Chapter 61: Great Enemy

~7 min read 1,279 words

Hum~

In an instant, Lin Xian’s vision suddenly blurred.

Clang. Clang.

When he opened his eyes again, the first thing he heard was Chen Laoshi’s frantic shouting.

“Lin Xian! Lin Xian!”

As his vision cleared, the sound of the train racing along the tracks registered—he jolted upright from the floor.

Chen Sixuan, seeing Lin Xian suddenly collapse, turned pale with fear.

“What happened?!”

Lin Xian rubbed his temples, then looked at Chen Sixuan. “How long was I unconscious?”

Chen Sixuan gave him a strange look. “Just… just a moment. You collapsed right then.”

Lin Xian immediately checked Kiki on the ground—her eyes had already been swallowed halfway by the black ink. A dread settled in his chest.

Thud!

Before one crisis could settle, another erupted—a violent impact suddenly rang out from the roof of the distant carriage.

Lin Xian’s face darkened. He turned to Chen Sixuan.

“Watch her for me!”

As he spoke, he sprinted straight toward the rear carriage.

Hum!

He shifted his focus, pulling up the GK03 electric knife blueprint Kiki had given him. With a flick of his hand, a pile of Tungsten-Titanium Alloy Type I rapidly assembled and forged in midair. In the blink of an eye, a sleek black longblade took shape. Lacking several key materials, he’d only forged a crude prototype. Simultaneously, he grabbed a fully loaded assault rifle and sprinted toward the rear.

The hilt of the blade still radiated residual heat. As he gripped it, his heart lurched—Kiki’s fate was unknown, Tang Hai and the horde of corpses still loomed. He had to deal with the immediate threat first.

He looked up and shouted toward the rear carriage and Shasha.

“Da Lou, Shasha—grab your weapons. That old bastard won’t let go. Let’s kill him!”

“Lin Gege, be careful!”

At that moment, Lou Shasha in Carriage 5 screamed in terror, pointing out the window.

Boom!

No sooner had she spoken than a massive gray-white skeletal claw slammed into the side of the carriage, shattering the window instantly. The force hurled Shasha backward.

Da Lou reacted instantly, lunging forward and catching his sister with one hand.

Lin Xian was flung across the carriage, crashing into a supply cabinet. As he scrambled up, he saw a towering white humanoid shadow looming at the rear—his pupils contracted, his face paled.

He gritted his teeth. Bad luck never comes alone—wasn’t this the white monstrosity he’d seen in Jiang City?!

How did it follow them here?

Impossible. They’d traveled over a thousand kilometers. How could something like this track them across such distance?!

“Da Lou, watch out—there’s another one!”

He warned Da Lou about Tang Hai.

Corpses, broken rails, the white monstrosity—Lin Xian’s dread grew with every thought. Was this coincidence… or a long-planned trap?

If not coincidence, it was terrifying. That old beast had to die now.

No escape. Only fight. Without hesitation, Lin Xian flipped open the rear carriage door.

Da Lou set Shasha down, grabbed a machine gun, and braced himself.

Wooo~

The moment the door lowered, the white monstrosity hanging atop the carriage frame inverted its head, fixing its deep, terrifying eyes on the interior. A dark red, gaping maw slowly opened.

“Ughhh~!!”

The white monstrosity let out a piercing, shrill scream like a woman’s—painfully piercing the eardrums.

In that instant, Lin Xian and Da Lou opened fire with full force!

Taptaptaptaptap!

Taptaptaptaptap…

A torrent of firepower rained down. The high-velocity steel rounds struck the monstrosity’s face like they were hitting steel—sparks flew, but no damage showed.

Only the shots fired into its mouth sprayed blood.

Enraged, the white monstrosity lashed out with a long, bony arm, clawing wildly into the carriage—Clatter! Crash!

All tools inside were tossed into chaos.

“Ahh!”

Da Lou roared, bracing both arms, and drove a steel beam straight down into the white claw. The force warped the beam entirely.

With a heavy thud, like a steel pillar driven into concrete, the monstrosity’s dorsal hand was pierced clean through—along with the carriage floor. The strength was staggering!

Lin Xian watched, his back teeth itching. Da Lou’s strength was insane—if he evolved further, what would he become?

But now, seeing Da Lou’s strike, Lin Xian felt hope—no longer that helpless feeling from the red worm’s earlier attack.

Just as he prepared to act, a rapid scrambling sound came from behind. He spun around—Tang Hai had appeared out of nowhere, scaling the carriage side and sprinting onto the roof, heading toward the front.

No!

Lin Xian’s face darkened. The monstrosity’s hand was impaled, and it was pulling the steel beam back.

“Cover me!” Lin Xian shouted, then sprinted toward the rear.

Da Lou instantly understood. He raised his gun and unleashed a barrage at the monstrosity’s head as it leaned down.

Lin Xian moved with agility, leaping over the monstrosity’s arm and onto the open rear carriage. Before he could turn, a sharp whistling sound came.

!

Without thinking, he reversed his hand—ice shield formed. Then he leapt backward toward the jeep.

Boom!

The monstrosity’s arm smashed into the ice shield and the jeep’s front end, shattering both. The chain snapped. The jeep hung half-off the carriage edge, then collided with a roadside power tower and exploded, tumbling to the ground.

“Damn it!”

Lin Xian stood on the empty flatbed, cursing inwardly. Those two jeeps—hard-won, gone without even a chance to absorb them.

“Da Lou, hold it off—I’m going after Tang Hai!”

Lin Xian shouted into the wind. The white monstrosity dangled over Carriage 5; Tang Hai had already charged toward the front.

“Got it!”

Da Lou didn’t hesitate. He charged out, rolled aside, and dodged the monstrosity’s heavy claw overhead.

Taptaptap!

He reloaded and unleashed a furious barrage at the monstrosity’s eyes and mouth. Seizing the moment, Lin Xian sprinted forward and activated his new skill!

“Backflash!”

It was the new skill he’d gained from absorbing the “Taitiewei 3” military assault armor—never tested before, yet now used in this dire moment.

Zing!

In an instant, Lin Xian became a gray-white afterimage, wielding the Tungsten-Titanium Alloy Type I GK03 electric knife, charging with full force!

A sharp “crack” echoed—like a sonic boom.

The monstrosity’s massive claw lunged forward—but only grasped an afterimage. The next instant—pfft! A vertical hole tore open in its palm. Flesh and blood exploded outward!

Lin Xian had already reappeared behind the monstrosity.

Hidden in the air, severed by the blade!

Lin Xian was stunned—this was his first use. Though it drained considerable essence, the damage was far more terrifying than he’d imagined.

Back in Jiang City, his short blade hadn’t even broken its skin. Now he had a new skill, a new weapon, and a massive boost in strength—he could finally pierce its defenses. His confidence surged.

Below, Da Lou stared in awe at Lin Xian’s explosive, bullet-like movement.

Before he could react, the monstrosity roared wildly, tore the steel beam from its hand, turned, and charged toward Lin Xian.

Its massive body pressed against the carriage, producing a hollow, heavy thud. Carriage 5’s wheels slammed violently against the rails, sparks flying everywhere!

“Brother!”

Shasha, now free from the empty carriage, dashed out and hurled a steel pipe to Da Lou.

They moved in perfect sync. Da Lou caught it, muscles tensed, veins bulging, and hurled it with all his strength at the turning monstrosity.

Wooo! A violent wind shrieked.

The monstrosity sensed danger—it clearly possessed intelligence. It knew both Lin Xian and Da Lou could harm it. Sensing Da Lou’s move, it instantly abandoned pursuit of Lin Xian, whirled around, and clenched its long, bony claw—Boom!

It caught the searing steel pipe—sparks erupted everywhere!!
