Chapter 4

~7 min read 1,327 words

"You all go out first; I'm going to give the patient a comprehensive physical examination," Su Yichen ordered in a serious tone.

"Yes."

The nurses retreated, and only Su Yichen and Shi Yi remained in the ward.

Su Yichen took a deep breath and walked to Shi Yi's bed.

Shi Yi was still in a coma. Su Yichen gently pulled her arm, and he saw that her fair skin was covered with dense, purplish-blue bruises, as if they had been pinched, especially on the inner wrists, which were hard to notice, where there were even more shocking ones.

Su Yichen's heart twisted into a ball; the flesh on the inside of a person's arm is the most tender, and he didn't know how much pain she must have been in when she was tortured like this by others.

Next, Su Yichen turned Shi Yi over and lifted her top, only to see that her back was also covered with terrifying scars.

These scars were a mix of new and old, looking deeper and even more shocking; they must have been caused by a whip.

His gaze followed the scars on her back downward and landed on a long scar on her lower back. This scar looked different from the others; it didn't look like it was caused by a whip, but rather like... a knife wound?

Su Yichen was just about to reach out to touch it when, at that moment, the body on the hospital bed trembled, and Shi Yi woke up with a start.

"What are you doing?!"

Shi Yi pulled the quilt over herself, wrapping her body tightly, and curled into a ball. Her amber eyes were filled with terror, like a frightened little beast.

"Xiao Yi, don't be afraid, it's me... Su Yichen."

"It's you? What are you doing here?"

Seeing the white coat Su Yichen was wearing, Shi Yi finally reacted slowly; this wasn't prison, but a hospital.

"I am your attending physician. Just now... I was examining your body, don't misunderstand. You just fainted due to gastrointestinal bleeding caused by a seafood allergy and were sent to our hospital for emergency treatment, but don't worry, I have already given you medication to treat the allergy."

Shi Yi's complexion sank bit by bit.

"I'm fine now, please get out."

"Xiao Yi... we, we haven't seen each other for five years, I miss you very much!" Su Yichen said with a pained heart. "I know you've suffered a lot inside these past five years, and I feel very sorry for you. This time, now that you're out, I will make it up to you properly..."

Shi Yi sneered in her heart. What would he use to make it up to her? A healthy body, or the most beautiful years of her youth?

From the moment Su Yichen betrayed her, she could never forgive him, let alone accept any of his bullshit compensation.

Looking at the "Director Physician" name tag hanging on Su Yichen's white coat, Shi Yi felt even more heartbroken.

So, he was already a Director Physician...

Back then, she had clearly been admitted to the medical department of Qinglan University together with Su Yichen, and the two had promised to become angels in white together, saving lives and healing the wounded.

Now, he had achieved his wish and become a doctor, while she... had become a convict with no future.

"Don't call me Xiao Yi anymore, call me by my name. Also, I'm tired. You go, and close the door."

Shi Yi didn't want to look at Su Yichen for another second, so she lay on the bed and turned her head away.

Watching Shi Yi's exhausted figure and her body full of scars, Su Yichen only felt a pain in his heart that made it impossible to breathe, but he knew that if he stayed here any longer, it would only make her more annoyed. He needed some time to knock on the door of Shi Yi's heart once again.

"Xiao Yi, get some good rest, I will come to see you again."

After Su Yichen finished speaking, he walked out reluctantly.

The next day, Shi Yi handled her own discharge procedures. Her body hadn't fully recovered, but hospitalization cost money, and she had no money.

"Miss, may I ask if you need help?"

A young nurse saw Shi Yi moving through the lobby alone, seemingly having just finished her discharge procedures. Her figure was thin, her footsteps were unsteady, and her forehead was covered in sweat, so she kindly walked over to support her.

"Thank you."

Shi Yi managed a smile at the corner of her mouth and didn't refuse.

"You're welcome, I'll see you to the door."

The young nurse carefully saw Shi Yi to the hospital entrance before turning to leave. Just as she turned to leave, a piece of paper fell out from her bosom.

Shi Yi bent down to pick it up and saw the words "Medical Team to Sozali, Recruiting Medical Personnel" written on it.

Medical Team to Sozali?

Shi Yi remembered that the Sozali Republic was the poorest and most backward country in the Southern Hemisphere, with a chaotic political situation, years of war, and recently, a deadly infectious virus had broken out, spreading at a rapid speed.

Shi Yi thought that as a major power in the United Nations, China organizing a "Medical Team to Sozali" at this time must be to rush to the front lines to help the Sozali Republic fight this virus.

She glanced briefly at the recruitment conditions on it, then folded the paper and put it in her pocket.

The sky was gray and overcast, and it was about to rain.

Shi Yi quickened her pace. Just then, a white sports car stopped in front of her with a screech.

Before Shi Yi could react, a strong man stepped out of the car, grabbed her hands, and forcefully pressed her against the car.

"What are you doing?!" Shi Yi struggled desperately.

"You are Shi Yi?"

Just then, a cold voice full of pressure came from not far away.

Shi Yi looked up and saw a man dressed in black, wearing black long boots, but with silver medium-long hair neatly combed back. His features were deep, as if carved by a knife and axe, and his eyes were as sharp as a hawk's.

Shi Yi recognized him at a glance—Chu Yehan.

When the incident with Miss Chu happened back then, Chu Yehan was abroad and hadn't returned. By the time he rushed back from abroad, Shi Yi had already been sent to prison by the Shi family, so the two had never officially met.

However, Shi Yi couldn't forget his voice—the voice that came over the phone from the lead surgeon when she was forcibly sent to a small clinic to have her kidney removed was this very voice.

"I'm asking you, why aren't you talking?!"

Chu Yehan stood high above Shi Yi, reached out a hand, and gripped her chin fiercely, forcing her to look up.

"I... am." Shi Yi said with difficulty.

"Heh, stop giving me that pitiful look, you mur-der-er!"

Chu Yehan snorted coldly and ordered his bodyguard, "Take her away."

The night gradually deepened, and the white sports car drove all the way north.

Chu Yehan lit a cigarette and sat in the passenger seat, looking at the night outside the window, not knowing what he was thinking. Shi Yi's lungs were already not good, and she was choked by the smell of smoke, coughing repeatedly.

An hour later, the car stopped in front of a cemetery.

It began to drizzle outside.

Chu Yehan got out of the car alone, holding a black umbrella, while Shi Yi was escorted out of the car by the bodyguard. The three of them arrived in front of a white marble tombstone.

Chu Yehan slowly exhaled a puff of blue smoke and coldly spat out two words.

"Kneel."
