Chapter 313: Cola Can Cure Illness (Part 2)
"You shouldn't drink too much cola." The bespectacled Doctor chatted with Ji Xiang to ease his tension, "Some public accounts are alarmist, claiming that cola contains acidic substances that will lead to Gastric Perforation; that's all nonsense."
"Is there a possibility of perforation?" Ji Xiang asked.
"Yes," the bespectacled Doctor said, "Some people drink a large amount of cola in a short time, and the released gas ends up blowing the stomach up. It's not the acidic substances corroding it; the human stomach isn't that fragile."
As he spoke, the bespectacled Doctor seemed to recall something, and he said with focus, "Some time ago, I admitted a Patient who suffered a stomach rupture from drinking cola and chewing Mentos mints."
"Mentos mints?" Ji Xiang was startled.
"Yes, throwing Mentos mints into cola or soda produces a massive amount of gas. It's said that young people abroad like to play like this. The volume of gas is huge, many times greater than the gas released by cola alone, so the stomach gets blown open."
"Drinking a bit of cola normally is fine, and the amount we're using for treatment is also under control, so don't be afraid. Unless you encounter some very special circumstances, it won't happen again."
The bespectacled Doctor comforted him.
His last sentence made Ji Xiang feel very resentful, even though he had this habit himself.
"Hmm, I just feel my stomach is a bit bloated now, nothing else."
"Rest for a while." Seeing that Ji Xiang wasn't nervous, the bespectacled Doctor felt relieved and turned to the computer to busy himself with something.
Ji Xiang calmed down to carefully experience the rare treatment of injecting cola through a gastric tube for gastric stones.
To tell the truth, the cola injection wasn't particularly uncomfortable; it just felt like some stomach bloating.
Ji Xiang didn't even know if it was his own illusion or if it had already taken effect, but the pain in his stomach seemed to have eased somewhat.
Ji Xiang guessed it was a psychological factor; the acidity of cola wasn't that high, and it was absolutely impossible to improve within a few minutes.
After more than ten minutes, the bespectacled Doctor returned and opened the gastric tube.
Negative pressure suction sucked out the gas and cola from the stomach. Then, he began the next round of treatment, injecting the cola.
"Doctor, if there's nothing else, I can do it myself," Ji Xiang said to the bespectacled Doctor.
"Better keep an eye on it," the bespectacled Doctor said, "Didn't I just say, a large amount of cola drunk in a short time can lead to stomach rupture."
"The speed of our cola injection through the gastric tube is faster than drinking it; if we don't control it well, it won't be good if a problem arises."
"Has our 912 had similar problems?" Ji Xiang asked.
The bespectacled Doctor looked a bit distressed, "We haven't, but the higher-ups have repeatedly ordered that similar treatments must have a doctor present. It's fine, I'm basically free during the day, and only get busy when I come for emergency cases at night."
912 is more formal, Ji Xiang thought to himself.
After three treatments, the bespectacled Doctor sent Ji Xiang back.
The abdominal bloating was slightly better, and after returning, Ji Xiang couldn't handle the physical fatigue and fell straight asleep.
12 hours later, the bespectacled Doctor brought Ji Xiang to the Treatment Room again. This time he performed a gastroscopy, preparing to use a snare to go in and take out the stones.
"Doctor, why didn't you take them out at the time?"
"Simply put, they need to soak for a while," the bespectacled Doctor said while operating.
Ji Xiang watched the screen out of the corner of his eye; his speech was slurred and unclear, so he didn't say anything else and focused on watching the bespectacled Doctor's operation.
The bespectacled Doctor used the snare to wrap around the stone and gently locked it tight; Ji Xiang could even hear a "click" sound.
The gastric stone broke in the middle.
The small fragments didn't need to be dealt with; they would go down the digestive tract.
The bespectacled Doctor very cautiously tried to take out the large pieces of stone.
It was very obvious that his level was quite average, at least that's what Ji Xiang thought.
The moment the gastroscopy took the stone out, Ji Xiang vaguely heard the bespectacled Doctor let out a long breath.
"Here, this is the stone," the bespectacled Doctor held the stone in his hand to show Ji Xiang.
The broken stone wasn't large, about 3cm or so, a faint green color.
"In novels, this is an Inner Elixir," the bespectacled Doctor was also relaxed after successfully taking out the stone and joked with Ji Xiang, "In novels, I would be the big villain, shattering your Inner Elixir and taking it out."
"You wouldn't eat it anyway," Ji Xiang said vaguely.
"..." The bespectacled Doctor was startled, then laughed out loud, "Old man, you really like to joke. That's good, with a relaxed mindset, the illness heals faster."
The 4 broken pieces of stone were taken out one by one, the speed getting faster and faster, and the bespectacled Doctor's confidence growing stronger.
When the last fragment was taken out, a flash of light appeared in Ji Xiang's eyes, and he returned to the System Operating Room.
"Teacher, cola really can treat stones," Ji Xiang said upon seeing the System NPC.
"Of course, if you come into contact with gastrointestinal endoscopy in the future, you will have a chance to use it sooner or later," the System NPC said.
"Hmm." Ji Xiang nodded vigorously.
The treatment method was indeed simple, much easier than major surgery, whether for the doctor or the Patient.
Ji Xiang suddenly thought of his current confusion, but hesitated for a moment, didn't tell the System NPC, and exited the System Operating Room.
Better to see what "German Orthopedics" is like first; Ji Xiang didn't want to trouble the System NPC with too many things.
"You must explain the condition to the Patient more patiently, as well as the complications that may occur during post-operative recovery," Sui Zhuren instructed, "A good Surgeon, or rather, a good Doctor, must first let the Patient and the Family Member know what we are doing."
"Xiao Jiang, are you being argumentative?" Sui Zhuren looked at a middle-aged doctor and said, "Not counting emergency cases, besides, what kind of emergency cases can our department have."
That middle-aged doctor gave a hehe smile, his mind read by Sui Zhuren.
"Everyone says there are many medical disputes now; if you explain carefully, can't you tell if the Family Member has an antisocial personality? The vast majority of Patients and Family Members are reasonable; how much effort you put in, the Family Member will give you that much goodwill."
Ji Xiang watched Sui Zhuren carefully; these words seemed to make some sense.
"Go ask around at the Gastrointestinal Surgery department later; I won't go into detail here. Negative examples, I feel uncomfortable all over if I talk too much."
"Rounds!"
After Sui Zhuren finished his instructions, he pressed his hands down and led the doctors under him to make rounds.
"Teacher Deng, what kind of Patients do we usually treat?" Ji Xiang asked while following beside Deng Chaohong.
"Many are Joint replacement and tendon or ligament injuries," Professor Deng said, "However, I'm at the Outpatient Department today, so you can't follow me into surgery. Usually, communicate more with the Resident Chief; you can still participate in some emergency surgeries."
"Hmm."
"Xiao Ji, have you had any contact with orthopedic surgery?" Deng Chaohong felt a stir in his heart and asked.
"I know a little, but not much," Ji Xiang said truthfully.
