Chapter 63: Scavenger
In fact, after Sang Yan helped Qiao Suisui save Gaimailun, the three of them continued to go out to explore.
This mission was to find seeds on a Huangxing called "Lang'aina" and bring them back to the Freedom Alliance. After the three-person team arrived at the Huangxing, they began to work separately; they collected quite a few varieties of seeds, intending to take them back for research.
There is no oxygen on Lang'aina, and with many Alien Beasts present, they had to make it a quick battle.
Gaimailun discovered a male Beastman lying on the ground, with red hair, a brow piercing, and over a dozen bite wounds all over his body; one look and it was clear he had been through a fierce struggle. Most importantly, this Beastman was not wearing a Protective Suit, which was practically an act of waiting for death.
When Sang Yan and A Yao came to find Gaimailun to regroup, they saw him giving his own oxygen tube to the unconscious Beastman to breathe.
"There are no traces of warships nearby; how did he appear here?" A Yao scratched his head.
Gaimailun gestured fussily, his tone exaggerated: "Exactly! It's like magic. I am certain, positive, and sure that he wasn't here just a moment ago. Then I turned around to look, and wow, a person just appeared out of thin air!"
Sang Yan squatted down to check the Beastman's condition and took out the medical kit Qiao Suisui had given them to apply a simple bandage. Calmly and unhurriedly, he said: "There is only one possibility for appearing out of thin air; he must have come from another space."
Gaimailun widened his eyes and said: "Ah! That very rare and amazing talent called... called..."
A Yao chimed in naively: "Breach."
"That's right, that's right! I really wish I had such a cool talent too. Just imagine, I'm lying on my bed in the bedroom, and the next second I could appear in the bathroom—wouldn't that be very labor-saving?"
A Yao said with disdain: "Is that the only way you can think of using it?"
Sang Yan ignored their chatter, nimbly finished treating his wounds, and took the oxygen mask off his face to return it to Gaimailun.
"Hold onto this, don't waste the oxygen. Now is not the time for overflowing sympathy."
Gaimailun nodded; in the three-person team, Sang Yan's word was always final, but he was a bit worried. "We're leaving, what about this Beastman?"
Sang Yan left him water and Nutrient Solution, took out a spare Protective Suit to put on him, and then stood up to leave.
"Everything that needs to be done has been done, let's go."
After the three left, Ka'er's hand moved ever so slightly, as if struggling to wake up.
The Federation's mission for him this time was to track down the whereabouts of the Rebel Army, but because the mission's security clearance was extremely high, he could only first arrive at the border of Ausilan according to instructions and wait for further orders. This was also the reason why he had stayed at Qiao Suisui's Xiaolou.
For many years, the Federation had actually been closely monitoring the remaining 13 members of the Rebel Army and had even established a secret organization department. This department had no name, and colleagues never addressed each other by name; they shared a common codename—Scavenger.
Ka'er had originally only wanted to become a member of the Federation by relying on his Excellent abilities, but because of the special nature of his talent, he was ultimately selected to become a member of the "Scavenger."
Among the remaining Rebel Army, 5 people had already been secretly eliminated one after another over the past ten-plus years. For the remaining 8, the Federation had invested a massive amount of manpower, material resources, and financial resources to hunt them down for several years, and they still hadn't given up to this day.
Ka'er's mission this time was: find the son of the Rebel Army leader, follow the vine to unearth the whereabouts of the Rebel Army, and then send a signal using a specific contact method; specialists would then come to carry out the elimination. The mission even included a supplementary note requiring that in extreme circumstances, there was no need to bring back a complete corpse. That meant they could use any means necessary, only needing to achieve one goal: kill the Rebel Army.
Ka'er felt internally that such an arrangement was simply redundant; he could find the Rebel Army's location and kill them directly by himself, so why go through the extra trouble of adding a middleman and separating the functions of tracking and elimination? But he didn't ask, because there were only two rules for a Scavenger.
One, always obey, never ask questions.
Two, follow the first rule.
When Ka'er received the signal, it happened that Qiao Suisui and Luka had gone out. He quickly put on his special gear—a tight-fitting black uniform that displayed his pectoral muscles and the lines of his entire body without reservation. He put on his headset, chewed gum, took the gun out of his sports bag and assembled it, raised the gun, squinted one eye, and calibrated the scope with the other.
The red light on his headset lit up, and a processed mechanical voice came through clearly: "Coordinate N673, target appeared."
"Received."
He chewed the gum twice, and the next second, both man and gun "whooshed" and vanished from the room.
Ka'er lay on the cliff, observing a group of people slowly passing by below the mountain through the scope.
The team had about a dozen people. Those walking at the very front to clear the path were all professionally armed Beastmen. They wore identical clothes, identical equipment, and had identical greasepaint on their faces. This group of people looked like well-trained mercenaries; they marched in silence, and although they all looked exhausted, they still maintained their vigilance.
Ka'er scanned the area with the scope and pressed his headset to say: "Cannot identify which one is the target."
They're all fucking identical, might as well kill them all. Ka'er grumbled to himself.
The headset quickly replied: "Follow quietly without exposing yourself, continue observing."
Ka'er spat out the gum and put away his gun. For the next few days, he followed this team at a distance.
In front of the campfire, a middle-aged man handed a water canteen to the youth sitting to the side.
The youth took it without a word, drank two sips, and then restrainedly put the cap back on. The uniform black cloak looked somewhat oversized on him, and the hood of the cloak covered most of his face, making it impossible to see his expression.
The middle-aged man to the side said in a low voice: "Please drink a little more, there is still a long way to go."
The youth poked at the fire, and the flames suddenly flared up, shining on his contoured face. The camouflage on his face could not hide those Excellent features—the high-bridged nose, the deep eye sockets; he clearly had a pair of amorous peach-blossom eyes, yet the content within them was heavy, making one shudder.
Seeing the youth refused to drink, the man sighed silently, crossed his arms, and rested.
The canyon at night is the most dangerous.
This team could have people take turns standing guard at night, but Ka'er was alone. He had been awake for days without sleep; the gum was all chewed up, and at this moment, he had a blade of grass in his mouth, crawling on the ground hidden in the bushes, staring at the scope without moving.
Suddenly, a group of Alien Beasts attacked the team. All around were pairs of greenish eyes; the Alien Beasts had surrounded them without them realizing it. Alien Beasts cannot be killed, only suppressed by mental power, but they had been given a death order when they set out: never expose their mental power under any circumstances. Seeing people in the team being bitten to death one after another, the youth suddenly threw off his cloak to rush forward, but was pressed down hard by the middle-aged man.
"No! You will be exposed!"
