Chapter 10

~6 min read 1,184 words

“You mean the Black Cat will come looking for Zhang Haiyan, and we can wait here like a farmer hoping for a rabbit to run into his stump and catch the Black Cat?”

Goudou Lao Gao’s eyes lit up at Nie Huaishang’s words, for the leader of the K2 organization was a figure of considerable weight.

Moreover, this organization has planted so many moles in China that it’s impossible to believe they have no designs on the country; you can’t guard against thieves forever when you’ve spent a thousand days stealing.

So eliminating the Black Cat is imperative.

Listening to Nie Huaishang’s plan, Goudou Lao Gao sensed this young man was far from ordinary—a recent high school graduate daring to lay a trap to kill the head of a terrorist organization.

And this plan was highly feasible; just uncovering K2’s moles in Donghai today was already remarkable.

And this was only the first day; before arriving, he had considered several possibilities—that they might be imprisoned, or that their fate might be unknown.

The one thing he never imagined was that they had achieved overwhelming success—and now, building on that victory, they were going to kill the Black Cat.

“So what exactly are we supposed to do next?”

Goudou Lao Gao wanted to test Nie Huaishang—he felt this young man would surely surprise him.

“We don’t know when the Black Cat will come to Donghai. I plan to join Guo Jing and the others as interns at Zhang Haiyan’s company to protect her safety.”

“We won’t announce it publicly, just inform the police that Zhang Haiyan is assisting them in arresting K2’s assassins?”

“Why? Do you suspect there’s a K2 mole in the police force?”

Goudou Lao Gao asked, puzzled.

“Better to believe it possible than to ignore it. Zhang Haiyan never suspected her secretary was a mole. Just give it a try—if the Black Cat really comes, the police must have someone planted by him.”

Nie Huaishang said calmly. Goudou Lao Gao didn’t object—just as he himself had never believed someone with Zhang Haiyan’s clean background and bright future could become a terrorist.

Long ago, K2 had already planted numerous moles. According to Zhang Haiyan’s account, Jiguanzi Mountain housed a K2 laboratory.

If K2 infiltrated and used the lab’s materials to launch a terrorist attack, Goudou Lao Gao couldn’t bear to imagine the consequences.

“I agree you should intern at Zhang Haiyan’s company, but be careful—the Black Cat is no ordinary man. His abilities are nothing like Yao’s secretary’s.”

Goudou Lao Gao warned.

Of course, Goudou Lao Gao didn’t fully trust the four of them—he specially assigned three Langya Special Forces personnel to accompany them to the company as interns.

When Zhang Haiyan saw Zhang Chu’an, she was stunned—he was far too familiar. Last time, her daughter had beaten him up, and to settle the matter quickly, she had given him an apartment.

Suddenly, she recalled Zhang Chu’an’s age and his earlier claim that he intended to apply to the National University of Defense Technology.

She looked at the four of them in disbelief: “You’re not students, are you?”

The four didn’t deny Zhang Haiyan’s question—each nodded. Seeing them nod, Zhang Haiyan was bewildered.

Are students today really this formidable? Facing assassins without flinching, eliminating them cleanly—and now planning to lie in wait to kill the Black Cat?

“Auntie, good to see you again.”

Zhang Chu’an gripped Zhang Haiyan’s hand eagerly. This Aunt Zhang was definitely a good person—generous to a fault.

“Yes, I didn’t expect us to meet again so soon.”

Zhang Haiyan said awkwardly.

“By the way, Aunt Zhang, we four are interning here—what’s our salary and benefits? Are meals and accommodation covered?”

Zhang Chu’an asked curiously.

Zhang Chu’an’s question left Zhang Haiyan stunned, but then she thought: these four were here to protect her life—might as well treat it as paying for her safety.

“Of course. Salary is one hundred thousand a month; meals and accommodation are fully covered by the company.”

Zhang Haiyan said politely.

Guo Jing quickly pulled Zhang Chu’an aside and said sternly: “What’s this? Got addicted to freeloading? We’re on a mission, not interning—you’re basically extorting her, you know that?”

“Aren’t we her interns? We don’t need salary or benefits, but she has to cover our living expenses—food, lodging, everything.”

Zhang Chu’an pleaded pitifully.

“Fine.”

Guo Jing agreed. After all, they were still students with little money and needed food and shelter.

Crucially, he knew Zhang Haiyan had once been a terrorist. If she were a clean-cut entrepreneur, Guo Jing would never have let Zhang Chu’an freeload like this.

Everyone had no objections to her covering their meals and lodging; Zhang Haiyan, this wealthy CEO, had even less objection.

After all, this amount meant nothing to her.

Of course, Zhang Haiyan didn’t mind—but Guo Jing and the others felt a bit embarrassed. In a five-star hotel, Zhang Chu’an devoured the entire table like a whirlwind.

Opposite him, Zhang Xiaofan’s face was flushed. For days now, Zhang Chu’an had ordered five-star meals, then ordered another full table to take back.

About five hundred per person. Since their appetites were large, seven people meant three thousand five hundred per meal—over ten thousand a day.

No one except Nie Huaishang had ever enjoyed such luxuries.

Of course, when Guo Jing saw their spending, his mood instantly soured.

Guo Jing: “Zhang Chu’an, explain why we spent over three hundred thousand on meals this month.”

Zhang Xiaofan: “It’s simple—he ordered dishes from five-star hotels.”

Zhang Chu’an: “Come on, we’re risking our lives to protect her safety—can’t we eat something decent? It’s not every day you get this chance.”

Nie Huaishang: “I originally thought this mission’s main goal was to kill the Black Cat. Whether Zhang Haiyan lived or died didn’t matter—she was once a K2 mole herself, and siding with us was out of necessity.”

Guo Jing: “But who knew this kid would order five-star meals for us and spend three hundred thousand?”

Zhang Chu’an: “So I won’t go to five-star hotels next time?”

Nie Huaishang: “Forget it. The money’s already spent. Let’s keep the five-star standard—we need to keep her alive.”

Zhang Xiaofan: “I need to buy something for my friends’ parents during this internship—like good camera gear for Xiao Zhuang. Let me make a list.”

Nie Huaishang: “Don’t worry about the cost—she’s a billionaire, this is nothing. I’ll make a list too—I need to bring something back for Erniu and the others.”

Guo Jing: “I want a better compound bow to practice my archery. Fine, I’ll make a list too. The money’s already spent—might as well spend a bit more. After all, we’re away—shouldn’t we bring something back for our parents and friends?”

Then the three sent their shopping lists to Zhang Chu’an’s phone. All were things they’d wanted for years but could never afford—the long lists made Zhang Chu’an dizzy.

Zhang Chu’an roughly calculated: each person would spend about fifty to sixty thousand. Suddenly, he added it up—shouldn’t I buy something too?

After finishing his own shopping list, Zhang Chu’an comforted himself: this is my first internship salary—not freeloading.
