Chapter 390: Christmas Special - Lake dance
The next morning, the grove shimmered with frost. Tiny icicles hung from branches, and a soft layer of snow dusted the ground, sparkling in the sunlight. Beneath the glowing Christmas tree, the gifts piled up, secret and mysterious, filling the grove with a sense of quiet anticipation.
Thalanir stood slightly apart, eyes twinkling with mischief. "I have an idea," he said, voice carrying a note of excitement. Everyone turned to him, curiosity piqued.
"What is it?" Maelin asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet.
Thalanir gestured toward the forest, toward the frozen lake that reflected the pale morning light. "The lake should be frozen solid by now. In my old village, we used to skate on it during the winter. It’s perfect for some fun."
Renkai raised an eyebrow. "Skating? On ice? You’re serious?"
"I’m serious," Thalanir said, with a grin. "And to make it more exciting... I brought something." From beneath his cloak, he pulled out a set of carefully carved wooden ice skates. The grain of the wood gleamed, polished and smooth, each blade honed and shaped to glide over ice.
Everyone gasped. Serelyth’s eyes widened as she flapped her wings softly. "Wood... skates? You made these?"
Thalanir’s grin widened. "Just for this occasion. I wanted us to experience a little winter magic. Come, I’ll show you how to use them."
Lira laughed, holding Renkai’s hand. "This is... unexpected, but I love it. Let’s try it!"
The group made their way to the lake. The surface was a solid, shimmering mirror of frozen silver, reflecting the snow-dusted trees around it. Fluffy bounced ahead, sliding across the ice with small, excited jumps, furry tail flicking with delight.
Thalanir stepped onto the ice first, demonstrating graceful glides and spins, the wooden blades whispering over the frozen surface. "It’s all about balance and rhythm," he explained, twirling smoothly. "Feel the ice beneath your feet, let it guide you."
Renkai hesitated at the edge, toes nervously testing the ice. "I don’t... like slipping," he muttered, but he couldn’t hide the sparkle of curiosity in his eyes.
Lira squeezed his hand. "I’ll be right here. Try it with me."
Slowly, Renkai stepped onto the ice, wobbling at first. Lira matched his pace, hands still clasped, and together they moved in small, careful steps. Soon, he found a rhythm, and a grin spread across his face as the ice whispered beneath the wooden skates.
Maelin and Patricia took off eagerly, spinning and laughing, leaving glittering trails behind them. Serelyth, in her dragon form but carefully shrinking to ride on the ice, flitted across in graceful arcs, wings lifting slightly to maintain balance. Even Thalanir, playful as ever, created small patterns in the ice that looked like delicate frost filigree.
The grove echoed with laughter and the soft scraping of skates against ice. The world felt magical, suspended between snowflakes and sunlight, the warmth of friendship and the thrill of discovery filling every corner.
As they skated, Renkai glanced at Lira, eyes softening. "You make everything better," he said quietly, leaning close as they glided together. Lira smiled, feeling the pulse of life around her—the Grove, her friends, and this moment of pure joy.
Thalanir glided across the ice effortlessly, each movement smooth and elegant. His wooden skates whispered over the frozen surface, leaving delicate arcs and swirls behind him. He laughed lightly, a teasing sparkle in his eyes. "See? It’s all about balance and letting the ice guide you," he called to the others, spinning in a flawless twirl.
Serelyth didn’t even hesitate. Her scaled claws adapted perfectly to the wooden blades, and she moved across the ice with the grace of a wind-blown leaf. She leaned slightly, wings brushing the surface of the frozen lake, and carved long, flowing patterns that glimmered faintly in the winter sun.
Renkai, on the other hand, was a comedy of missteps. He stepped onto the ice, legs stiff, and immediately wobbled dangerously. His tail fluffed in alarm, and he let out a short yelp. "I’m... fine!" he muttered, only to slip sideways and spin in a small circle, barely keeping his balance. Fluffy barked and darted around his feet, adding to the chaos.
Lira bit back a laugh, holding her hands out. "Careful, Renkai!" she called. He finally managed to steady himself, and soon his awkward shuffling became a kind of funny, hopping glide, leaving small scratch marks on the ice with each attempt. Every slip and stumble made the group laugh, but Lira could see the sparkle of determination in his eyes.
Maelin and Patricia adapted quickly. At first they wobbled slightly, but soon they were spinning and weaving between the others, laughing as they created trails of frosty patterns behind them. "This is amazing!" Patricia cheered, arms outstretched, while Maelin laughed, barely staying upright for a moment before catching the rhythm perfectly.
Thalanir turned his attention to Lira, skating beside her in a steady circle. "Relax your knees... feel the ice beneath you... trust yourself," he coached, moving slowly so she could follow his lead. At first, Lira shuffled awkwardly, gripping the edges of her gloves tightly, but gradually she felt the subtle give and flow of the ice. Her balance improved, and soon she was gliding across the frozen lake on her own, laughter spilling from her lips as she twirled gently, leaving a silvery trail behind her.
Renkai stumbled close to her, nearly colliding, and Lira caught his arm to steady him. "Hey, at least you’re trying," she teased softly. He managed a sheepish grin. "I’ll get better... eventually."
The group moved together, a mixture of elegance, chaos, and joyful experimentation. Thalanir occasionally spun gracefully past them, showing off a little too much, while Serelyth darted and glided, leaving streaks of shimmering frost in her wake. Renkai’s clumsy antics made everyone laugh, and Lira couldn’t help but feel warmth in her chest, holding onto him lightly as they skated side by side.
The frozen lake had become a stage for friendship, fun, and gentle teasing. Every slip, every glide, and every swirl of laughter made the winter morning feel magical—a perfect blend of mischief, learning, and the quiet joy of being together in the snow.
Even though Fluffy had followed them almost everywhere, ice was clearly not his element. The little bundle of fur puffed up as he tentatively approached the frozen lake, tail bristling like a tiny feathered brush. He tried to follow Lira, taking careful, cautious steps, but the slippery surface betrayed him. With a startled yelp, he rolled clumsily across the ice, sliding on his back in a flurry of fur and tiny paws.
Lira immediately skated over, kneeling down and scooping him up into her arms. "It’s okay, Fluffy," she whispered softly, pressing him to her chest. "This isn’t something you should try—it’s too slippery for you."
Fluffy clung to her tightly, paws grasping her coat as if his life depended on it. His little nose pressed against her scarf, eyes wide but trusting. Everyone around them burst into laughter at the sight: Renkai shaking his head with an amused grin, Thalanir chuckling softly, and even Serelyth letting out a soft trill of mirth as she hovered above.
Lira hugged Fluffy gently. "There, see? Safe and warm. No ice today for you, okay?" Fluffy relaxed slightly, nuzzling her as though agreeing wholeheartedly, and the sight of him clinging to her like that made everyone laugh even more.
Serelyth let out a soft trill and said, "I’ll get something for you all to eat," before lifting into the air with a graceful sweep of her wings. Moments later, she returned to the frozen lake, carrying a bundle of warm tea and sandwiches, carefully balanced in her claws. The aroma of herbs and freshly baked bread drifted over the group, mingling with the crisp, snowy air.
They gathered around one of the fallen logs at the lake’s edge, settling down to enjoy the simple meal. Lira handed Fluffy a tiny scrap of bread, watching him nibble happily while snuggling against her. Renkai sighed, brushing snow off his coat, and muttered, "I can’t believe how clumsy I was on that ice..."
"Oh, don’t worry," Thalanir teased, a sly grin on his face. "You might be clumsy, but at least you give us something to laugh at."
Everyone laughed, even Renkai, though he shook his head, pretending to scowl. "It wasn’t funny!" he protested, though a hint of a smile tugged at his lips.
They chatted and laughed about how quickly Maelin, Patricia, and even Lira had picked up ice skating. "I can’t believe how fast you all learned," Renkai said, genuinely impressed.
Thalanir leaned closer to Renkai, an impish glint in his eyes. "Think you could be faster than me?" he asked, half teasing, half challenging.
Renkai’s ears flicked in surprise, and then he straightened, a spark of competitiveness lighting up his expression. "Oh, I’ll show you," he muttered. "Let’s race—first one to the other side of the lake wins."
Lira grinned, watching the friendly rivalry spark between the two. Serelyth chuckled softly, shaking her silver-white head. "You two never change. Alright... ready, set, go!"
With a playful shout, Renkai and Thalanir shot forward, blades of wood skimming over the ice as everyone else cheered and laughed, the cold air alive with joy, camaraderie, and the simple magic of winter fun.
