Chapter 665 - 673: Our Foster Daughter
She was like an assistant to Charlotte Miller, or you could say she was like a backdrop. Morning finally passed, and by noon, Charlotte Miller unusually spoke to her in kind and even gave her a few smiles, her tone carrying a hint of flattery. Julie Sampton naturally felt a sense of relief in her heart.
Yet what was infuriating was that this sense of relief had to come through Jane Sampson’s husband of all people.
And when she had greeted James Black in the elevator just now, he had indeed been excessively cold.
Fortunately, Charlotte Miller didn’t sense anything amiss.
"Yes, my brother-in-law is part of the guard team and he’s in the Capital Province Guard," Julie Sampton suppressed her dislike for Jane and spoke with a hint of pride, "My brother-in-law hails from a family with a long history in the guard, his uncle and grandfather were both guards, and he himself naturally became one too. Though he’s young, everyone says his future is unlimited. He is now the Chief of the team area he’s part of and I can proudly say that he’s the youngest Chief in the entire guard team’s record."
"What is his name?" asked Charlotte Miller, her voice tinged with regret, "I had no idea he was already married."
"James Black." Julie Sampton said.
"Handsome guys always seem to have nice names," Charlotte Miller scoffed, "But how come I never heard you have a sister?"
Charlotte Miller knew that Julie’s family had some minor connections, but nothing extraordinarily influential, so Julie’s current position was simply as a small show host. Advancing any higher seemed nearly impossible.
"Oh, she’s our foster daughter," Julie said nonchalantly, "A foster daughter—what’s there to mention about that?"
"Foster daughter? Are you kidding me, your family’s foster daughter married such an impressive husband? How come you, their biological daughter, didn’t marry over there? To be the Chief’s wife, I never expected it would be a foster daughter’s turn," Charlotte Miller found Julie’s words somewhat unbelievable.
Julie was left speechless by Charlotte’s questioning.
Yes, anyone who knew of this matter but didn’t know the full story, their first comment would be to question why the ’foster daughter’ she spoke of was able to marry so well.
And here she was, the biological daughter of the Sampton Family, still without a presentable partner.
"You’ve talked so much about all the things your brother-in-law is involved in, but why didn’t you mention his parents? Given his current status, his parents must be quite powerful, right? They can’t be some minister or director of some sort, can they?" Charlotte was curious.
"His mother passed away very early, and as for his father’s affairs, I am not familiar with them, I’ve never met him, perhaps he’s passed away too," Julie, who had only returned to the Sampton family in her teens, certainly wouldn’t know about James Black’s family affairs.
Julie thought, perhaps even Jane Sampson wasn’t clear about her father-in-law’s matters.
After all, when Jane and James got married, James’s father didn’t attend the wedding feast, and not a single one of his father’s relatives appeared.
Inside the great courtyard, no one would bring up anything about James’s father, naturally, this meant that the younger generation like Julie and Jane had no way of knowing. "No in-laws to contend with upon marrying into the family, becoming the lady of a high-status household right away, why did your parents let the foster daughter marry him?" Charlotte was now even more envious, "For us women, isn’t the most desirable thing to marry a wealthy and influential husband, and even better if he’s an orphan? If I were you, I’d never let such a good thing slip into an outsider’s hands."
