Chapter 1044: Publishing a Mission, Heading to City F

~5 min read 907 words

Ever since discovering the zombies, Lin Yi had been like a child who'd found a new toy—he pressed himself against the window, teasing the zombies outside, watching them snarl and lunge yet never reach him, and laughed with pure delight.

"Pfft—hahahahaha, look at them, they're really so dumb."

Lin Yi pointed at the zombies, mocking them without a shred of mercy.

Facing Huo Jinglin, arms folded, glanced at him from the side and said unhurriedly, "Go ahead and laugh at them now. The moment you step off the car and one of them takes a bite, we'll see if you can still laugh."

At those words, Lin Yi choked on his laughter. He looked out at the zombies outside, each one with its mouth wide open, hideously ugly, shivered, hopped off the bed in a flash, and scurried over to Facing Huo Jinglin's side.

"I don't want to get bitten by them. They're way too ugly, and they even drool—eww~"

Lin Yi lifted his pinky finger in a delicate orchid-finger pose, held it by his mouth, and struck a look of utter disgust.

Listening to the two of them talk, and watching Lin Yi's exaggerated act, Gu Yanqi—who had still been afraid a moment ago—let out a "pfft" and burst out laughing.

One had to admit, Lin Yi really did have a gift for staying cheerful. No matter the situation, he could lift everyone's mood and help them relax.

Glancing at the zombies outside still staring in, Gu Yanqi pulled the curtain shut, covering the window up tight.

She got off the bed and went out to the living room, where she saw Ning Chen and Xiao Han discussing something.

Ning Chen spotted Gu Yanqi coming out and asked, a touch of concern in his voice, "Are you alright?"

The question made Gu Yanqi pause for a beat, then she realized Ning Chen was asking if she was still scared.

Gu Yanqi gave a soft smile and said, "I'm fine now, I'm not that scared anymore. By the way, the things outside—are they really zombies?"

Ning Chen nodded, then fiddled with the radio on the table for a moment.

This radio had just been scavenged by Xiao Han and Ning Chen from a house nearby.

"Huh? Where did that radio come from?"

Lin Yi came out of his room and spotted at once what Ning Chen was tinkering with.

Ning Chen didn't answer, but Xiao Han, smiling brightly, pointed at the house next door.

Lin Yi caught on at once, sucked in a sharp breath, and said, "Y-you-you—you went out?"

After seeing Xiao Han nod, Lin Yi's eyes nearly popped out of his head.

Xiao Han was a little puzzled. With his and Ning Chen's abilities, these zombies were no threat to them at all, so even going out was perfectly safe.

But Lin Yi didn't see it that way. He'd watched a few zombie movies before, and the zombies in them were fierce and terrifying—and one bite meant infection.

Thinking of that, Lin Yi hurried to Ning Chen's side and, without a word, tried to start pulling off Ning Chen's clothes.

Ning Chen stopped Lin Yi with one hand, looking at him in confusion.

Ning Chen was completely baffled—why had Lin Yi suddenly started trying to undress him? Had he missed something while tuning the radio?

Lin Yi, blocked as he was, refused to give up. He struggled and clawed at Ning Chen as he went.

"I tell you, Ning Chen, you two going out was really dangerous. Let me check if you're hurt."

Hearing Lin Yi's words, Ning Chen could only sigh, press Lin Yi down onto the sofa, and hold him still.

Lin Yi, pinned face-down, was on the verge of tears: "Hey hey hey, ow ow ow, Ning Chen, Brother Ning, Big Boss Ning, I was wrong, I was wrong!"

"Not hurt, don't worry." With that, Ning Chen let go of Lin Yi and went back to adjusting the radio's wiring.

Hearing Ning Chen's reply, Lin Yi stopped lunging at him—after all, if he were going to get infected, he would have been infected long ago, not waited until now.

"Szzz… fellow… fellow survivors…"

A voice came through the radio, and Ning Chen immediately began adjusting it, trying to stabilize the signal.

After all of Ning Chen's fiddling, the radio's sound finally steadied.

"Fellow survivors, we will be setting up a shelter in City F. Those who receive this message, please come. In order to ensure everyone's safety, szzz… we will inform everyone about this round of infected… szzz… some of the details."

"We have divided the infected into levels 1 through 5. The higher the level, the stronger they are. They have crystals on their foreheads—green, blue, yellow, purple, and red, respectively. You can use the crystals to tell the infected apart by level. We hope… szzz… everyone can… szzz"

Before the message finished, the radio let out a burst of static. Ning Chen turned it off—at the very least, they now knew a little about the state of this world.

Hearing the radio talk about distinguishing zombie levels, Lin Yi hurried back to Gu Yanqi's room, yanked open the curtain, and looked at the zombie outside.

On the zombie's forehead was a diamond-shaped crystal, and the crystal inside was green—meaning it was the most basic, level-one zombie.

Ning Chen looked at Xiao Han and said slowly, "So, where do we go?"
