In the settings of the Sacred Timeline, Loki should have been strangled to death by Thanos during 【Avengers: Infinity War】.

But in 【Avengers: Endgame】, the Avengers traveled through time via the Quantum Realm back to the 【Battle of New York】 to borrow the Infinity Stones, and Loki had accidentally obtained the Space Stone and then ran away.

This escape changed his fate of being escorted back to Asgard by Thor, thereby changing a series of subsequent events.

The Time Variance Authority defined Loki as a time criminal, captured him, and pruned the branched timeline created after his escape.

They reset the timeline, letting the Loki of the past timeline continue to develop along the originally established path.
