Chapter 98: Unstable Pregnancy
Ximeng opened his mouth to say something, but it was too late.
Ka'er fired shots at his shoulder and ankle, precisely avoiding vital areas, causing him to lose his ability to act.
"Put away your crappy talent."
Seeing Ximeng hurriedly withdraw his illusion, he strode toward the bookshelf on the left and stood beneath Qiao Suisui, spreading his arms.
"Come down, I'll catch you."
Qiao Suisui turned her head, hesitating.
This height... could Ka'er really catch her?
Ka'er saw her fear and didn't urge her, softening his voice: "Don't be afraid, trust me."
Qiao Suisui looked at him and saw that the face, usually so cynical, was now looking at her with a serious expression.
"I'm ready to let go..."
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and stopped caring, falling backward directly.
The pain she imagined didn't come; she felt herself fall into a solid embrace.
She opened her eyes, meeting that three-dimensional face, and saw Ka'er looking at her with eyes full of smiles.
"Good girl, you're amazing." Ka'er praised her as if praising a puppy, his tone exaggerated. He bounced the person in his arms and laughed: "I have to tie a weight to you when we go out, otherwise you'll float away."
This bounce caused the cramping pain she had forgotten due to her fear of heights to return from her abdomen.
Ka'er saw Qiao Suisui's small face turn pale from the pain, and his expression changed abruptly.
"Are you hurt? Let me see."
He placed her gently on the table and went to undo her school uniform buttons, but was stopped by Qiao Suisui raising her hand.
"Let me see, this isn't a joke, you..."
"I'm not hurt." Qiao Suisui's voice was very weak; she interrupted him while enduring the pain, "It's my stomach that hurts."
She spoke cryptically, but Ka'er understood immediately, and the expression on his face became even more tense. He carefully passed his arms through the back of her knees, picked Qiao Suisui up horizontally, and kept saying: "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, nothing will happen," though it seemed like comfort for himself.
Qiao Suisui hugged his neck, her head leaning weakly on his shoulder, watching him use a breaking device to open a space and walking quickly toward it.
When the two left, Qiao Suisui turned her head slightly and saw Ximeng on the ground looking at them in surprise.
Qiao Suisui's gaze was as deep as ink, making it impossible to see her thoughts. She withdrew her gaze and leaned back on Ka'er's shoulder.
It took almost only 9 seconds for them to arrive at a private clinic. In an operating room, rock music was blaring, and a doctor in surgical scrubs removed tweezers from a patient's chest cavity; the tip of the tweezers held a bullet.
"Clang—"
The sound of the bullet rolling into the tray rang out. He took off his blood-stained gloves, threw them away, turned off the music, and instructed his assistant: "That's it, suture."
The doctor walked out with his hands raised, and an assistant immediately stepped forward to remove his surgical gown. He first saw Ka'er standing outside the operating room, then looked at Qiao Suisui in Ka'er's arms, and finally shifted his gaze between the two, saying: "Brothers are brothers, but don't break my rules; I don't take females here."
Ka'er said in a deep voice: "It was an emergency, it won't happen again. Kai, help her take a look, just... hurry up." He kept urging the other person to walk toward an empty consultation room, then carried Qiao Suisui inside and placed her gently on the bed.
Kai stood to the side with his arms crossed, revealing a motherly smile, looking as if he had just witnessed a ship sailing.
The entire examination process wasn't complicated. He scanned her from head to toe with precision instruments Qiao Suisui had never seen before, and finally, the hand holding the instrument paused on her flat lower abdomen.
"Yours?" Kai looked at Ka'er in disbelief, and then, upon seeing the thermal imaging of the snake cubs on the electronic screen, his look toward Ka'er became sympathetic, as if he could see the green light on top of his head.
He thought to himself, no wonder he hadn't seen him lately; it turned out he had gone to be a cheap father.
Ka'er didn't care what he thought, only kept urging: "How is it exactly?"
"The pregnancy is unstable; you'll definitely need to rest from now on. Don't overexert yourself, and most importantly, be careful not to have major emotional fluctuations; it's bad for the fetus." After Kai finished explaining, he looked at Qiao Suisui and muttered to himself suspiciously: "It's already the second trimester, why hasn't it shown yet?"
Ka'er wasn't in the mood to explain to him, only asking nervously: "Then why is she still in so much pain? Is there any way?"
Kai shook his head, "In this situation, I can't prescribe painkillers; it's not good for the child. Resting for a night should alleviate it quite a bit."
"Are you any good? How come you have no way at all? Transfer this crappy place, stop running it!"
"What are you in such a rush for? It's not your cub. What exactly are you two..."
The two were good friends of many years and were used to bickering like this, and usually, they were even less serious, but today was different. Ka'er's back was already soaked with sweat; he looked at Qiao Suisui's weak appearance and wished he could immediately find a way to stop her pain.
Actually, Kai really wanted to ask what their relationship was, but felt it was redundant to ask.
Ka'er's heartache for this little female was practically overflowing. For so many years, he had advised Ka'er to start a family more than once, but he had always been rebuffed with a "Mind your own business." He and Ka'er grew up in the Youngling Institute, which was an incubation base funded by the Federation, selecting gene matches from the gene bank for incubation. It could be said that the beastmen in the Youngling Institute were created entirely for the purpose of being built. When these younglings grew up, they were undoubtedly to serve the Federation.
So they had no parents from birth; only by being loyal to the Federation could they live like a person. And among them, the most capable was Ka'er. Unlike himself, Ka'er never longed for the warmth of a home. He only wanted to make himself stronger and didn't want to match with a female; he thought females were just there to hold him back.
For so many years, this was the first time Kai had seen Ka'er so nervous about someone. Therefore, his words weren't as unbridled, and he comforted: "Don't worry too much; this young lady has a special constitution, and she'll be fine after resting for a few days."
Ka'er was still dissatisfied, cursing him as a quack doctor in his heart. He raised his hand to wipe the cold sweat from Qiao Suisui's forehead.
Qiao Suisui nodded politely to Kai to express her gratitude, thought for a moment, and still asked: "How did you know I was a female?"
Her Beauty Pill and Voice-Changing Pill had not failed, so why did this doctor determine she was a female at first glance?
Kai laughed, saying: "Your disguise is very realistic, but you overlooked one point." He touched his chin and said: "Male beastmen, regardless of their form, will gradually start growing a beard after passing their childhood. You are too clean."
Qiao Suisui realized, "Thanks for the reminder."
Kai didn't say that the most important reason he judged her to be a female was—
That guy who had never been interested in anyone else had his eyes glued to her the whole time.
Kai left tactfully, leaving the two to talk alone.
Ka'er sat on a chair, guarding Qiao Suisui's bedside, and poured her a glass of warm water.
"Let's observe for the night here today."
Qiao Suisui agreed; she really didn't have the strength to toss and turn anymore. When the water glass was handed over, she heard Ka'er ask with some hesitation: "Should we notify Zongfang?"
