Chapter 25: Misunderstanding
Ji Xiang did not know that Professor Mo and Commandant Wang were eyeing him covetously, and even if he did, he would not think much of it.
Waking up from a sleep, his Endurance Value had only recovered by 4 points.
It seemed that catching up on sleep during the day was not as good as deep sleep at night; Ji Xiang stretched a little and felt exhausted all over.
After getting up and taking a shower, Ji Xiang felt slightly more refreshed.
"Ji Xiang, the things your mother had someone send over are all in the living room." Ji Xiang's father heard the sound of him getting up, so he walked out and said to Ji Xiang.
He saw Ji Xiang's haggard face and paused for a moment.
When Ji Xiang returned at noon, he had been watching the one-minute K-line chart and hadn't paid attention. But just now, Ji Xiang's mother had called and asked him to keep an eye on things.
Ji Xiang's father's lips twitched, but he didn't speak, turning to help Ji Xiang move the things into his bedroom.
Just before leaving, Ji Xiang's father walked over and said, seemingly casually, "When you're young, you need to be moderate. Everything should have its limits; it won't be good if you damage your health."
"……"
Ji Xiang paused for a moment before he understood what the old man meant by using those words to lecture him.
I'm tired from performing surgery!
I'm really tired from performing surgery!!
Ji Xiang was screaming in his heart.
Unfortunately, the old man did not give Ji Xiang any chance to explain and turned to leave.
An explanation is just a cover-up; Ji Xiang sighed and didn't chase after the old man to clarify what had happened.
If he chased after him to explain the situation now, it would only make him look guilty.
He was tired like a dog, and now he was being misunderstood after coming home... no, dogs weren't as tired as he was, Ji Xiang scratched his head.
Opening the packaging, the things Ji Xiang wanted appeared before his eyes.
Ji Xiang casually opened a package of staplers and began to study them.
At the same time, Ji Xiang's father closed the bedroom door and returned to his study.
He lit a cigarette, looked at the red and green screen in front of him, and remained silent for a full minute before picking up his phone.
"Xiao Ying, Ji Xiang is really acting a bit strange." Ji Xiang's father said after the call connected.
"Is it very serious?"
"Very serious." Ji Xiang's father was somewhat solemn, "You know, Ji Xiang has always been the type of person full of energy since he was a child, just like me."
"Pah!"
"Seriously, be serious." Ji Xiang's father frowned, not dwelling on the details, "He went to the hospital for an exam today, and after he came back, he took a nap and slept until now. I just heard him get up to wash, and I took a look. Overall, he is just exhausted."
"He learned all the bad habits from you." Ji Xiang's mother scolded from the other side of the phone.
"It has nothing to do with me. I occasionally tell Ji Xiang a few things, but the child is grown up after all."
"Having a girlfriend is a good thing."
"No." Ji Xiang's father's expression became a few degrees more serious, "He comes home on time every day and doesn't have many phone calls; I don't think he has a girlfriend."
"Should we check his computer?"
"No." Ji Xiang's father firmly refused, "The child is grown up and should have his own privacy."
"Then I'll think about what to do." There was silence on the other side of the phone for 32 seconds, "I'll go ask around and see if the lab has any way."
"What are you going to say?"
"None of your business!"
"Fine, I'll try to communicate with Ji Xiang at dinner. Being hollowed out at such a young age is never good." Ji Xiang's father said.
"I always find it strange. Ji Xiang looks like a delicate scholar, but he's actually as strong as an ox. If it weren't for you refusing to agree, he would have joined the National Team long ago."
Ji Xiang's father shook his head, did not continue the conversation, and hung up the phone.
This kind of thing was truly hard to talk about; the child was already an adult, and saying too much or too little would be wrong. Ji Xiang's father felt like he was facing a world-class problem and kept frowning in deep thought.
Not until the cigarette burned his fingers did he silently extinguish it.
Ji Xiang did not know how much trouble he had caused his parents by exhausting his Basic Endurance Value while training for surgery in the System Space.
At this moment, he was hiding in his room, dismantling the stapler like a sniper.
Although it wasn't performing surgery, as a surgeon, the more familiar one is with the stapler, the more helpful it is for surgery.
Even if this help was minimal, Ji Xiang still "played" happily as if he were putting together Legos.
Just as the System NPC said, there were Experience Points to be gained from dismantling and assembling the stapler, though less than performing a surgery.
But it also consumed less Stamina.
Ji Xiang looked at his pitiful 4 points of Stamina and felt like crying without tears; he could only choose to "play" with the stapler in reality.
He gradually became familiar with the structure of the stapler and could soon assemble it with his eyes closed, becoming incredibly proficient.
The dismantling process also yielded Experience Points, but they were pitifully few.
At dinner, Ji Xiang saw his father wanting to speak but hesitating, and he himself didn't know how to explain.
So he didn't say anything.
The father and son finished dinner in silence. When Ji Xiang returned to his room to assemble the stapler, he suddenly thought of a few small ideas and prepared to try them out tomorrow.
……
The next morning, Ji Xiang got up for a morning run, and when he returned home, he saw an off-road vehicle parked in front of the house.
"Mr. Ji, this was sent by the young lady."
A man wearing a jacket and a baseball cap held a small box with both hands and handed it to Ji Xiang's father.
"Thank you."
The man bowed, turned, got into the car, and left without saying a single word of nonsense.
"Dad, what is this?" Ji Xiang asked.
Ji Xiang's father glanced at him, and seeing that Ji Xiang was full of energy, he felt slightly relieved. "This is a Life Sensor your mother ordered for you."
Opening the packaging, Ji Xiang picked up a watch-like object and looked at it. "Isn't this just an Apple Watch? What? Are you trying to scare me with a fancy name?"
"Put it on." Ji Xiang's father personally put the watch on Ji Xiang. "In the hospital, they treat women like men, and men like livestock."
"Even livestock aren't treated that way; it's normal for your mother to worry about your health. Although you are still young, some illnesses are hidden ailments left over from one's youth."
Ji Xiang didn't grasp the deeper meaning in his old man's words; it was just an Apple Watch, so he would wear it if he had to—it didn't matter.
After breakfast, Ji Xiang rode his bike to the Second Affiliated Hospital.
Mo Jiaoshou and Wang Daxiao had already notified the Department of Science and Education, and the first department Ji Xiang was to rotate through was the Urology Department.
After the staff at the Department of Science and Education finished arranging the personnel list, they let the Standardized Training Students enter the department on their own, and said a whole lot about needing to follow labor discipline and how the Department of Science and Education would conduct spot checks at irregular intervals.
Ji Xiang and two other students arrived at the Urology Department; the few of them were not familiar with each other, and they introduced themselves to one another along the way.
With three years of Standardized Residency Training, the group members were brought together by the power of fate just like members of a college dormitory; this was also a kind of destiny.
The other two came from two different colleges; there was a girl named Liu Yunqing, and a short, fat, sleazy-looking man named Lu Kai.
They weren't very familiar with each other, and Ji Xiang wasn't a chatterbox who got close to people instantly, so after getting to know each other, they arrived at the Urology Department in silence.
Two elevators opened at the same time, and three Doctors wearing White Uniforms with isolation gowns underneath stepped out of the elevator next door.
Their faces carried exhaustion and the unhealthy flush brought on by hormones after emergency resuscitation; one look and it was clear they had definitely been performing surgery all night.
"Keep an eye on the post-op," the leading doctor, who was over fifty, instructed.
"Director, I know," the young doctor behind him said. "I will keep an eye on it."
"Tell me, which Patient are you keeping an eye on?" The Director took off his mask; his beard was gray, but it didn't hide a trace of a mocking smile at the corner of his mouth.
Ji Xiang noticed this and felt curious, so he walked a few quick steps to follow behind them.
"The Patient who had a partial Kidney Resection," the young doctor immediately replied. "There is a possibility of bleeding post-op, and the risk is high. I am prepared to go on stage to stop the bleeding at any time."
The Director laughed and shook his head. "I've already made that very clear to the family members; there shouldn't be any problems. If something happens, we deal with it; if nothing happens, that's for the best. During the surgery, we already tried our best to preserve one Kidney for the Patient; if it really can't be saved, no one can do anything about it."
"Understood, Director."
"Understood?" The smile at the corner of the Urology Department Director's mouth deepened a little. "What you need to pay attention to are the Patients in the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department undergoing liver resection or liver repair."
"..."
The young doctor behind him paused; he clearly didn't understand what the Director meant.
The Urology Department Director didn't offer any further explanation and strode into the Doctor's Office.
There was a whirring sound in the office. Ji Xiang followed him in and stood in a corner, preparing to report to the Urology Department Director.
"Is this the juicer the Head Nurse just bought?" the Urology Department Director asked urgently.
"Director, it's done." The night shift Nurse was juicing, preparing to get some nutrition for herself after staying up all night. Seeing the Director return, she greeted him immediately.
"Give me a cup," the Urology Department Director said, then sat down on a chair. "That Patient must have a CT scan within 48 hours, a full abdominal one."
The doctor was puzzled and asked, "Director, wouldn't a CT of both Kidneys be enough?"
"A CT of both Kidneys must be done, but you must also check the liver in Hepatobiliary Surgery; do them together."
"Director, why does this Patient need special attention?" the young doctor asked.
Ji Xiang pricked up his ears.
The words the Urology Department Director was about to say were surely full of Clinical experience, and there might even be bloody lessons involved.
Listen, remember, and avoid taking detours yourself.
"What is the Patient's diagnosis?" the Urology Department Director asked.
"Right Kidney contusion; the CT shows the right Kidney's morphology is intact. When we opened the abdomen, you even went on stage to touch it and said there was nothing wrong." The more the young doctor spoke, the more confused he became.
"This is where your Clinical experience is lacking..."
"Director, here." The Nurse handed the fruit juice to the Director in a disposable paper cup.
The Urology Department Director took it in his hand and took a sip.
"Hmm? What the hell is this!"
Ji Xiang was pricking up his ears to listen to the Clinical experience the Urology Department Director was about to share, but suddenly heard him raise his voice and roar.
"It's apple juice," the Nurse said, puzzled.
"This..." The Urology Department Director steadied his hand and gave a bitter smile. "This is just a cup of freshly collected urine, it even has foam on it."
"Here, take it and compare it to a urine bag; it's exactly the same!"
"..."
"..."
The few of them were stunned.
Ji Xiang was also taken aback; he carefully recalled what the apple juice looked like just after being squeezed, and then he suddenly realized—it really did look very similar.
"Take it away, take it away. Move the juicer to your Nurse's Duty Room; don't let me see it." The Urology Department Director put the disposable paper cup on the table and waved his hand to direct the Nurse.
Working in the Urology Department, she had long since become immune to jokes about feces and urine. She didn't have the disgust or nausea of a normal girl; instead, she laughed and took the paper cup.
"Director, I have to say, your Clinical experience is rich. If you hadn't said anything, I would never have been able to tell it looked so similar."
"Go away." The Urology Department Director waved his hand in disgust. "I see enough of it every day; drinking this stuff is nauseating. Go, get me a bottle of sugar, the 5% kind."
After finishing, the Urology Department Director saw the three of them, Ji Xiang included, and asked, "Who are you..."
"Teacher, we are the new Standardized Training Students."
