Chapter 57: Scam Call
Hearing this, Yu Youwei giggled incessantly on the other end, while Wu Yue'er let out a "damn it," her little mouth pouting higher than a seesaw.
"Old Shen, what do you mean by that? Is my singing really that hard to listen to?"
Shen Yan coughed twice and said, "Don't you have any self-awareness? Other people want money when they sing; you want lives."
That's a heart-stabber, buddy!
Although quite a few people had complained about her singing voice, Wu Yue'er had always believed that while her singing was far from pleasant, it wasn't exactly life-threatening.
"Youwei, you be the judge. Is my singing really that hard to listen to?"
Yu Youwei hemmed and hawed for a long time before comforting her: "Actually, it's okay. There are many people who are worse than you."
Only then did Wu Yue'er feel consoled, and she lifted her chin toward Shen Yan like a proud little peacock.
After half an hour, guided by the navigation, the car passed through the sea of vehicles and successfully reached the highway entrance; looking ahead, the road was clear.
The school had let out early, allowing the three of them to perfectly avoid the peak highway congestion.
As for those miserable office workers, they would likely be complaining endlessly on the highway tonight, only to be swallowed up by the vast sea of cars.
During this time, Yu Youwei noticed the little pig ornament on the center console; her eyes lit up, and she praised Shen Yan for having good taste, saying the little pig was so cute and even had the words "luck" and "peace" carved on it.
Shen Yan didn't explain, only saying it was indeed quite cute.
The scenery on the highway was picturesque: endless fields, towering green mountains, winding little rivers... everything was like a meticulously woven scroll, making one linger and forget to return.
Under the warm sun, the cozy atmosphere inside the car was pushed to the extreme, making one feel drowsy and yawn repeatedly; before she knew it, Yu Youwei had tilted her head against the seat and fallen asleep.
Wu Yue'er, however, was full of energy; she picked up her phone to film Shen Yan from the back side. Shen Yan observed this through the rearview mirror and asked, "Old Wu, what are you trying to do again?"
"Posting a status update, titled 'What it's like to have a buddy suddenly strike it rich,'" Wu Yue'er said with a grin.
Shen Yan quickly stopped her: "Don't. If you're on the highway with a driver's license less than a year old, you'll be fined anywhere from twenty to two hundred. If some black-hearted person reports it, that would be trouble, and besides, I like to keep a low profile."
Wu Yue'er arched her peach-blossom eyes and said happily, "How did you learn to drive? You're so smooth at it." Shen Yan replied, "Talent."
Just then, a crisp cell phone ringtone sounded.
"Hello! Who is this?" Shen Yan turned on the speakerphone.
A young woman's voice came through the receiver: "Hello, sir. I am a bank employee. May I ask your surname?"
Shen Yan raised an eyebrow. A strange number, and so unprofessional—it was likely a scam call.
"My surname is Shen."
The woman: "Hello, Mr. Shen. I am a bank employee. May I ask if you have been to Yunnan recently?"
Shen Yan immediately confirmed his suspicion. He had always found such scam calls annoying, so he decided to toy with her and replied, "I have. Why?"
The woman: "It's like this. Our system shows that your credit card was used for nearly 60,000 in Yunnan. Was this a transaction made by you personally?"
Shen Yan asked in surprise, "That's not right. I clearly spent over six million."
In the back seat, Wu Yue'er put down her phone, her head full of question marks. From the moment Shen Yan said he had been to Yunnan, she had found it strange, and now he was saying he had spent over six million—who was he trying to fool?
The woman's breathing became noticeably faster. After pondering for a good while, she said, "I just verified it, and it was indeed over six million. May I ask what exactly you spent this six million on?"
Shen Yan's mind raced: "I bought pandas and potatoes."
Wu Yue'er's eyes nearly popped out. What on earth was this? In an instant, she realized this was a scam call, and Shen Yan was pulling the scammer's leg.
This Shen Yan was too damn funny. Instead of hanging up on a scam call, he did the opposite, dragging the scammer around like a dog.
Tee-hee-hee!
Beautiful faces are all the same, but interesting souls are one in a million. She loved how Shen Yan was acting right now.
The woman was somewhat confused at this point and asked, "What the hell? Say that again. You bought pandas?"
Shen Yan said, "That's right, pandas."
The woman: "Sir, what kind of pandas are you talking about? Are they..."
Before she could finish, Shen Yan added, "The kind you're thinking of, the pandas with two big black circles around their eyes."
Wu Yue'er felt she couldn't hold it in anymore; she pinched her thigh in amusement but didn't dare make a sound, fearing the person on the other end would notice something.
It would be such a pity if such great entertainment were interrupted.
The woman clearly hadn't realized there was a problem yet and said, "No, sir, can you just buy and sell pandas like that?"
Shen Yan steered the wheel and said without changing his expression, "Sure you can. I bought them at the big market. People around here can all go buy them."
The woman was stunned, completely thrown off. After a long while, she said, "Oh... poverty has limited my imagination. So, what did you buy the pandas for?"
Shen Yan blurted out, "I stewed them!"
Wu Yue'er was already laughing like crazy, covering her mouth and lying prone on the back seat, her body trembling; her long eyelashes fluttered lightly like butterfly wings.
Oh my god! Shen Yan was too damn impressive, actually saying something like stewing pandas so calmly.
The woman was completely dumbfounded and said in an incredulous tone, "What the hell? You stewed them?"
Shen Yan: "Yeah, that's how we eat them around here. Add some scallions, ginger, garlic, and potatoes. Oh my god! It's so fragrant, let me tell you."
"Pfft!" This time, Wu Yue'er finally couldn't hold back her laughter; she slapped her thigh wildly, laughing until she was out of breath.
"Hahaha! Old Shen, I don't admire anyone, but I admire you."
The huge commotion woke up Yu Youwei. A ray of sunlight snuck in from outside the window, mischievously prying open her hazy, sleepy eyes.
What's going on?
The mocking laughter coming from beside her ear was so clear; the woman on the other end now knew she had been played. She spewed a string of insults, spitting out foul language.
Shen Yan replied, "First time I've met such a stupid scammer," and then hung up the phone.
The damage wasn't great, but the insult was extreme. In a dilapidated little courtyard far away in Guangdong Province, a series of crashing sounds erupted, mixed with earth-shattering roars, leaving the neighbors looking at each other in dismay.
Did that silly girl get scammed by someone again?
