Chapter 62: Battle on the Roof
On the other side, Lin Xian sprinted rapidly toward the front carriage, braving the gale on the roof; he knew Tang Hai had once been station chief of Beiwan, was deeply familiar with trains, and was surely behind the sabotage of the tracks—this was his doing!
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Lin Xian ran across the roof, and just as he prepared to leap from Car 3 to Car 2, a white shadow suddenly flashed out from the coupling—he instantly bristled, without hesitation forming an ice shield before him.
Puff!
A thin hole pierced through—the ice shield. Lin Xian whirled around and saw a slender claw slash across his chest, sending shards flying.
Close call!
“Die!!!”
Tang Hai shrieked, his voice now half-human, half-ghoul; with a sweep of his seemingly frail arm, immense force cleaved through the ice shield like a hot knife through butter, hurtling straight for Lin Xian’s throat.
“Old bastard, still not dead? I’ll help you finish it!”
Lin Xian roared in fury. The thought of this man using corpses to dig tunnels to bury everyone on the train, and Kiki’s current whereabouts unknown state, ignited his rage—he threw his body back to evade the claw, then swung his blade in one precise arc, striking Tang Hai’s neck!
Ding!
But Tang Hai’s evolved skin was harder than the white giant’s—his GK03 tungsten-titanium alloy blade struck with a metallic clang, sparks flying, the impact sending Tang Hai staggering backward.
Yet he paid no mind to the blade at his throat, grinning savagely as both claws, covered in black nails, lashed wildly at Lin Xian, striking as he spoke:
“Hahaha… I should thank you! You’ve made me so…!”
Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
Lin Xian didn’t waste words—he stepped back, raised his automatic rifle, and unleashed a full burst at the monster!
Tang Hai hadn’t even finished his opening line when several rounds slammed into him; the kinetic force hurled him rolling across the roof, blood spurting from multiple puncture wounds.
“Damn it!”
He moved with blinding speed, shrugged off the bullets, and scrambled sideways along the train’s flank, vanishing into the night like a ghost.
Lin Xian’s mind reeled—normally, even enhanced-body cultivators like Da Lou would be pierced by bullets; how was this guy so resilient?
Had he truly evolved?
“Fuck, half-man, half-ghoul—this thing’s definitely a failed evolution.”
Hiss!
Suddenly, a dark shadow appeared beside Lin Xian—Tang Hai burst out, thrusting one hand forward; his five fingers grotesquely elongated like whips. Lin Xian’s eyes snapped wide—he crossed his blade before him. Ding! The force of the strike sent him reeling, numbing his grip.
Missing his target, Tang Hai vanished back into the shadows.
What kind of monster? Can his fingers stretch?
Lin Xian stood atop the train, where the “Infinity” still raced forward, powered by the Huanxing 7F electric locomotive; the rooftop wind was biting cold, and he kept his rifle raised, scanning all around.
Huh… huh…
He forced his breathing to steady, cursing inwardly.
Whether this was a failed evolution or not, according to Kiki, this thing had only just broken into the Evolution Rank—and already it was this strong. What if it reached Level Three? Level Four? Would it fly through the sky and tunnel through the earth?
Just now, Tang Hai had been nearly half-human, half-corpse—his body covered in gray-white hardened skin, a few strands of degenerated hair clinging to his scalp; he looked like Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, utterly bizarre.
Whoosh!
Another piercing whistle cut the air—this time Lin Xian was ready. He sidestepped sharply, aiming his rifle directly at the source and emptying the magazine.
Taptaptap! Taptaptap!
But Tang Hai was cunning—he knew Lin Xian’s ammo was low, so he only probed with his elongated fingers, then vanished again into shadow.

As expected, the automatic rifle, with only thirty rounds, ran dry. Lin Xian frowned—then suddenly, a whistle came from behind.
“Out of bullets, huh?” A cold voice echoed.
Ding!
Lin Xian reacted instantly, swinging his blade backward—he struck Tang Hai’s finger, producing a sharp clang.
The force sent Lin Xian stumbling, barely keeping his balance.
Tang Hai stepped calmly from the shadows, his voice dripping with malice:
“Ji ji ji… Impressive, isn’t it? You should be grateful—I hadn’t evolved that night, so you lived one more day. Now, it’s your turn to thank me.”
“Thank your mom!”
Puff! Puff! Puff!
Lin Xian didn’t waste words—he charged forward, slashing his blade and firing several wind spears.
Hm?
Tang Hai sensed the hidden threat in the air, tilted his head to dodge one wind spear—but two struck his chest, sending him reeling backward.
“Bastard!!!”
Tang Hai screamed in his androgynous, hoarse voice, suddenly remembering Lin Xian’s ranged killing technique. His ten fingernails shot out like pincers, gripping the roof; his legs coiled—and he exploded forward, leaving two dented footprints in the steel!
Ice Shield!
Seeing the ferocity of the attack, Lin Xian instantly formed an ice shield. “Useless! What good is this?!”
Boom!
Tang Hai roared, transforming into a white, oval-shaped projectile that pierced straight through Lin Xian’s ice shield—giving him no chance to escape.
But behind the shield, Lin Xian vanished like a ghost—his blade hidden, then gone in an instant amid the swirling ice shards.
Then—
Swish!
A thunderous sonic boom erupted as Lin Xian and Tang Hai crossed midair—Zing!
Backslash!
“What?!”
Tang Hai shrieked, his momentum carrying him forward as he clawed at the roof, leaving deep metal scratches—his expression shattered, for he felt… half his face and one ear were gone.
“Aaaah!!!”
Tang Hai touched his bloody side, crimson gushing down—his eyes turned red, descending into madness.
“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!”
!
Puff! Puff! Puff!
Clearly, Lin Xian hated turn-based combat and idle talk—he gave Tang Hai no breathing room. After the backslash, before even landing, he fired more wind spears.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Tang Hai had nowhere to dodge—three spears pierced his chest, launching him backward off the roof into the rubble beside the tracks.
“Aaaah!!!”
Enraged, Tang Hai had lost all reason. Covered in blood and filth, he felt no pain—like a wild beast, he crawled and charged toward the moving train.
Boom!
On the other side, the white giant leapt from the roof of Car 5 onto the flatcar where Da Lou stood—its massive body crushed the sleepers beneath the rails, nearly derailing the following cars.
Da Lou stepped back, grabbed the broken leg chain from the train, and swung it hard.
The heavy iron chain whistled through the air with a dull “Oooh,” then cracked against the giant’s skull.
Crack!
The force was immense—it snapped the giant’s head sideways, leaving a horrific gash on its hardened skin.
“Urrrrgh!!!!!!”
The white giant roared, enraged. Leveraging its size and long limbs, it raised its arm to swipe Da Lou off the train.
But before it could strike, a violent explosion erupted from its back!
Boom!
It was Lou Shasha, holding the M36 grenade launcher—the little girl, fearless despite her size, had nailed the shot perfectly; clearly, her escape journey had exposed her to many horrors.
Seizing the moment, Da Lou hurled the chain, hooking it around the giant’s neck—he prepared to fling the other end off the tracks, using the train’s massive inertia—hundreds of tons moving at speed—to rip the giant’s head off.
But the white giant was too fast—before Da Lou could act, it seized the chain and swung!
Da Lou couldn’t react in time—he was yanked along, about to be flung off the train—but he gritted his teeth, gripping the chain tightly, swinging halfway around in midair and landing on the roof of Car 5.
“Brother, watch out!!”
Lou Shasha heard a thud above and screamed in alarm.
Then footsteps sounded overhead—she knew her brother hadn’t been thrown off, and quickly reloaded the launcher, preparing to fire again.
The white giant tore the chain from its neck, heard Lou Shasha reloading, and without hesitation, lunged again at Car 5.
Boom!
This time, at point-blank range, the grenade’s blast wave hurled tiny Lou Shasha backward—the explosion detonated at the giant’s feet, trapping its lower half in the flatcar coupling while its upper body climbed onto the roof, forcing it to swipe downward with its long claws.
Boom! Again—the air conditioning system on Car 5’s roof shattered and caved in.
