Chapter 624 - 632: Husband
"Thrown away? Did you really throw it away?" Although Jane Sampson had suspected as much, she still felt a small twinge of disappointment when she heard James Black mention so casually that he had disposed of it.
It was the first time Jane had given James a gift. It might not have been expensive, and she originally had a faint desire to irritate him, but she had been very thoughtful while making the little turtle, taking great care to find the perfect leaves and attaching them very carefully so they wouldn’t get damaged.
Jane thought the little turtle was quite cute and adorable.
Yet this guy really threw it away.
"What’s the use of keeping it?" James averted his gaze from Jane’s face.
Was she upset that he said he threw it away?
"Self-criticism report..." James suddenly asked, "Do you remember how you referred to me in that report?"
"Daddy Black?" Jane blurted out, then hastily shook her head and corrected herself as she saw the dark look on James’s face, "No, wrong, I mean Lord Husband?"
She had written several drafts, all of them addressing him as ’daddy Black,’ but thinking that it would only infuriate James more, she changed it in the final version.
"Drop the last two words," James let out with an amused huff.
"Husband?" Jane repeated, puzzled.
"Say it again." James’s expression lightened considerably.
"Husband~" Jane repeated obediently, for once.
With a smile in his eyes, James hummed an acknowledgment with clear delight before speaking again, "We’ll leave it at that, and not make a habit of it."
"You’re not going to hold it against me?" Jane was stunned to hear James let it go, "Are you seriously just letting it slide?"
"Why, would you rather I asked you to rewrite it?" James asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, no, no!" Jane waved her hands frantically, "Let it be! It’s great just like that!"
At this moment, Jane was convinced that James had been drinking, and probably a lot at that. Maybe he was even drunk or befuddled by the alcohol.
It must be that her nose wasn’t working properly, so she couldn’t detect the strong smell of alcohol on him!
She needed to go to the hospital’s otorhinolaryngology department to get her malfunctioning nose fixed.
"So, locking me out also won’t be held against you?" As Jane said this, her lips curled up in a smug smile, barely containing her amusement.
Upon hearing James hum an acknowledgment, Jane happily wrapped her arms around James’s waist and started to heap flattery on him, "You’re really the best! The very, very best!"
She was so good that it made her doubt whether the James who came back tonight was the real one!
Such a serious matter, and he just let it go!
With her heart uplifted, Jane no longer felt upset about James throwing away the gift she had given him. Pleasant words spilled from her as if they cost her nothing.
She really had a knack for appeasing people, didn’t she? Even James, who was difficult to please, was won over by her charms. In the business of charming people, she, Jane Sampson, must surely rank as the best in the world.
But now Jane faced a conundrum; she had no idea how she had managed to pacify James.
If there were a next time, she still wouldn’t know what to do.
"Get up, I’m going to take a bath," James said, patting Jane’s head affectionately.
Jane quickly got off James’s legs and with a cheerful smile watched him proceed to the bedroom. Once he was out of sight, she lay back on the sofa, hugging the backrest, and felt so excited she almost wanted to dance for joy.
Remembering that James mentioned he had been drinking at a social event, Jane took advantage of his bath time to head to the kitchen and prepared a rare act of genteelness by making a cup of honey lemon water. She then stood expectantly at the bathroom doorway.
As soon as James emerged from the bathroom, she offered him the cup in her hand with a beaming smile, her face oozing flattery, "James, have some of this to help with the alcohol."
