Chapter 130: The Distance
The reason the children don't want to go back is precisely because of their parents!
Feng Yan thought of this, and an idea sprouted in his mind.
He wants to use his identity and then spare no effort to destroy some things! Even if it's extremely difficult, the road is full of thorns, everywhere danger, a hellish road filled with death, he still wants to charge through!
"Let's go!" Feng Yan said to the children before him.
"Good!" the children shouted, surrounding Feng Yan, celebrating their victory.
"Brother, it's not that we don't want to go home, but we really can't go back..." Suddenly, a child who usually doesn't speak spoke up, making all the children turn to look at him.
"How? Any more secrets?" Feng Yan instantly became alert, secretly feeling the matter was growing darker.
"We were sent by our parents, but they hardly inquired about what happened inside; they only came when sending us a change of clothes, and then we had to put on an act with the adults there." Seeing Feng Yan's solemn expression, the child could only reveal some of those secrets.
Although Feng Yan doubted the truth of it, he recalled what happened in that courtyard, the corpses inside the palace, and the candlesticks made from human corpses—none of which failed to stir his heart.
It seemed a voice in his heart kept calling him, urging him to quickly uncover the truth, to tear apart the beautiful façades of certain matters and reveal their true nature.
"Perhaps this is what I need to do." Feng Yan whispered, as if answering the children's words, or more like giving himself an explanation.
"Is this cultivation?" Feng Yan asked himself from the heart, but the question had no answer.
Feng Yan led the children to the palace gate again; this time the soldiers didn't stop him but instead performed salutes, awaiting his arrival.
This made Feng Yan feel strange; not understanding, he looked around with his eyes, sensing someone lurking in the dark, plotting some unknown scheme.
The royal buildings are always luxurious and high-grade; the golden bricks and jade tiles, under sunlight, reflect dazzling light that ordinary people cannot stare at, forcing them to shield their eyes and only open their mouths to praise the royal grandeur, thereby ignoring the filthy things, because we can't see them, we don't speak of them.
If the dazzling light suddenly vanished, they would also turn away, pretending not to have seen, and continue praising everything, because this has become their job.
They have already knelt beneath tyranny, becoming nothing but a dog that only barks.
As Feng Yan walked, he gazed at the royal buildings, and a thought suddenly sprang to mind; looking at the surrounding soldiers, a flood of ineffable thoughts surged, leaving him feeling utterly confused, his head almost splitting, while on the other hand he wondered whether the girl in the palace had already awakened.
Feng Yan forced himself to calm down, then watched the king walk toward him; his heart hung in suspense, fearing the king would say something like "I've done my best," which would mean the girl could never wake again and his promise to the boy could not be fulfilled.
The king stepped forward to face Feng Yan, wearing a smile, enduring the utmost humility, then used respectful language to make a request, speaking sincerely: "Although for you this is merely a stop on your journey, please stay here a while so we may properly attend to you!"
"Then, how is she now? I came here precisely for this matter, not to watch you fawn over me like a lapdog—isn't treating this illness something you should be doing?"
The king heard Feng Yan's icy voice in his ear, while breaking out in a cold sweat behind him; whether to bring Feng Yan to see that girl is a question, and for the king it is a Philadelphia deadly problem.
"This......"
The king realized he couldn't answer, nor dared to lift his head to look at Feng Yan; the cold sweat on his back had already soaked his clothes, while the soldiers stayed on guard, nerves taut.
The atmosphere became extremely oppressive for a moment; the nearby ministers kept wanting to say something to ease it, but each time they saw Feng Yan's icy gaze, the words they wanted to say were swallowed back into their stomachs; facing Feng Yan were those ministers who had once seen him confront a rain of arrows, and they clearly knew how formidable he was.
They could only, together with the king, grope in prayer for the girl to wake; if she woke, all would still be said; if she didn't, they would just wait for the nation to be destroyed.
Let's hope a miracle appears......
All the ministers together harbored this phrase in their hearts, they and the king remained silent, waiting for a sound, a sound that could rescue them all together.
Feng Yan also felt strange—why wasn't anyone speaking? Yet he knew this eerie atmosphere existed because of him, and he felt odd that he possessed such great power, despite having done nothing, and in his heart he despised these people even more.
"Hmm!" Feng Yan cleared his throat.
The king and ministers together raised their heads, expecting Feng Yan to say something.
But the next second, there was again deathly silence; the ministers were like souls wandering between life and death, while the one judging them was precisely the boy standing before them.
In this world, everything is bound by kneeling; whether beautiful or ugly, all are bound by what are called rules; rules may be unfair, yet they protect you from harm, but when power exceeds rules, the so-called rules are merely a toy in the hands of the rulers.
Feng Yan felt weary; a group of people were like deaf-mutes, not uttering a sound—just as he was preparing to leave, a child's tender voice suddenly came from behind him.
"Brother!"
Feng Yan jerked his head back, seeing the girl he had faced before, dressed in red, looking very festive, her round, plump face made him smile; smiling, his nose suddenly soured, almost bringing tears.
One must face it, right?
Feng Yan thought so and walked toward the girl; as he did, everyone secretly wiped sweat from their foreheads, silently applauding the person's medicine.
Feng Yan arrived before the girl, facing her, momentarily unsure what to say; her complexion was flushed, showing that she had been well treated in the palace these days, yet Feng Yan saw her wavering gaze and knew she still had something to ask.
"Ask away; I know it's about your older brother's whereabouts." Feng Yan said calmly.
The girl nodded, lifted her head to look at Feng Yan, awaiting his answer.
Feng Yan couldn't bear it—how could he utter such an answer?
The girl before him was still so young; although she had received meticulous care in the palace, Feng Yan understood this was all for show, indicating his own attitude.
"Your brother is waiting for you in the distance. One day you will meet him." Feng Yan told her this, but it only made the girl more anxious.
Tears streamed from the girl's eyes; anxiously she loudly questioned Feng Yan, saying, "Is my brother dead?"
"He hasn't died; he merely changed his way of living."
"Where does he live, and will anyone still whip my brother with a whip?" the girl asked again, wiping her tears, her reddened eyes looking at Feng Yan.
Everyone saw Feng Yan crouch, extend his right hand, then with his left hand take the girl's right hand and place it in his palm.
"What is this?" the girl asked, even more puzzled.
"Close your eyes." Feng Yan's words carried a tone of command.
The girl complied, closing her eyes.
"For now you still can't open them." Feng Yan said again.
Although the girl felt strange, she still followed Feng Yan's request, not opening her eyes; slowly, warmth spread to her palm.
The girl didn't realize that what was now in her hand was not Feng Yan's palm but a roughly shaped warmer.
"All right, open your eyes." Feng Yan said in an extremely gentle tone.
The girl opened her eyes and saw the charcoal-black warmer in her hand; though rough, it still warmed her heart.
"This is what your brother left for you; he said you would surely like it, your brother waits for you in the distance, this place you cannot find, but one day we will all go there." Feng Yan looked at the girl, his voice somewhat choked as he spoke.
"I understand." The girl instead became especially calm, bidding farewell to Feng Yan, saying, "Then please rest first, sir."
Having said that, the girl slowly walked away with her warmer; the ministers watched her retreating back, the stone in their hearts also fell, although they didn't know how the girl had awakened, they would not quibble over the outcome.
After all, once a person awakens, there's no need to fear being wiped out by this calamitous star before them.
"Alright, tell me what's going on." Feng Yan spoke, bringing everyone back to the subject.
The king hurried forward a step and said, "Since the girl has already awakened, can she now do something for our country?"
"What is it?" Feng Yan asked, while a suspicion rose in his mind—this old ghost might have some wicked idea.
"Please, sir, reforge our nation's treasure!"
"What!" Feng Yan widened his eyes and shouted.
Chen Hao had been wandering around Power State City; after seeing Wang Tingwan and Yang Xin, he kept following them, but in the end he still couldn't keep up—just then, Jin Meng appeared.
