Chapter 106

~8 min read 1,519 words

The World Tree, after each tremendous roar, then grew upward, looking even more tall and straight.

If the gods were here, they would surely be astonished; this World Tree is even larger.

But the Red-clothed Devil didn't care about that; he knew the World Tree's roots were desperately resisting the Poison Dragon Nidhogg and the poisonous snakes gnawing at the roots, waiting for the moment the roots would be bitten through again.

What would happen then? The Red-clothed Devil thought, the gods were no longer whole, the Poison River Wan had lost its toxicity in Li State, merchant ships on the river came and went, and only they were not bound by the barrier.

The Red-clothed Devil gazed at the World Tree, then raised both hands, holding a stone etched with runes, and muttered words.

Snakes gnawing at the roots,

Why are you poisonous?

As the poison dragon gnaws at the roots,

You will see the light again.

You will escape hell,

You will gain freedom!

The Red-clothed Devil muttered words, and with his voice, black mist slowly surrounded his laboratory...

"It seems this is truly something from the Mist Country? That box is probably just a blind; as for the old king's death, it was likely just an accidental fire." The Red-clothed Devil laughed, analyzed the situation, although although it was an accidental fire, it also felt wrong.

As the Red-clothed Devil's voice fell, the World Tree again began to grow violently, its roots fiercely took hold in the ground, emitting a violent sound. And those who had just thought they escaped disaster once again smiled, while the two people were in panic.

But this time, no major problem occurred; they waited for the ground's tremor to pass, only to find nothing serious. This let them breathe a sigh of relief, and they thought there was no major problem anymore.

Because the Red-clothed Devil had arrived, they felt reassured. Seeing the Red-clothed Devil no longer in red robes, he slowly approached, walking toward the World Tree, looking at the white wax tree desperately resisting, then he asked: "What use is this? No matter what, you cannot escape this fate, so accept early your fate of being gnawed by poisonous snakes. This way, we'll both be better off. Right, World Tree?"

The Red-clothed Devil's words seemed to further stimulate the World Tree's will to survive; it struggled even harder, accompanied by a rumbling sound, but soon its leaves began to wither, losing vitality. Although it still stood in the palace, it seemed it would fall any second.

"I feel pity for you, truly, Odin; your plan, or your title as the Question‑Answering Prophet, is probably about to end!" The Red-clothed Devil laughed, laughing toward the sky, which seemed like mockery and also like a declaration of war.

Odin was in the air, he saw the World Tree wither again, he realized this battle was unavoidable, his Eternal Spear gleamed, aiming at the Red-clothed Devil, but the next second, only a bang was heard, and even the space in the air shattered!

"Bang!"

At that moment everyone stopped fighting, looked up at the sky, only to see the sky seemed like a layer of glass, and this glass had now shattered, rapidly falling toward the ground! Everyone was extremely astonished, staring at the sky, dumbfounded.

Everyone looked up at the sky together!

"What is that?" Lin Xiyan asked, looking at the fragments in the sky, but she didn't linger; instead she found a sheltering eave, only to hear a crack, something like a scale fell to the ground with a huge roar, then the remaining fragments rained down, and for a moment the shattering sounds came one after another......

The two knew they couldn't move forward like this, but having no choice, they stayed put. Lin Xiyan remembered stamping her foot, but seeing the sky full of "glass shards"-like things, she could only wait honestly, she sighed and said: "Ah, this thing really is a bit infuriating."

Yang Xin rushed along the road, then maybe he was secretly glancing at Wang Tingwan with his eyes, feeling a bit afraid. He began to fear that Feng Yan would really take her away; but the answer was on Wang Tingwan's face, which Yang Xin had guessed, yet now he felt this premonition would come true.

Wang Tingwan followed behind Yang Xin, silent, her gaze full of contempt, even saying she already looked down on Yang Xin. She began to feel nauseous, the feeling growing stronger; those days she shut herself in the room, also thinking about something.

The glass-like shards in the sky simultaneously blocked their path; at that moment, Yang Xin suddenly spoke: "How do you see me? Nowadays, or perhaps before?"

Wang Tingwan was initially lost in thought, but was directly pulled back by Yang Xin's words; she replied: "Um, how should I put this? Should I say you are unscrupulous? Or cold-hearted and ruthless? Or heartless and unjust?"

After such a counterquestion, Yang Xin fell silent, unable to answer, yet this was also his choice, which he felt was worthwhile. But he never imagined how great a Upon-Sea this matter was for Feng Yan—it was like a sharp dagger piercing straight into the red heart.

Wang Tingwan raised her head and gazed at the hazy gray sky—was it night? By then it was already dawn; the ground was littered with fragments. She was about to say something, but after glancing at Yang Xin, she ultimately said nothing.

She sighed and stood with Yang Xin under the eaves.

Feng Yan and Chen Hao arrived at the main hall of Wanggong, where the soldiers had already surrounded them, yet none stepped forward, only a stalemate ensued. Feng Yan eyed the soldiers, his hand gripping the Black Sword, ready to attack at any moment, while Chen Hao merely smiled at the soldiers and then scattered a handful of gold coins from his hand.

The gold coins scattered in the air, catching the candlelight and emitting a golden glow; strangely, they remained motionless. This made Chen Hao feel a bit embarrassed, yet they neither attacked nor retreated, as if waiting for something—but what, exactly?

"Really, this is no fun now," Chen Hao turned his head and said to Feng Yan.

But Feng Yan laughed and replied: "You can't possibly keep letting you succeed, can you?"

"Exactly!" Chen Hao chuckled, then looked at the soldiers, who still kept their original distance, while Feng Yan directly tossed his Black Sword into the air; the soldiers' expressions instantly turned excited, and they charged at the two, weapons in hand.

"He has no weapon!" one soldier shouted.

"Charge! Get the reward money!" another soldier shouted.

The soldiers brandished their spears and surged toward Feng Yan, but Feng Yan remained calm, a smug smile curling his lips, then said: "Foolish!"

"Ah!" a soldier screamed, then was directly pierced through the body by the Black Sword!

"What! How is that possible!" the remaining soldiers stared in disbelief, one of them saying:

"Then now is the time for your lives to end!" Feng Yuan shouted, and the Black Sword returned to his hand.

"No!" the soldiers shouted in unison, but how could Feng Yan give them a chance? They turned and fled, but how could they outrun an adventurer? They dared not look back, yet Feng Yan appeared before their eyes, and once again he flung the Black Sword.

"Ah!"

With a puff, the soldiers' bodies were pierced one by one by the Black Sword, collapsing to the ground as blood flowed everywhere; they struggled unwillingly, but they realized they could not survive today, so they crawled with all their strength toward where Chen Hao had scattered the gold coins......

The soldiers' bloody trails left red marks as they crawled, the scene extremely bloody; Chen Hao asked Feng Yan: "Are you playing a bit too much?"

Feng Yan turned his head, saying nothing.

Also at that moment, the Wanggongdameng opened, the king clapped for the two, then said: "Everyone, you came quite early, and you even put on a decent show for me."

The two looked at the soldiers on the ground, barely clinging to life, and the corpses that were still warm despite being dead; the bloodstains on the ground slowly coagulated, turning dark red.

"A play?" Chen Hao didn't understand, but seeing the soldiers on the ground clinging to life, he realized, his heart instantly flared, and he couldn't help shouting at the king: "Bastard! You call this a play? You really are a bastard! Besides bastard, I can't find any other word to curse you! Do you think you're royal? Or the supreme authority? In my eyes, you're just a bastard thing!"

"Then please go die!" the king said, not angry but smiling.

"Too bad, you have no chance." Feng Yan said in a low voice, his face grim.

"Who says yes? Or who says no?" the king laughed, not dodging.

"Then goodbye!" Feng Yan shouted, swinging the Black Sword and directly chopping toward the king's head.

"Whoosh" an arrow tore through the air toward Feng Yan.
