Chapter 26: Having One's Kidney Stolen
"Oh?" The Muniu Waike Zhuren scanned the three Standardized Training Students reporting to the department with great interest, his gaze finally landing on Ji Xiang.
"You must be that Doctor Xiao Ji whom Professor Mo insisted on having, dead or alive."
Ji Xiang was tall and sturdy, standing out at a glance, and the Muniu Waike Zhuren picked him out from the three of them immediately.
"Director, I am Ji Xiang."
"Ji Xiang, auspicious, a good name." The Muniu Waike Zhuren laughed, took the 5% glucose the Nurse had brought over, took a sip, and stood up to walk straight out.
Ji Xiang was stunned.
He really wanted to grab this hateful guy who only said half of what he meant and ask what exactly it was that he had just been instructing the junior doctor about.
How truly hateful!
But the Muniu Waike Zhuren seemed to have completely forgotten that matter, swaggering out of the Doctor's Office.
"New doctors, huh." That young doctor greeted Ji Xiang and the other two, didn't even offer them a seat, and went back to his own work.
After finishing a surgery, there was still a mountain of work to do, and as for the half-finished sentence the Director had just spoken, he had forgotten it entirely.
It was just a Patient with a Ren Cuo Lie Shang, what was there to care about? It would heal on its own in a few days.
Ji Xiang stood in the corner of the Doctor's Office and thought for a moment, still curious in his heart; he held his breath, focused his mind, and entered the System Space.
"Teacher." Ji Xiang saw the System NPC hunched over, standing in the corridor of the operating room at a glance; it seemed he was always there, somewhat lonely.
"You've come."
"Teacher..."
Ji Xiang recounted the incident he had just encountered.
"The Muniu Waike Zhuren didn't say why one should pay attention to a Patient with a Ren Cuo Lie Shang; could you explain it to me?"
"Oh, is that so." The System NPC nodded. "Do you want to try Empathy?"
Ji Xiang had also thought of this, and he calculated the Surgical Points he had on hand.
He had already accumulated 42 Surgical Points, but he didn't know the price level of the System Mall.
Ji Xiang was curious, and with the System NPC asking proactively, he felt he should be able to gain something this time, so he nodded.
"You need to experience this kind of troublesome matter properly," the System NPC instructed. "As for how much you can learn, that depends on yourself."
From the System NPC's words, Ji Xiang felt it was different from the previous times he had used Empathy.
Where exactly was the difference?
Ji Xiang pondered, light and shadow flickering before his eyes; when things became clear, he was sitting in the waiting area outside the CT Room.
"Lin Li!"
A doctor shouted loudly at the office door.
"I'm here." Ji Xiang was still in spectator mode; the Patient he was possessing, named Lin Li, stood up and walked over.
"Have you had any trauma before?" the doctor in the CT Room asked.
"Doctor, I was in a car accident 3 years ago, and I had surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital in the Provincial Hospital."
"Oh, how was it back then?"
"They said it was a liver rupture, they removed... they removed..."
Lin Li was an ordinary person; he had a part of his liver removed back then, and the doctor at the Second Affiliated Hospital had told him, but he couldn't remember it at all, even though that lobe of liver was his own.
"Forgot what they removed?" the CT Room doctor asked.
"Yeah." The Patient nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"The injury was quite severe at the time; the right lobe of the liver was removed, and the right Kidney was also removed, considering..."
"Wait, Doctor." The Patient hurriedly interrupted after hearing the CT Room doctor's words.
In an instant, Ji Xiang vaguely sensed that something was about to happen.
The Patient didn't know about the fact that his right Kidney had been removed 3 years ago; after interrupting the CT Room doctor, he didn't know what to say for a moment.
"You... didn't know about the removal of your right Kidney?" The CT Room doctor looked at the Patient in confusion.
"I didn't know. I remember the doctor telling me at the time that there was some kind of contusion or something, and that it would heal with conservative treatment."
"Do you have the films?"
The Patient shook his head.
"Your right Kidney was removed," the CT Room doctor said very firmly. "Looking at the films now, there is simply no right Kidney."
A bolt of lightning descended from the sky; even Ji Xiang, who was just a spectator, was blasted into a daze.
They stole his Kidney!
To actually have one's Kidney stolen in a hospital, and not even know about it!!
Ji Xiang felt the fury in the Patient's chest rise up in a "whoosh."
It wasn't just the Patient; at this very moment, even Ji Xiang, who was watching, could not suppress the anger in his heart.
A Kidney was removed, and the Patient didn't even know—how did they act as a doctor?!
Ji Xiang did not believe that the Patient would forget about having a Kidney removed.
As long as the surgeon or the assistant explained such a major event to the Patient, they would never forget it for the rest of their life.
The Patient was bewildered and at a loss, which meant the doctor at the time really hadn't explained that a Kidney had been removed.
Emergency surgery, that was understandable; during the operation, the priority was stopping the bleeding, so removing any organ was normal.
But after coming off the table, they should have at least told the Patient or the Family Member!
That was a Kidney!
It was a Kidney!!
Damn it!
How could there be such a doctor!
Ji Xiang's sense of justice exploded from the bottom of his heart, and he thought indignantly.
"You, oh you." The CT Room Doctor clearly shared the same thoughts as Ji Xiang; he suppressed countless harsh words, but he could not suppress the sense of justice in his heart, trying his best to keep his tone level so as not to overly stimulate the Patient.
"The right kidney is gone. If I synthesize your surgical history, I suspect your right kidney was removed during your last surgery."
"But..."
The CT Room Doctor sighed and turned back to the office.
The Patient was somewhat unwilling to accept this and chased after him to ask.
"Doctor, is it... is it... is it really true? Don't mess with me." The Patient's voice was trembling as he spoke.
"Look here." The CT Room Doctor pointed at the film viewer, tapping it with a thudding sound.
"This is the left kidney, behind the spleen." The CT Room Doctor briefly explained to the Patient, pointing to the opposite side of the left kidney on the film, "A normal right kidney is here. Do you see the shadow of the right kidney?"
The Patient looked at the vastly different images on the film viewer; even if he did not understand imaging, he understood what had happened.
The right kidney,
had vanished into thin air!
His own kidney had been cut out!!
Countless golden stars rose before his eyes, and the Patient's body swayed, nearly falling. The CT Room Doctor reached out to steady him, and only then did he barely manage to stand firm.
The CT Room Doctor looked at the Patient with a pitiful gaze and sighed, "You should rest for a moment."
There was no way to say anything more; Ji Xiang habitually replaced himself with the CT Room Doctor's perspective and felt that nothing was good to say at this moment.
Telling the Patient that the right kidney had been removed was what he should do, it was a form of protection for himself, and even more so, it was being responsible to the Patient.
It was just that...
Ji Xiang clearly felt the sound of the raging fire burning in his chest.
The wildfire raged, devouring his reason, the sound of the burning devouring his reason, crackling and popping.
He must demand justice, he must!
Although he was a Standardized Training Doctor, this time Ji Xiang stood on the Patient's side.
Heaven's law is clear; how could they remove an important organ without telling the Patient himself?
And this was not Cancer; no matter from what angle one considered it, they had to tell the Patient!
What a heartless Doctor, what a heartless Surgeon!
This thought had already been set in Ji Xiang's heart.
The Patient staggered out of the CT Room and sat on the steps outside the main entrance for a long time.
A seed called hatred took root, sprouted, and grew rapidly.
Having one's kidney cut out—could there be any matter greater than this?!
Ji Xiang felt conflicted in his heart; he hoped someone would step forward to uphold justice, but he did not want the Patient to do something irreparable while emotionally agitated. Even though he knew he was in an Empathy illusion, he was still furious.
I do not know how much time passed, but the Patient became a bit more spirited.
He began to dial the hotline for friends and family.
"My kidney was cut out..."
"My kidney was cut out..."
"My kidney was cut out..."
No matter who it was, when they heard their friends or family say this in a sorrowful tone, they could not remain calm.
A group of people arrived at the hospital, and after getting the films from the CT Room Doctor at this hospital, they began to discuss it in a clamor.
Everyone believed that the kidney must have been cut out at the hospital where he had emergency rescue for a car accident three years ago.
Ji Xiang also believed this.
Even while in the bystander mode, Ji Xiang was still being scorched by the anger stirred up by his sense of justice.
He recalled a few incidents his teacher had mentioned during his internship.
The film of the previous surgery's patient had not been taken away, the Chief Surgeon came to confirm that one side of the kidney had an issue, and after removing it, they discovered they had cut the wrong one...
Such things occasionally happen in the industry, even if one demands verification and rigor, it still happens.
But a trauma, a Laparotomy, and they removed the right kidney without telling the Patient!
Is there still justice in the world?!
Is there still the rule of law?!
Not even speaking of medical ethics, this kind of behavior is simply insane!
Ji Xiang usually looked calm, but he was still young, had not been beaten and battered by society, and still had a sense of justice in his heart.
The more this was the case, the more he could not suppress the flames of anger.
"It must be that son of a bitch who cut your kidney out to sell for money! I've heard people say so."
"Right! Coming to the hospital to draw so much blood, I heard people say it's to be sent to the blood station to sell for money!"
"This is fucking daylight robbery, heartless!!!"
The Patient's friends and family roared and shouted in anger, filled with righteous indignation.
The incident happened suddenly, and after a brief discussion, the group decided to go and demand an explanation.
Soon, the group headed straight for the hospital where the surgery had been performed years ago.
After getting off the elevator in the inpatient department, the Patient took the lead; upon entering the office and seeing the people wearing White Uniforms, the anger in his heart erupted like a volcano.
He grabbed a computer screen and viciously smashed it toward a young Doctor sitting at the very front.
"Don't!" Ji Xiang panicked and wanted to stop him, but unfortunately, he had no control over this body and could only watch helplessly as fresh blood splattered everywhere.
A drop of blood splashed onto his eyelid, and the whole world turned red, filled with the smell of blood.
Although he knew this was just an "accident" within the Empathy system, Ji Xiang still wanted to take over control of the body to prevent the vicious incident from happening.
Every debt has its debtor, every grievance its author; it really has nothing to do with that young Doctor!
But with the scene before him filled with red and the smell of blood overflowing, the wildness deep within the gentle Ji Xiang seemed to be stirred up as well.
His blood pressure rose sharply, the light before his eyes flickered, and the next second Ji Xiang returned to the System Operating Room.
"Teacher..." Ji Xiang's voice was somewhat choked.
Having witnessed two tragedies with his own eyes, he could no longer remain calm.
Although he was no longer observing the Patient who had their kidney harvested from the perspective of a bystander, the anger in Ji Xiang's heart still remained; it had only become extremely complex after being mixed with the plight of the innocent Doctor.
"Your performance this time was quite poor." The System NPC's voice was slightly stern.
