Chapter 417: The Whole Story

~7 min read 1,317 words

Han Fei handcuffed the man while the other officers jogged over here.

"You okay?" Han Fei asked subconsciously to the few officers who had just nearly been knocked down.

They all shook their heads.

"All right, Han Team, thanks to your shot the kid got scared and turned around right away."

"Yeah, thanks Han Team. If it hadn't been you just now, we might have been doomed."

"Thanks, Han Team…"

Seeing everyone okay, Han Fei finally felt the weight lift from his heart.

"All right as long as everyone's okay… you guys put him in the police car, I'll call the traffic police and have them come handle it," Han Fei said, looking at the truck whose front had been crushed and the barrier in the middle of the road.

After a traffic accident, you naturally need to contact the traffic police.

Besides dealing with the crash, Han Fei also needed the traffic police to call a tow truck and haul the box truck back to the Police Station.

Of course, before the tow, Han Fei had to verify whether the truck was carrying the stolen items.

Several officers put the man into the police car and moved the police car that was blocking the road to the side; now that the suspect was caught, they no longer needed to block the road, and moving the car also prevented traffic obstruction.

After pulling out his phone and calling the traffic department to explain the situation, Han Fei went to the back of the truck and opened the cargo hold.

Inside the cargo hold were wooden crates one after another, each containing valuable items; presumably these were the stolen goods from the Insurance Company.

The stolen items had been recovered and the suspect was in custody, so Han Fei finally breathed a sigh of relief; next he only needed to bring the suspect back to the Police Station for interrogation.

Han Fei also remembered to call Xu Mo to inform him that the suspect was in custody.

……

Police Station.

Interrogation Room.

"Wang Yufei, thirty-one, unmarried, both parents deceased, unemployed, has served two prison terms, and is also a frequent visitor to the Police Station… your résumé is quite extensive," Han Fei said, staring at the man seated in the interrogation chair.

He said nothing, just remained silent.

"Do you know why we caught you?" Han Fei continued.

The man kept his head down and stayed silent, not uttering a word.

Han Fei has seen many suspects who, once arrested, remain silent and say nothing.

In some cases, staying silent doesn't let you escape disaster.

"Now that we've got both you and the loot, do you think staying silent will let you escape? The cargo hold in the back of that truck you drove contains the items stolen from the Insurance Company, right?"

Seeing the man still unresponsive, Han Fei slammed the table and said, "Speak!"

The man finally spoke.

He lifted his expressionless head, met Han Fei's eyes, and asked, "How long will I be sentenced… can I ever get out in the second half of my life? Or is it straight death?"

Before Han Fei could answer, he gave a wry smile and muttered to himself, though it was unclear what he was grumbling about.

He could probably guess his own fate.

The crimes—stealing items worth up to a billion, kidnapping, murder, robbery, Police Assault…—any one of them alone would be enough for him to drink a pot, let alone all together.

His life had finally reached its end.

"Can you give me a cigarette? I'm afraid I won't be able to smoke later," the man said, looking at Han Fei.

Han Fei thought for a moment, then nodded; based on his experience, the man's request meant he was likely ready to confess.

He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, took out a cigarette, stood up, handed it to the man, lit it for him, then returned to his seat and waited quietly.

At that moment, the Interrogation Room was unusually quiet, so quiet that only the sound of tobacco burning could be heard.

After a moment, the man finished his cigarette, leaned back on the interrogation chair with a relaxed face, and began to recount.

"About three months ago, I broke into a house to steal and was caught red-handed by the homeowner, but he didn't call anyone or report it; instead, he gave me a large sum of money and a business card, saying to contact him if I ever needed money again…"

"That money came too easily, so I spent it within a few days. Later I remembered the guy, recalled that he said to contact him when I was short of cash, and on a whim I called him."

"The guy's name is Zhang Quan; he runs an Insurance Company. He told me that his insurance vault contains many treasures, and he wants to steal everything, sell it, and flee with the money. He couldn't do it alone and was worried, then I showed up, so he wanted to rope me in."

As he spoke, the man extended a finger.

"He told me that once the job was done, I'd get this amount—ten million! I've never seen that much money in my life… When I was very young, my parents died, no one looked after me, so I survived by petty theft, spent time in a juvenile detention center, the police station, and even a big prison. Later, no one would hire me. I thought if I could get ten million, I could return to a normal life, so I agreed."

"But the two of us alone couldn't pull it off, so I contacted seven former cellmates I had served time with, got them to help. We planned together for a long time, spent several months devising a foolproof plan, and chose today to act."

"Wait… seven? What about your other accomplices?" Han Fei interrupted the man's story.

"They're dead," the man replied. "I had Lao Er kill them all; too many mouths, easy to leak. Plus they wanted to split the ten million—eight people sharing, I'd only get a little over a million, and I didn't want to split with them."

Xu Mo, who had remained silent, now joined in.

"The 'second' you mentioned, is he the slightly dark-skinned man you stabbed to death at the abandoned factory entrance?" Xu Mo asked.

"Yes." At this point, the man no longer wanted to deny anything and confessed fully: "I told Lao Er to kill the remaining six after the job, so the two of us could split the ten million—five million each. He gladly agreed."

"But you didn't even want to split the five million with him, so after he killed the other six, you killed him too?" Xu Mo asked.

The man nodded.

He then continued.

"Five million isn't a small sum; of course I didn't want to give it to him. I only wanted to use him, so I planned to kill him afterward, allowing me to keep the entire ten million for myself."

"I hadn't planned to kill Zhang Quan. After all, if it weren't for him I couldn't get the ten million. But before today's operation he slipped up; the items in his Insurance Company's vault are worth close to ten billion—ten billion! He can earn that much yet only intended to give me ten million… In a fit of rage I bound him, forced him to reveal the buyer's contact, even extracted his bank card password, and then I killed him."

"I didn't expect that, while I was driving to find the buyer, I ran into you."

He paused, and a puzzled expression appeared on his face.

"I want to know how you managed to track me down so quickly. I thought I'd covered my tracks; everyone else who knew about the operation is dead."
