Chapter 15

~3 min read 529 words

"Yes, the survival conditions for the fox clan are far too harsh. Their territory was already small to begin with, and most of the land has been occupied by the Black Fox clan. What is left for the other tribes is remote and barren ground. The Black Foxes force every fox-tribe to worship a dark, sinister god. The Grey Fox clan is hardly any better off than we are."

At this point, she paused and said, "Every god wishes for more believers. If we can bring more followers to the great Lord of Flames, we shall receive greater favour in return!"

The fox maiden Sister Qing Ling nodded, then set her steps walking toward a patch of land that had been marked off.

"Holy Maiden, have you found the God-Blessed Object?"

The fox-tribe chieftain asked.

The fox maiden Sister Qing Ling said softly, "Yes, Mother. These are the God-Blessed Seeds granted by the gods to our fox folk. From now on, none of our clansmen will ever have to go hungry again."

While speaking, she had already reached the field that had been turned into ridge after ridge of furrows. She took an oval-shaped fruit from her basket, cut it in two with a knife, and then buried both halves into the soil.

The fox-tribe chieftain watched Sister Qing Ling with curiosity, not knowing what she was doing.

Although the Continent of Gods was vast in territory and populous in both people and deities, its technology was not advanced.

This was only to be expected — where magic flourished, technology often failed to keep pace. Besides, neither humans nor gods had any interest in developing technology.

For those who possessed great power, becoming a god was what mattered most.

For the gods, expanding their believers, strengthening their divine might, and building their divine realm more firmly — that was what mattered most!

Therefore, the Continent of Gods did not have many varieties of grain; rice and wheat were still the staples.

Because they enjoyed the favour of the gods, many kingdoms had favourable weather, with all four seasons suited to the growing of grain.

On top of that, the Church would from time to time dispatch dedicated mages to use magic to eliminate pests from the growing crops over large areas, and even use magic to hasten their growth directly. Thus the grain yield on the Continent of Gods was extremely high.

The gods in the heavens all understood clearly that the number of believers was the key to their own strength.

And believers came from a larger population.

That required guaranteeing the supply of grain.

Without sufficient grain, any growth in population was out of the question.

Nevertheless, as the populations of the various nations grew, grain remained in short supply — demand outstripping supply.

For humans, the situation was still somewhat better.

For beastmen living on the fringes of the continent, many beastman tribes often went hungry.

And Sister Qing Ling had received a revelation from the "Lord of Flames," and had personally gone into the forest, where after searching for half a day, she finally found the "God-Blessed Object."

It was, in fact, a few potatoes!
