Chapter 442: Victim Shielding the Arsonist?

~6 min read 1,082 words

When first meeting this victim, her emotions were relatively stable.

However, as soon as Xu Mo took out his phone and showed her a surveillance video, her emotions instantly became agitated.

The woman lying on the hospital bed, due to losing control of her emotions, gasped heavily in large breaths.

From her expression, Xu Mo could not tell; she seemed very angry.

Does she know this person? Xu Mo thought, "You recognize the person in the video, right? Who is she?"

Hearing this, the woman opened her mouth, but could not speak.

After a moment, her emotions gradually calmed, her face expressionless.

"I don't know."

She was lying; Xu Mo saw at a glance that she was lying, a level of deceit even without any knowledge of psychology he could discern.

Before Xu Mo could continue questioning, the woman began to feign illness: "I suddenly feel a bit unwell; could you go get Dr. Liang for me?"

This was clearly an attempt to avoid answering Xu Mo's question.

She knows the person in the video, but she refuses to answer, unwilling to tell Xu Mo who that person is.

It's too strange; this is Xu Mo's first time meeting a victim who refuses to cooperate, and she is actually covering for the arsonist who burned her… This makes no sense.

Xu Mo couldn't figure out for a moment why the woman was doing this.

"You really don't know her?" he couldn't help asking again.

This time, the woman still shook her head with a resolute expression.

"I don't know."

After speaking, she casually pressed the call button at the bedside.

The next second, Dr. Liang walked in: "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell somewhere?"

"Hmm, the wound hurts a bit," the woman said.

Dr. Liang looked at Xu Mo.

"Officer Xu, perhaps we should end the interrogation here; the patient…"

Xu Mo nodded, indicating understanding, then turned and left the Sterile Ward.

When the Police investigate a case and need to question a patient, they must try to accommodate the patient's emotions and injuries; even if the other party might be faking, they still have to halt the interrogation.

Xu Mo believes the woman clearly knows the arsonist, but she now refuses to tell him, and Xu Mo cannot force her, since she is the victim and has just escaped a life‑threatening situation.

As soon as he left the Sterile Ward, Han Fei and the others immediately gathered around, their faces full of anticipation.

"How's it going? Did you get any results?"

Xu Mo shook his head.

"No, she said she doesn't know the woman who set the fire in the video, but she really does know; she's lying and refuses to reveal the other's identity."

"Refuses to reveal the other's identity?" Han Fei was slightly taken aback, then furrowed his brows and fell into thought.

Victim shielding the arsonist?

This is unreasonable.

It's one thing that the Music Shop where they made a living was burned, but they themselves were severely burned by that fire; logically they should hate the arsonist to the core, so why would they protect the arsonist?

This is too unreasonable.

Han Fei has witnessed Xu Mo's interrogation skills; he doesn't think Xu Mo made a judgment error, so the problem still lies with the victim.

According to Xu Mo, she clearly knows the arsonist yet won't disclose the person's identity, which makes people find it extremely baffling.

Han Fei's eyebrows twisted into a river-like shape, and the more he thought, the more something felt off.

But exactly what was wrong, he had no clue at the moment.

"How about we go to the next ward and ask the other victim?" Li Chen suggested.

A wry smile appeared on Xu Mo's face.

He reached out and pointed toward the ward behind him.

"I haven't asked many questions yet, and the victim said she felt unwell and called Dr. Liang; I doubt Dr. Liang will let me enter another ward."

He paused, then continued.

"And I reckon the other victim probably won't say anything either, so asking would be pointless."

Everyone present nodded involuntarily.

Indeed, Team Leader Xu just went in to ask questions, and the victim immediately claimed to feel unwell; although it might be feigned, Dr. Liang certainly wouldn't take the risk of letting Xu Mo enter another ward for questioning.

Being granted a one‑time exception was already due to the recent favor Team Leader Xu and Han Team did for Dr. Liang.

At that moment, a familiar conversation echoed down the hallway.

"Uncle, I really can't let you in; I've emphasized this to you many times, it's hospital policy."

"Then can you deliver these fruits to my daughter? She loves them the most."

"No, the patient is currently very weak; even if delivered, she couldn't eat them. Keep the fruits for yourself; she can't eat them now."

"Nurse Yang… just make an exception."

"..."

Among the voices, one was very familiar: it was the junior nurse who had earlier stopped Xu Mo and his team from entering the ward.

Looking toward the sound, they saw a middle‑aged man carrying a sack of fruit, trying to be friendly with the junior nurse.

The man's appearance resembled the woman victim in this case; the officers had seen her photo in the file.

Combined with their dialogue, it was easy to guess that the man was the father of the woman lying in the ward.

He wanted to visit his injured daughter, but the request was denied by the junior nurse.

Looking at the man, Xu Mo furrowed his brow; he seemed to have suddenly thought of something, but couldn't fully grasp the fleeting idea.

Han Fei also noticed the man.

He stepped forward a few steps, walking up to this uncle.

"Hello, are you Miss Gao's father?"

"I am, who are you?" the uncle said, somewhat bewildered.

None of them were wearing police uniforms; just by their appearance, one couldn't tell they were police officers.

"We are police officers," Han Fei replied: "We're here to investigate the case."

Han Fei thought that, since the victim was uncooperative, they might be able to find something out from the victim's father.

However, as soon as Han Fei announced his identity, the uncle's expression changed instantly.

Without saying a word, he turned and left.

There's a problem!

"Stop!" Xu Mo shouted.

As soon as his words fell, the uncle simply took off running, as if he had a guilty conscience.
