Chapter 664 - 672: Who Is It?

~3 min read 594 words

James Black remained indifferent, casting a glance at Julie Sampton, he nodded his head slightly, not even bothering to utter a sound of acknowledgment.

It was only when she heard Julie’s voice that Jane Sampson peered through the gap and noticed among the crowd ahead that one was Charlotte Miller and the other was Julie Sampton.

Just at this time, as luck would have it, the elevator reached the first floor. Charlotte and Julie exited with the rest of the crowd, and James, with swift hands, pressed the close button. He didn’t even spare a glance to Julie who was still outside, wanting to talk to him, and continued to hug Jane as they took the elevator down to the underground parking garage.

When the elevator reached basement Level 1, Jane was led out by James, who was still embracing her. She straightened her hood and asked in a low voice, "Did you see them just now?"

"Yes," James took Jane’s hand and located their car, then quickly opened the passenger door, ushering her into the vehicle.

"Then why didn’t you tell me?" Jane muttered to herself as she reached for the seatbelt and fastened it.

"What would you have done if I had told you?" James circled around to take the driver’s seat, shut the door, and then turned to ask Jane.

"Nothing really," Jane shook her head, "Do you think they saw me?"

"Julie is too short, she couldn’t see you from where she stood, but I’m not sure about Charlotte." James glanced at Jane, who wore a mask and oversized glasses, so he couldn’t see her expression.

Was she afraid of Julie seeing her, or of Charlotte seeing her?

Or rather, was she worried about who among the two would see him by her side?

"There’s some time before we meet for our meal, have a drink of water first." James handed the thermos to Jane; it was still warm due to its excellent insulation.

After Jane merely responded with an "Oh," clearly distracted and lost in thought, James directly reached over to remove the mask and sunglasses from her face. As she turned to look at him, James spoke with a faint voice, "You’re already in the car, why the need for all that? I feel suffocated on your behalf."

Having said that, James started the car and drove out of the parking garage.

On the first floor of the hospital, Charlotte Miller, unusually enthusiastic, was pulling on Julie Sampton, whom she’d barely acknowledged all morning. With a curious expression, she pressed, "Julie, that brother-in-law you just called out, who is he? It wasn’t that particularly tall and handsome guy in the elevator, was it?"

Before Julie could respond, Charlotte eagerly sought a definitive answer, pressing further, "Is your brother-in-law a guard? Or the Chief?"

Julie’s expression carried a hint of pride as she gazed at Charlotte’s careful and ingratiating demeanor—happy yet infuriated simultaneously.

Although both she and Charlotte were hosts, Charlotte was the sought-after host, the big sister, nearly in a different league compared to a minor host like herself.

Today, she had come to the hospital with Charlotte to visit the leader’s wife and incidentally to conduct an interview, but from the moment they met, Charlotte hadn’t looked at her properly. Every word she said and every tone she used had an air of arrogance and disdain.

Throughout the entire morning, Julie hadn’t received any less disdain from Charlotte. As she wasn’t as famous, Julie was practically reduced to watching the interview subjects engage almost exclusively with Charlotte.
