puncture all of Fu Qiwei's car tires."
She didn't know what she was thinking—could this be the system's abandonment of him, but who was actually abandoning whom?
Ruanruan, I love you; I swear, you are more important to me than flowers.
Ruanruan, shall we go home together? he half-kneeled beside her, shaking her arm; she hesitated, then nodded.
Fu Qiwei smiled as he went to get her handbag; she was like a puppet, unsure for a moment whether she should accept this.
The two walked out of the room, and Gu Yunzhen stood at the doorway.
Yi Ruan slightly opened her mouth but said nothing; Fu Qiwei embraced her shoulders and said lightly, "Gu Shaoye, thank you."
Gu Yunzhen leaned lazily against the wall, looking at her, the corner of his mouth curling into a smile, "Aruan, next time you might not be so lucky to run into me."
She lowered her gaze and remained silent.
Fu Qiwei whispered, "There won't be a next time."
Gu Yunzhen smirked, "Maybe in the very next second."
She said nothing, then turned and left.
Around the corner she bumped into a woman, whose papers scattered to the ground.
Tsk, can you watch where you're going? Don't you know organizing papers is a hassle! Ye Su, summoned by Gu Yunzhen in the dead of night for a performance, was utterly impatient.
Fu Qiwei walked over; she was about to bend down to help Ye Su pick up the papers when she saw a photograph.
Ye Su glanced at the woman, snorted, "Isn't this the Young Mistress Fu? It's a shame this photo isn't of you."
Yi Ruan sensed something; as Ye Su was about to leave, she grabbed her wrist, "What documents? Let me see them."
Fu Qiwei said somewhat flusteredly, "Ruanruan, let's go home."
Ye Su deliberately hid the documents behind her back, "I don't want to ruin your marital feelings."
She wouldn't listen, reaching out to snatch them, but the man caught her in his arms, "Ruanruan! Go home."
Ye Su also smiled, "Exactly, Young Mistress Fu, wouldn't it be nice to just be a young mistress, sipping tea and playing mahjong?"
She said nothing; her peach-blossom eyes held less starlight and more softness.
Qiwei, let's go home.
……
……
The matter of the dried flowers had passed a long time ago.
Yet between her and Fu Qiwei there had also arisen an intangible rift, not big nor small, but often making her feel uneasy.
She always felt that the first love affair wasn't that simple, but she had asked Fu Qiwei's close friends and confidants.
Huo Zongting said he didn't know Fu Qiwei's private life.
Wei Nanxing said she had only seen Yi Ruan, a woman, by Fu Qiwei's side.
That day, she sat in the courtyard basking in the sun when Yu Ma came over and handed her a USB drive, saying, "Madam, this belongs to that Young Master Gu; it ended up at our place."
She hummed in acknowledgment and took it.
She then adjusted her knitted coat; such wonderful sunshine on her body felt very comfortable.
Yu Ma turned and walked away, then sighed.
Since the mistress and master argued, even a servant could see the mistress was somewhat gloomy.
She often sat alone in the garden in a daze; occasionally, struck by a sudden urge, she would play a couple of piano pieces, grow tired, and say she wanted to sleep.
Yi Ruan had been drowsy these days; just then, she lay down on the recliner and fell asleep.
At noon Fu Qiwei returned, didn't see her, and asked, "Where is the madam?"
He wore a heavy black overcoat and held a large bouquet of roses in his hands.
Yu Ma's brows lit up with joy, "She's sunbathing in the garden."
Fu Qiwei gave a noncommittal "uh."
Not far off, he saw the little woman lying on the recliner, eyes closed, wearing a cream-colored sweater, a black knit slit skirt, and had thrown on a knitted jacket before falling asleep.
With her eyes shut, her autumn-wave brows were gently curved, looking very tender.
The autumn breeze lifted petals, which fell upon her body and hair.
The man took off his overcoat and draped it over her.
And she, uncomfortable in her sleep, let out a soft "ngng" sound, a sweet, soft voice, quite adorable.
Yu Ma stood at the garden entrance, seeing the master secretly kiss the mistress.
She was startled awake by that kiss, her peach-blossom eyes snapping open without warning to behold that exquisitely handsome, magnified face.
Originally it had been a mere taste and stop, but seeing her awake, the kiss grew ever more fervent.
Yi Ruan shrank back, not knowing what was wrong; she smelled a greasy food odor, felt nauseous, turned to the side, and vomited.
Fu Qiwei's face darkened, thinking she despised him; since their argument, he hadn't touched her—not because he wouldn't, but because she wouldn't let him.
"Cough, cough." Seeing her vomit while lying on her side.
He still felt some pity, his large palm covering her back, gently patting, he frowned slightly and said displeased, "Yu Ma!"
Yu Ma heard this, rushed over, and only then discovered the madam was unwell.
Seeing her pitiable vomiting, after vomiting for a while she only brought up bile; Yu Ma went to pour a cup of warm water.
She lifted her head, her peach-blossom eyes like a clear spring stirring ripples; seeing Fu Qiwei's anguished look, she couldn't help saying, "It's fine, I probably caught a chill from the wind in the garden."
He instinctively nodded; Yu Ma came running with a cup of warm water, "Madam, rinse your mouth."
She took the water, rinsed her mouth, then lay back down, slightly closing her eyes to adjust her breathing.
"Madam, sir, the meal is ready."
"Hmm."
The man supported the little woman.
She had just sat down, looking at the dishes on the table, she couldn't help but frown slightly, covering her nose with her fingers.
Yu Ma was simmering chicken soup, she ladled out some and brought it to Yi Ruan, "Madam, you've been losing weight lately; drink some soup to strengthen yourself."
But unexpectedly she got up, covering her mouth, and headed to the restroom.
Hands on the sink edge, she had a bout of dry heaving.
Fu Qiwei quickly rose to go see her.
How did she get sick?
He supported her shoulder, holding a cup of warm water in his hand.
Seeing this, Yu Ma felt doubtful; the madam's condition... could she be... pregnant?
Unexpectedly, Yi Ruan spoke in a hoarse voice, "I feel unwell, I can't eat."
She took the warm water from the man's hand and was rinsing her mouth.
Hearing Yu Ma's astonished exclamation, "Ah, madam, are you pregnant?!"
