Chapter 313: The Mellon Family (3/3)

~8 min read 1,470 words

Watching all the robbers being taken away and all the hostages rescued, Qin Yun turned and left.

The Kenyan police were utterly baffled; they had investigated for a long time without any leads, when suddenly a call from above informed them the case was solved and ordered them to wrap it up.

When questioned, the hostages were all equally confused, sobbing uncontrollably; the pressure of the past few days had finally lifted, and they all vowed never to return to Kenya again.

This left the Kenyan police utterly helpless and deeply embarrassed.

Yet at the same time, they breathed a sigh of relief—at least no one had died, no one needed to be held accountable, and they might even gain some credit; who else but that lion could have done it? Now it was clear: the other side had clearly given them face, quietly resolving the matter themselves.

The next morning!

Kenyan President Ruto met with Guo Feiyan.

No matter how subtly Ruto probed, Guo Feiyan merely smiled and deflected, insisting the incident was pure coincidence and had nothing to do with them.

Though Ruto suspected otherwise, he had indeed received no intelligence about any foreign force entering the country.

Though the matter was resolved, Ruto now felt a thorn in his heart—and even greater unease.

If someone could quietly resolve what Kenyan police could not, they could surely do many other things. Even between brothers, boundaries must be clear—how much more so between two nations.

After bidding farewell to Ruto, Guo Feiyan checked the time and called home.

"Hahaha, I told you Xiao Qin could do it."

The laughter on the other end was bright and unrestrained.

Guo Feiyan smiled: "I never expected Xiao Qin to resolve it in just two days—it's utterly unexpected."

"The young man has ability. Special matters require special handling. We'll need to carefully consider what reward to give him."

Guo Feiyan nodded: "Xiao Qin said he doesn't want to be seen—he wants a low-key resolution."

"Same last time. Let him have his way," came the hearty laugh on the other end. "If we make a big show of it given his status, it would only harm him."

After chatting a while, the voice on the other end finally asked: "How's the investigation going?"

Guo Feiyan's smile vanished; she grew solemn: "It's still that old eagle pulling strings behind the scenes—we've traced the shadow of the Mellon family."

"The Mellon family!"

The voice on the other end murmured: "That old eagle's Qian family is extending its hands further than ever."

The Mellon surname, in America, was a household name among old financial dynasties—controlling banking, energy, aluminum, defense, media, and every industry imaginable, a true titan. Most importantly, this family was deeply entwined with the U. S. military and political establishment—it could hardly be called merely a business family.

Guo Feiyan waited in silence, saying nothing.

After a moment, the voice on the other end said: "I understand. Go and personally comfort the kidnapped hostages."

"Yes."

After hanging up, Guo Feiyan got into her car and left the embassy.

……

Qin Yun, who had not slept all night, remained fully alert.

Resolving the hostage situation required almost no effort on his part. The greatest difficulty had merely been locating them—he used a lottery system, monetary incentives, and a program to obtain the coordinates; after that, everything else was simple.

The outcome looked dramatic, but the process had no turbulence whatsoever—the hardest part was solved upfront, so resolving the hostage case was merely inevitable.

After breakfast, Qin Yun prepared to leave.

To return from Kenya to Hangzhou, he first had to reach Nairobi, the capital, and depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

But as his Corolla drove down the road, he spotted two black Chevrolets.

The driver in the first car—Oku—was deeply uneasy. He had seen the morning news reporting the bus hijacking solved and all kidnappers captured, and immediately knew trouble was coming. Without hesitation, he decided to flee at once, fearing Farah might implicate him.

He had only just learned the bus hijacking was carried out by Farah and his crew—and now it was clear: the mastermind behind this entire affair was undoubtedly his own boss.

He himself being arrested didn't matter—but if the Third Young Lady also ended up in prison, that would be catastrophic.

In the back seat, Scarlett's face was dark with displeasure.

"Mr. Oku, can you give me even one reason?"

Oku gave a bitter smile: "Young Lady, I've already said it—I received confidential intelligence that chaos was coming to Kenya, so we must leave immediately."

"I don't accept that excuse."

Oku sighed helplessly: "It's the boss's order. I have no choice."

"Hmph!"

Emily sat silently beside her, saying nothing. She was only Scarlett's close friend—but her friend's family affairs were not her place to meddle in, not even to ask a single question.

Emily knew full well the Mellon family's status in America.

"Ring-ring-ring!"

Qin Yun pressed answer, and Guo Feiyan's voice came through.

"Xiao Qin, when are you planning to return home?"

"Ambassador Guo, I'm just heading to Nairobi now. Once there, I'll see if I can catch a flight today and leave immediately."

Guo Feiyan laughed: "Go straight to Beijing—someone's waiting for you."

Qin Yun's heart stirred: "Did they say what it's about?"

Qin Yun had planned to return directly to Hangzhou.

"You'll find out when you get there. Rest assured, it's nothing bad."

Qin Yun sighed and changed the subject: "Ambassador Guo, who was behind these kidnappers?"

Guo Feiyan wasn't surprised by Qin Yun's question—anyone could see this was no random act; behind it lay clear conspiracy. How could a group of local Kenyans possibly have the brains to kidnap so many Chinese citizens?

"That old eagle is pulling strings. The Mellon family's shadow is involved."

This was classified information, but Guo Feiyan didn't conceal it—Qin Yun had been fully involved and saved everyone; he had every right to know.

"The Mellon family?"

Qin Yun's gaze sharpened: "What does this family do?"

"The Mellon family is America's Qian family—an old financial dynasty controlling critical industries like energy, media, banking, and defense. This kidnapping was likely meant to sow discord between China and Kenya. I suspect more plans were coming—but they never got the chance to unfold, thanks to you."

Qin Yun was silent for a moment, then said slowly, "Ambassador Guo, if I told you I've already had contact with someone from the Mellon family, would you believe it?"

Guo Feiyan was taken aback: "What do you mean?"

"The two vehicles driving ahead of me are two Chevrolets. Sitting inside is a woman called Scarlett Mellon, with whom I've had some contact. Her several drivers and bodyguards are no simple matter. I didn't know before, but now hearing you say it, it suddenly clicked."

"Scarlett Mellon." Guo Feiyan chewed on the name for a moment, thought it over, then said, "I remember now. This woman is the third daughter of the current head of the Mellon family."

Saying so, she said calmly, "You don't need to pay it any mind. There will be a corresponding way to handle it."

"Alright, got it."

Hanging up the phone, Qin Yun looked at the car ahead, and for no reason a wave of disgust rose in his heart—disgust toward that Scarlett Mellon inside.

Even if the other party was unaware, the interests she represented were destined to make Qin Yun develop a sense of aversion toward her.

He knew rabbits play chess in Africa, while the Hawk plays chess across the whole world—this might be a game of nations. But what the Hawk's side has done can truly be called a perfect interpretation of what hypocrisy means.

On the surface they hang freedom and human rights on their lips, but behind the scenes their belly is full of scheming. Relying on their power, they form cliques and stir up trouble all over the world—textbook double-dealing. They throw their weight around thanks to their deep pockets, and on top of that can't stand others being at peace, planting eyes and informants everywhere, backing lackeys, stirring other countries into total chaos, acting with not a shred of bottom line.

If this time the Mellon family is behind it pulling strings, that really is the height of disgusting.

Maybe the Mellon family is purely just trying to disgust the Rabbit-Ken relationship; whether they achieve their goal doesn't even matter. But what's tangled up in this is twelve innocent lives.

Like that night—if he had arrived a step later, Jiang Xia would definitely have been violated.

Following behind the car, he pondered for a moment, then quietly sighed.

"Forget it. I'm just a small streamer. The country has its own considerations."
