Chapter 150: Seeing Him Care for Her in the Hospital

~7 min read 1,398 words

When she woke up, the glaring light made her instinctively squint.

The scent at her nostrils was no longer the sharp, heavy smell of gasoline and blood, but the odor of disinfectant.

She was stunned for a few seconds before she realized—

This was a hospital; she was still alive.

In her dazed mind, Gu Yunci appeared, holding her in his arms, his face anxious as he called, "Bai Cixian, Bai Cixian…"

She turned her head toward the bedside, her cracked lips murmuring, "Yunci brother…"

The young nurse beside her arranged the instruments and said, "Awake? Are you calling the gentleman who brought you here? He handled the paperwork, the police also registered you, and since you're not in any life‑threatening danger, the person has already left."

"Left?" she coughed lightly, "Sister, my parents went to Norway; they won't be back for at least four days."

I'm scared; could you call him for me and ask him to find some time to come over?

The nurse, seeing her pitiful state, said, "Alright, I'll ask for you."

The nurse noted the number and left, then at the nurse station dialed, "Hello, Mr. Gu? The patient you sent over last night has already woken up."

She said her parents went to Norway and won't return for four or five days; could you see if you can spare a moment to come to the hospital?

Gu Yunci declined, "Sorry, I'm quite busy over here as well."

The nurse said, "Mr. Gu, I understand. But our nurse station is swamped; new patients arrive every day."

Miss Bai's injuries aren't severe; she hasn't eaten since last night, has a wound on her face, and her emotions are unstable. If you could come to accompany her for some examinations and handle some paperwork so that a caregiver can look after her, that would be fine.

Gu Yunci pursed his lips, "Alright, I'll send someone over in a moment."

After finishing the call, the nurse replied to Bai Cixian, "Mr. Gu said he'll send someone over shortly."

Bai Cixian lay there, "Are my injuries serious?"

The nurse shook her head, "Not serious; your internal organs are fine, no fractures, just a mild concussion and…"

Speaking, the nurse hesitated, looking at her face wrapped in gauze, her eyes full of pity; she's so young, yet her face…

"And what?"

"Nothing. Rest well; you'll be able to leave the hospital in a couple of days."

Having said that, the nurse left.

Gu Yunci had originally planned to send someone, but suddenly thought he wanted to find out who was helping the Meng family rise again, so he decided to go himself.

But as soon as he entered the hospital, he ran into Gu Jin Xing.

Gu Jin Xing was coming down from the upper floor, and Gu Yunci didn't see him.

Seeing him hurry away, he took out his phone and called Meng Shutang, "Shutang, have you arrived at the hospital?"

Meng Shutang was driving, "Not there yet, but I'm on my way."

"Are you feeling unwell again?"

"It's not me. My grandmother woke up this morning feeling dizzy; after I dropped off Xin Xin, I brought her to the hospital for a check‑up. What's wrong?"

"It's fine, I'm also at the hospital; I'll stay with you."

Meng Shutang hung up, drove into the underground garage, then took the elevator with Li Xiuyun up to the third floor.

As Jiangcheng's largest hospital, the Jiangcheng University Affiliated First Hospital is overcrowded every day, and they didn't arrive particularly early.

But because Gu Jin Xing was running back and forth, queuing to buy medicine, it took two hours, and everything was settled.

It was just simple hypertension, so Li Xiuyun felt relieved; the three of them were discussing what to eat later.

Looking up, they saw Gu Yunci pushing a patient toward them.

The patient wore a hospital gown, her face swathed in gauze, and it seemed the worst injury was on her face.

She hung her head, looking despondent, but by familiarity Meng Shutang instantly recognized her as Bai Cixian.

Just moments ago her face still bore a hint of softness, now it had grown a little cold.

Her grandmother was ill, and she herself was also sick.

She was afraid he was busy and couldn't bring herself to call him.

And he, surprisingly, was staying with Bai Cixian.

Meng Shutang felt a swirl of emotions, unsure whether to be grateful that she had chosen a compassionate, gentle man or a fickle, two‑sided one.

She felt a bit unsteady on her feet.

Gu Jin Xing, standing nearby, saw this, calmly moved closer and steadied her with one hand, "Are you alright?"

Meng Shutang's expression was faintly troubled, "I'm fine."

Bai Cixian saw Gu Yunci approaching and was delighted; as she got up, she inadvertently caught sight of a mirror.

When she realized the worst of her injuries were on her face, she collapsed emotionally.

She fell and banged herself in the ward, crying hoarsely, feeling the whole world had grown dim.

But the moment she lifted her gaze and saw Meng Shutang wobble, she suddenly felt the world brighten again.

Even if she had been in a car accident, even if her face was ruined, she was still Meng Shutang's greatest threat.

Gu Yunci still set aside his work, left them, and cared for her.

She lowered her brows slightly, her voice trembling softly, "Brother Yunci, thank you for even going out of your way to come here…"

Gu Yunci didn't hear; when he saw Gu Jin Xing instinctively supporting Meng Shutang, his brows knit, burning with jealousy.

He set aside Bai Cixian and came over to Meng Shutang's side.

"Why did you all come here?"

Meng Shutang pursed her lips, remaining silent.

"Is this because you're afraid she'll meet you?"

Last night she was still thinking of going with him to Chengxi Bieshu, leaving everything behind for a world of just the two of them.

And today she saw this scene—how ironic.

Grandmother turned her head, glanced at Meng Shutang, and added, "My hypertension flared up; Tang Tang brought me here for a check‑up, and we happened to meet Jin Xing, so we're together."

While saying that, Grandmother looked at Bai Cixian a short distance away and asked, "What's wrong with her?"

Gu Yunci looked at Meng Shutang and said frankly, "Last night I had just left, and on Zifu Road I ran into Bai Cixian. She was in a serious car accident, and I rescued her."

Seemingly to emphasize, he added, "But I swear, when I saved her, I didn't know it was her."

Grandmother was about to say something, but Meng Shutang stopped her, "Grandmother, go home and rest, lest your blood pressure rises again."

Meng Shutang supported Grandmother as she turned to leave; Gu Yunci grabbed her wrist, and she twisted free.

Gu Yunci stood there, watching the slender backs of the old and the young recede farther away.

Bai Cixian, seated in a wheelchair, gave a light cough and softly called, "Brother Yunci, we should go for the check‑up."

The man stood there, still unmoving.

Gu Jin Xing walked over and patted his shoulder, "It's fine, I'm here."

After speaking, he jogged away and returned to Meng Shutang's side.

Gu Yunci stood for a while longer, then returned to the nearby chair and sat down, reaching out to pull Bai Cixian over, "Now, you can say who helped your Meng family, right?"

Bai Cixian cooed, "I don't know."

The man stood to leave, and she reached out and grabbed him, "I didn't deceive you, I really don't know."

"I've only seen that man once, I don't know who he is; the account he gave us for transferring money… is overseas."

Meng Shutang went back outside, helped Grandmother into the car, and turned her head to glance this way.

She happened to see the scene of Bai Cixian reaching out to pull Gu Yunci.

Having just caught them together, her heart felt as if it were being torn apart.

But at this moment, she was much more composed.

Meng Shutang's subtle yet complete emotional shift was fully reflected in Gu Jin Xing's eyes as he opened the Bentley's door behind her.

He knew very well that the fervor and pain Meng Shutang felt anew for Gu Yunci had been ground down to almost nothing.
