Chapter 9: Can You Treat Illness?

~4 min read 652 words

Seeing that it was the wild girl Axi, she was a bit wary; this girl didn't like her, so she had to be careful.

"Don't come over, or if I hurt you, don't blame me."

She has pepper water in her bag; if Axi wants to hurt her, she won't hold back.

Axi saw that she was still rather fierce, and then smiled, "Ying's female, I didn't expect you to be so petite yet so fierce. Don't be angry; I won't speak ill of you any more. What's your name, which tribe are you from, and can you treat illnesses?"

Axi asked a lot, and when Axi's tone softened, she finally gave her a careful look. The girl had disheveled hair and was very thin, yet even so she looked sturdier than her. Wild people are born with robust bone development, to better adapt to harsh natural environments; the survival of the fittest never spares anyone.

"I am Nan Qinghuan. Are you Axi?"

Axi's eyes darted, "Qinghuan? That name sounds terrible. Which tribe are you from?"

Nan Qinghuan was speechless; being told her name sounded terrible, was she being artsy? Nan Qinghuan didn't bother to reply, but in order to escape she had to strike up conversation, "You just asked if I can treat illnesses, are you sick?"

Hearing that she could treat illnesses, Axi's eyes flashed, "You really can! Then are you even better than Sister A Yue's medical skill?"

"A Yue, who?"

"Who is that? She is the only witch in our tribe, both a witch and a Shaman Healer. Your illness was so severe that you were cured just by drinking some herbs, while Sister A Yue has to use herb ash mixed with other things."

Seeing Axi say so much, she understood, "Little girl, you want me to treat you?"

Although she is a biologist, her family runs a Chinese medicine clinic, and she grew up in a pharmacy, so by osmosis she can treat some ailments.

Then Axi suddenly bowed respectfully to her, their kneeling style was very unique, with the whole body touching the ground, "Qinghuan, can you save A Tu? If you save him, A Tu's mother will surely thank you."

"A Tu, who is he? Why should I save him?"

"You are Ying's female; you should help us. A Tu lives with us in a cave; he's a cute kid."

Seeing Axi ask for her help, she had wanted to refuse, but then thought this might be a good chance to get out. She quickly asked, "Axi, where did Ying go?"

"Ying is hosting a mating fire ceremony tonight; he won't return until Tian Mo, so Qinghuan, please help A Tu."

Axi was still quite warm‑hearted; she asked her to help a tribe member. She thought for a moment, got up, and said, "I can help you save the person, but you must also do something for me."

Axi moved her fist, blinking her big eyes, "What is it you want?"

Night fell low, and a bright moon hung high in the clouds.

Inside a cave, the bonfire blazed. Most tribe members had gone to a mating ceremony today, leaving only a few people; a wild child lay on a stone bed, looking on the brink of death.

A woman cradling the child kept crying; she then realized the child's father had been devoured by a beast, leaving only mother and child to rely on each other. Moreover, many single men also lived in the cave, meaning they had that kind of relationship with the woman.

She felt the woman was pitiful; with her husband dead, the orphaned mother was being bullied, so she hurried to treat the child. After taking the pulse, she finally relaxed, "Don't worry, the child has dysentery from a bad stomach. From now on, don't feed the child raw meat; his digestive system is too weak to tolerate it."
