Chapter 6: Dragon Slayer Mage
Ignoring the brawl between Ma Kaou and Wakaba, Mo En greeted his companions and walked to the back of the guild hall, a large open area reserved specifically for mages to practice magic.
“Crack!”
On the open ground, lightning flashed and thunder roared, wild magic surging as a tall, muscular figure stood amid the furious storm of electricity.
“It’s Laxus.”
Seeing the figure amidst the lightning, Mo En felt no sense of unfamiliarity—it was his older brother, Laxus, with whom he had just left in a bitter argument at home.
Laxus’s magic was also “Dragon Slayer Magic,” specifically “Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic,” derived from the “Dragon Slayer Magic Crystal” implanted within his body, not learned from any dragon.
The “Dragon Slayer Magic Crystal” was exceedingly rare, a treasure impossible to seek out deliberately, and implanting it into one’s body was an extremely dangerous act.
Laxus risked implanting the “Dragon Slayer Magic Crystal” because his weak body could not withstand the immense magic inherited from Makarov, leaving him perpetually frail; though the implant was a desperate gamble, it was unavoidable—and fortunately, it succeeded, or else Grandpa Makarov would have spent his life in regret.
The events surrounding Laxus proved that having too great a magical talent was not always a blessing, for one’s body might not endure it, leading to dire consequences—after all, not everyone could implant a “Dragon Slayer Magic Crystal” to enhance their physical condition like Laxus did.
Laxus’s current miserable personality was deeply intertwined with this very incident.
The “Dragon Slayer Magic Crystal” that altered Laxus’s fate had been purchased at great cost by his father, Ivan Dreyar, yet Ivan Dreyar was expelled from Fairy Tail.
This left Laxus baffled and deeply resentful, for Grandpa Makarov had offered no convincing reason.
In truth, Mo En himself did not fully understand it either; though in his memory, Ivan Dreyar had never seemed like a good man, outright expelling him under the accusation of “endangering guild security” felt forced—perhaps something they didn’t know had occurred.
“Zzzzt!”
The lightning subsided, and Laxus turned his head toward Mo En.
“Mo En, I heard Itachi defeated someone who uses Dragon Slayer Magic?”
To Mo En’s surprise, Laxus spoke to him voluntarily—his rebellious teenage brother had always avoided conversation, immersed in his own world, as if determined to oppose the entire planet, a trait fitting for a moody, middle-school-style delinquent.
“It’s not… how did Itachi all find out? It’s not exactly a big deal, is it?”
Mo En was startled—beating up Natsu was nothing, so why was everyone paying attention? Did Natsu have some kind of protagonist aura?
“How did he get his Dragon Slayer Magic?”
Laxus ignored Mo En’s question and pressed on, his focus fixed on this point: Natsu was the first Dragon Slayer Mage he had ever encountered.
When Natsu joined Fairy Tail, Laxus had been away on a mission—he had never met Natsu until now.
“He says his father taught him.”
Mo En replied calmly.
“Huh?”
Laxus looked stunned, as if his mind had momentarily stalled—he wondered if Dragon Slayer Magic could be passed down through family lines.
“He says his father was a fire dragon.”
Mo En continued, and his words left Laxus utterly speechless.
“Fire… dragon?”
Laxus hesitated, his fierce face now wearing a dazed, almost foolish expression, as if seriously contemplating the possibility.
“There are two possibilities: either he’s mentally impaired, or he truly grew up raised by a fire dragon who taught him Dragon Slayer Magic—which do Itachi think is more plausible?”
Mo En rubbed his temples and asked Laxus, though upon reflection, the second possibility wasn’t entirely implausible.
Most importantly, Mo En found it hard to believe that Natsu—a mysterious orphan with no clear origins—could possess a “Dragon Slayer Magic Crystal.”
Such crystals were not easily obtained, and even if one were acquired, they would be treasured beyond measure; why would anyone give one to Natsu and let him roam the world like a wild beast?
“Do dragons… still exist?”
Laxus seemed lost in thought; though he had mastered Dragon Slayer Magic, he doubted whether dragons still existed in this age—at least, no one had ever seen one.
“It’d be fun if dragons really did exist. I heard they love hoarding treasure—if we could defeat a wicked dragon, wouldn’t we get rich? We’d never need to take another mission again!”
Mo En joked, grinning; he hadn’t watched the anime, so he didn’t know if dragons still lived—he was just teasing. But if real dragons did exist, he’d gladly become a dragon slayer himself.
He already had a cheat system—wasn’t a little courage to slay a dragon the least he could ask for?
“Hmph.”
Hearing Mo En’s words, Laxus snorted coldly, his expression turning distant, then he walked away without a word, as if suddenly realizing he’d let his tough facade slip.
“???”
Watching this, Mo En was utterly baffled—just moments ago they were chatting, and now Laxus had turned on him like a stranger. Had he said something wrong?
These problem children, these troubled youths—none of them were ever easy to deal with.
“Boom!”
“Thud!”
The moment Laxus turned to leave, a whirlwind of motion dashed forward and slammed straight into him.
This time, Laxus was prepared—he stood perfectly still, while the boy who collided with him tumbled to the ground.
Laxus’s towering frame completely overshadowed the child; he looked down and first saw a shock of pinkish hair.
“Natsu?! Itachi’re awake already?!”
Mo En leaned forward and recognized the boy immediately—it was Natsu, the “Fire Dragon” he had knocked out earlier.
The physical resilience granted by Dragon Slayer Magic was incredible—Natsu was already back to full energy.
“Oh? So Itachi’re the Dragon Slayer Mage Mo En defeated?”
Hearing Natsu’s name, Laxus narrowed his eyes, bent down, and glared menacingly at the dazed boy.
“Itachi’re such a pathetic weakling—Itachi’re a disgrace to Dragon Slayer Mages.”
Laxus looked disappointed; this guy looked like a fool, utterly unworthy of becoming a strong mage.
