Chapter 72: Separation
There is no scene of modern skyscrapers towering as imagined.
All around are old‑style residential buildings, the tallest no more than ten stories, and they look aged.
Both sides of the street host many shops, as well as tea houses, inns, pawnshops, and you can see all kinds of street vendors shouting continuously.
There are many people and many vehicles, and the noise blends into one clamor.
Jiang Cheng has a strange illusion that he seems to have returned to the 1990s before the crossing.
Chen Sao and the others in the car are already stunned.
Having grown up in the Poor District, even in a dream they have never seen such a scene, never seen so many people and vehicles.
"This isn't even the busiest place yet."
Bai Wei says, "Do you see those tallest buildings? Those few streets are the liveliest part of the Outer City District, with all kinds of things."
The few of them look over there.
The buildings there are more than two or three times the height of the surrounding houses.
Lin Yue stares dumbfounded.
If this place is so bustling, how bustling could that be? Chen Sao also widens her eyes, but quickly looks away.
They are only here to hide for a while, not to settle, so why worry so much? Moreover, this is an urban area, the cost of living must be high, let alone there.
Jiang Cheng feels no great turmoil inside.
He feels those spots should be similar to the commercial streets before his crossing; for Chen Sao and the others it's their first time seeing them, but he is already accustomed.
Besides, now is not the time to think about this.
The vehicle leaves the main road, turns into a two‑way lane, and the street instantly becomes much quieter; many passing pedestrians also have a sallow complexion.
"It seems the people of the Outer City District may not live as well as imagined,"
Jiang Cheng thinks to himself.
Only occasionally can one see uniformed guards passing by; the security must be far better than in the Poor District.
After a few minutes, the vehicle enters an Old‑style Residential Complex and stops in front of a building at the Northeast Corner.
"This is the place,"
Bai Wei unfastens her seatbelt and smiles.
Jiang Cheng nods, also unfastens his seatbelt, gets out, and opens the door for the Old Man and Chen Sao in the back seat.
The three of them step down from the car, look up at the six‑story building before them, and feel a bit at a loss.
Is this the place they will live in next?
They carry their luggage, ascend the stairs to the third floor, and arrive at the house on the left.
Bai Wei pulls out a key and opens the door.
Jiang Cheng's eyes light up.
Although the building looks somewhat old, the interior facilities are fine: the living room has a sofa, a TV, and tiled flooring.
"I haven't lived here in a long time; it seems to have a certain scent,"
Bai Wei turns around and smiles at the three of them.
"Come in,"
The three look at Jiang Cheng, their eyes a little fearful.
When have they ever seen such a fine house that they dare not enter, fearing to soil the floor?
Seeing their cowering demeanor, Jiang Cheng feels very sympathetic.
"Come, Grandma, Chen Sao,"
He smiles, takes the Old Man's hand, and silently vows that someday he will let his family live in a house like this.
The few enter the house and, led by Bai Wei, tour the entire home.
Besides the living room, there are two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, with all facilities complete.
"There's a vegetable market outside the complex, plus other shops; you can go downstairs to buy later. Prices here are a bit cheaper than in the Poor District,"
Bai Wei says to Chen Sao.
"Thank you! Thank you! We…" Chen Sao's nervous words are cut off. "It's okay."
Bai Wei waves her hand, "This is what I agreed with Jiang Shidi, and the house is usually vacant, so it's fine for you to stay a while; it even brings more foot traffic. By the way, this is my phone number—if anything happens, just spend some money to have someone call this number. Here's the main door key; remember not to lose it."
She hands a business card and the key to Chen Sao.
"Miss, you're too kind to us; we don't know how to repay you,"
The Old Man's tears flow emotionally.
"It's fine."
Bai Wei smiles and looks at Jiang Cheng, "Are you sure you don't want to stay here?"
Jiang Cheng shakes his head.
"Alright, you tell me when you're ready; I'll wait in the car. If you have any questions, you can ask later," Bai Wei finishes, smiles at the Old Man again, and walks out.
"Xiao Cheng, that girl is a good person," the Old Man sighs, "Such a fine house, they say let us live there and we live there."
"Sister Bai really is kind."
Jiang Cheng's gaze sweeps over the three, "Grandma, Chen Sao, Xiao Yue, for the upcoming period you'll stay here first; be sure to remember the house's location, don't get lost, and don't wander around. When the Wild Wolf Gang leaves, I'll take you back."
The three keep nodding.
"Xiao Cheng, are you really going back? Why not stay together until this period passes?" Chen Sao's eyes are full of worry.
"Yes, Jiang Cheng, you should stay too; I see there are two rooms here, enough to live in," Lin Yue adds.
Jiang Cheng smiles at her.
"I already said I have a High-level Membership Card from the Martial Arts Hall; nothing will happen."
Speaking, Jiang Cheng suddenly thought of something, looked at Chen Sao, "Chen Sao, how about this: I'll take you out for a while, buy some things, and let you get familiar with the surrounding environment."
"Alright."
Chen Sao quickly agreed.
She also worried that once Jiang Cheng and that person left, she would be left completely helpless.
"Grandma, Xiao Yue, stay at home and wait; unless we knock, don't open the door for anyone else."
"Hmm, don't worry, Jiang Cheng bro, I understand." Lin Yue nodded vigorously.
Having lived in the Poor District for a long time, she still remained vigilant.
Jiang Cheng took Chen Sao down to the ground floor; after informing Bai Wei, she gladly agreed, stepped out of the car, and while walking, introduced the surroundings to Chen Sao.
Chen Sao listened attentively, nodding from time to time.
After more than half an hour of buying basic supplies, it was time to part.
Jiang Cheng stood outside the door, watching the three inside, his eyes already reddening.
"Chen Sao, please take care of Grandma during this time."
"Xiao Cheng, what's the point of you saying that? Even if you didn't say it, sister‑in‑law would still take good care of Grandma for you."
"Jiang Cheng bro, don't worry, we'll definitely take good care of Grandma."
"Okay, Grandma, I'm leaving."
Jiang Cheng smiled and waved.
"Xiao Cheng, be careful on the way back! Don't get into fights; if you really have to, just take a small loss, understand?" the Old Man's tears streamed.
"Got it."
Jiang Cheng slowly closed the door and inhaled.
"Are you really going back?"
Bai Wei stood nearby, her eyes also a bit red.
"Hmm."
Jiang Cheng nodded without hesitation.
Having settled his family, he could now loosen his restraints a bit.
