Chapter 30: Her Heart Softens a Little 30

~8 min read 1,408 words

Afternoon

Fu Qiwei didn't go to the company; instead, he sat on the edge of the bed.

He looked at her flat belly and slender waist, wondering if there was really room for a child there.

"Ouch! My sister-in-law called me here, brother, don't walk in front of me!"

Wei Nanxing held a stethoscope, Wei Jiangyu carried a medical kit, "Tsk tsk, my brother sent me here, what do you want!"

"No, I'll look first!"

"I'll look first!"

Wei Jiangyu and Wei Nanxing made a bet on who would first find out whether Yi Ruan was pregnant.

Fu Qiwei, trying cautiously, held a homemade cake, placed it before her, eyed her suspiciously, guessing whether she would vomit.

"...", she, vexed and annoyed, hid under the covers, not wanting to see his damned appearance.

Wei Nanxing rushed in first; she sat up from under the covers.

"Sister-in-law, reach out, reach out, quick quick quick!"

She was extremely excited; first she took her pulse, possibly because Yi Ruan's body was weak, her pulse was unstable, yet she was overjoyed and exclaimed, "It's a happy pulse!"

Wei Jiangyu muttered, "Alright, I lost to her."

Fu Qiwei was thrilled inside, but kept a calm exterior as he seriously watched Wei Nanxing examine her.

Wei Nanxing put the stethoscope into her blanket, "Sister-in-law, place it on the uterus."

She placidly placed the stethoscope far away on her abdomen.

Time passed bit by bit; Wei Nanxing withdrew the stethoscope, smiling at the corners of his mouth, "Sister-in-law, congratulations, when you have a moment go to the hospital for another check-up, remember to keep a good mood," he said while packing up, "Moreover, your fetal position is unstable; you need to rest well, as depression and fatigue could possibly cause a natural miscarriage."

Wei Jiangyu impatiently said, "Tsk, what's the point of saying that? Ruanruan surely knows."

Yi Ruan nodded, "There's a little life in my belly?"

"Quite... impressive, in my previous life, the thing I feared most was pregnancy."

"I never expected it to come so suddenly."

Wei Jiangyu immediately took a photo and posted it to his social circle; as he left, he still said, "Xiacao will be born in a few months, I wonder how big a gift I should prepare."

Evening

Yu Ma made a portion of sour and spicy dishes and brought it up to the mistress.

Knock knock on the door, the master opened it.

She saw the mistress sitting on the bed looking at a jewelry magazine; the room was filled with flowers the master had given her at noon, and the master held a poetry collection in his hand.

Yi Ruan leaned against a pillow, looking at what Yu Ma held, and was stunned for a moment.

Yu Ma knew the mistress was pregnant, overjoyed beyond words, "Mistress, take a look, what would you like to eat?"

She reached out to take it, but suddenly felt a wave of nausea.

"No, no, Yu Ma."

She waved her hands repeatedly; Yu Ma smiled, "Otherwise, mistress, why not give it a try?"

Yi Ruan glanced at Fu Qiwei; he dared not meet her icy gaze, and she still refused to forgive him.

"I'm not hungry right now," she said with a light smile.

He replied lightly, "Yu Ma, why don't you leave it there; Ruanruan can drink it later when she wants."

She nodded, placed it at the head of the bed, "Mistress, you should drink it while it's hot; if it gets cold it will hurt your stomach."

"Mm-hmm, I will definitely drink it."

Having said that, she respectfully withdrew.

Yi Ruan lay in bed continuing to flip through; he walked over, sat down beside her, and watched her serious expression.

He couldn't help but say, "Ruanruan, you really don't want to eat anything?"

She didn't lift her eyes, softly saying, "I can't eat anything right now."

Her mind was in turmoil, not as calm as it appeared on the surface.

Having just become a mother, she felt she was still a child herself—how could she have a child?

"But Ruanruan, you didn't eat at noon, nor at night; your body won't hold up." Fu Qiwei watched her grow ever thinner; having finally managed to put on some flesh, she now lost it again during this period.

Yi Ruan closed the magazine, looked at the room's decor, and said coldly, "This place is too cold and lifeless, devoid of any vitality."

"How about we change places," he said, covering her hand, "you're pregnant, we can't redo the renovation."

He had specifically checked: no intercourse during the three months before and after pregnancy, and renovation is unsuitable during pregnancy; he wanted to give her a tranquil, beautiful world.

She nodded, but remained silent.

"Ruanruan, shall I accompany you to the hospital for a check-up tomorrow?" He took her cold hand.

Gradually, those hands grew warm in his palm.

Perhaps because she was pregnant, Fu Qiwei often stayed home to keep her company.

Wei Nanxing told her, "Your body is weaker than that of an average pregnant woman; during pregnancy you must keep a good mood, otherwise you're prone to a natural miscarriage."

For the sake of the little life in her belly, she gradually let go of her grudge against Fu Qiwei.

During the second month, Master Mo came by once.

He gave her a string of Buddhist beads and an amulet, saying she had undergone nirvana and carried killing energy; fearing she might disturb the baby in her belly, she wore them properly every day.

But her morning sickness grew increasingly severe.

Sometimes she would torment Fu Qiwei seven or eight times in a single night.

Just after bathing

She had barely gotten into bed before she clung to Fu Qiwei asking where the strawberries were placed.

He had no choice but to end the meeting and go wash strawberries for her.

After he finished cutting the strawberry tops and brought them over, she again didn't want to eat.

"Don't, I don't want to eat strawberries now." She lay on the bed, and Fu Qiwei brought the cut strawberry tips to her mouth, but she stubbornly turned her head away.

He burst into a helpless laugh, "But you said you wanted to eat just ten minutes ago."

"I want ice cream." She gazed at him with her peach-blossom eyes, but he refused, "No, it's too cold."

"Then I want to drink milk."

"Okay, I'll go pour you some."

He got up and left the room, just as he went downstairs, he heard Yi Ruan's flustered voice, "I want to eat egg tarts."

She lay in the room watching a soap opera, and the fresh-faced idol in it was quite handsome.

After waiting a while, Fu Qiwei still hadn't returned.

She was just about to get out of bed when Yu Ma walked in holding the egg tarts and milk, smiling at her, "Madam, why are you still acting like a child?"

She lay back down; in fact, her belly was still quite flat, sometimes she even forgot she was pregnant because there was really no sign of it.

She pulled the covers up and asked, "Qiwei, where did he go? What is he doing?"

The room's heating was on, and the blanket she had covered herself with wasn't thick.

Yu Ma paused in her hands, "Sir has an urgent meeting."

"Madam, if you want anything else, just call me; don't go downstairs, what if you fall?"

After saying that, Yu Ma left.

As she stepped down the stairs, Yu Ma saw that woman sitting on the floor crying, her disheveled hair making her look like a vengeful ghost.

"I'm already married and have a child, Yi Tong, don't make a scene." Fu Qiwei half-kneeled before her.

But the woman wouldn't listen, "I don't care, I don't care! Brother Qiwei, you said you loved my older sister, you said you would marry her, you can't marry someone else! Divorce, you must divorce that woman right now!" Yi Tong couldn't have imagined that in just twelve years, twelve years later he would marry someone else.

Fu Qiwei's eyes reddened slightly as he looked at the woman sitting on the floor, his voice almost hoarse, he lowered his voice, "Yi Tong, don't make a scene, I and my wife already have a child, please leave."

"The new year is a new beginning, so be happy, put away your little red envelopes."
