Chapter 410: A Bold Guess
The thieves, after pulling off the robbery, killed a key person, cutting off all leads in the case.
The officers all turned to look at Xu Mo.
They were out of options, so they could only pin their hopes on Xu Mo, seeing if he had any new insight.
Realizing everyone was staring at him, Xu Mo couldn't help but wipe his face.
Just looking at me, what are you doing! You should think of a plan too! You can't rely entirely on me, can you?
Nevertheless, Xu Mo didn't complain; instead, he reviewed all the clues they had gathered so far and kept pondering.
What they currently know is that the thieves who robbed the Insurance Company's vault were not a single person but a gang, which is indisputable; one person couldn't have done all this.
The thieves split into two groups, coordinating inside and out.
One infiltrated the Insurance Company, tampered in the Power Supply Room, burning wires and sabotaging the generator, causing the entire company to lose power for a long period.
During the blackout, the company's surveillance failed, and the electrically powered vault doors and multiple security checkpoints also went down, preventing the staff from entering the vault promptly to stop the thieves from looting it.
The main body of the gang also took advantage of the blackout to blast through the vault wall, enter, and strip everything inside.
Later, to cover their tracks, they killed the member who had infiltrated the Power Supply Room.
Because that person was killed, all investigative leads were severed; the deceased was the only gang member the police have identified so far. His death makes the case much harder, and the police have completely lost any chance of catching the remaining thieves.
Coordinated inside and out, followed by post‑crime murder to silence witnesses… the plan is thorough, and the gang has cut off all leads; Xu Mo also feels the case is rather tricky.
"So, any thoughts?" Han Fei asked.
"None...," Xu Mo shook his head, answering honestly.
"Perhaps we should start with the murder scene and the surveillance around the Insurance Company; there might be clues," Li Chen offered his idea.
"That works...," Han Fei mused, "Treat a dead horse as if it were alive."
Although Li Chen's suggestion wasn't ideal, it was the only option left.
That said, Han Fei didn't place much hope in Li Chen's method.
The thieves clearly came prepared, were highly professional and cold‑blooded; to cover their tracks, they even killed one of their own.
They are professionals; since they could execute the plan to this extent and kill to silence, it shows they had thorough pre‑planning and wouldn't leave any trace in the murder scene or surrounding footage.
Therefore, in Han Fei's view, focusing on the murder scene and its surveillance is unlikely to yield useful findings.
The officers sealed off the scene and meticulously examined the clues left behind, while Xu Mo continued to consider whether there were other inconsistencies in the case.
He kept feeling he had missed a crucial point… there must be something else that doesn't add up!
He decided to go back inside the Insurance Company for another look.
Xu Mo lifted the police cordon, left the alley, and returned inside the Insurance Company.
At that moment, several Insurance Company employees were discussing the theft.
"Do you know how much the stolen items from the vault are worth in total?"
"I don't know, but I'd guess at least a hundred million,"
"One hundred million? Your estimate is small. Let me tell you… when the manager called the police today, I heard that everything in our vault totals close to ten hundred million!"
"Holy crap! Ten hundred million?! If all that is gone, our boss will be ruined,"
"What does it matter to us? We're just employees; this doesn't concern us,"
"I can't put it that way; I feel our boss is also quite pitiful, those thieves really aren't anything."
"You ****, did a donkey kick your brain? Still feeling sorry for the capitalist, you're really despicable!"
"Fine, what's the point of talking about this? We don't even know if the police can recover the stolen goods. If they can't, we'll be out of a job..."
"I think it's enough to be angry; what can those cops do? They don't even know how to interrogate. I bet this case will just fizzle out."
"Pah pah pah, don't say defeatist stuff; I don't want to be unemployed."
"You don't really expect them to retrieve the stolen items, do you? I tell you, it's impossible! If the police could actually get the stolen goods back… I'd take my head off and use it as a ball for you to kick!"
"……"
Even though he was some distance from the employees, Xu Mo's hearing was sharp, and he caught their conversation crystal clear.
"The Insurance Company's boss...," Xu Mo muttered involuntarily.
He seemed to realize what the missing illogical piece was.
The most illogical aspect of the case is that the Insurance Company's boss never appeared at any point!
The Insurance Company was robbed, and everything that customers stored in the vault was completely stolen.
The stolen items total a value close to ten hundred million.
That's an astronomical figure; even for a successful entrepreneur, ten hundred million is far from a small sum.
If the stolen goods can't be recovered, the Insurance Company's boss will have to bear the loss, paying compensation, and the amount he may face could far exceed ten hundred million, perhaps even double that.
Isn't the boss of the Insurance Company anxious, not scared?
If he were anxious or scared, why wouldn't he come by, even just to check on the investigation's progress?
He hasn't come, as if he doesn't care at all—this is very suspicious.
Suddenly, Xu Mo had a bold conjecture in his mind.
He immediately went to find the manager.
"Where is your boss now?"
"Huh? My boss..." the manager stammered, "I... I don't know."
"You don't know? Didn't you tell him about the company's theft?"
The manager nodded, "I did. As soon as it happened, I called him."
"What was his reaction?" Xu Mo asked, staring at the manager.
"He cursed at me a few times and hung up."
"He didn't say he would..."
"No."
"And you didn't even let me call the police!?"
"No…," from Xu Mo's words the manager caught his meaning, and saw him staring bewildered at Xu Mo: "Police officer, you wouldn't suspect our boss…?"
