Chapter 347: Fawkes

~6 min read 1,056 words

The Unbreakable Extension Charm has many applications, such as:

Hermione’s beaded bag afterward: inside were books, clothing, a tent, potions, Slytherin’s locket, and the Sword of Gryffindor.

This handbag played a crucial role during Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione’s journey to find the Horcruxes;

The Weasleys’ future dwelling tent: from outside it looked like a shabby Muggle two-person tent, but inside it resembled an old-fashioned apartment with multiple bedrooms and a kitchen;

Mr. Weasley’s Ford Anglia car: Mr. Weasley admitted he had charmed his Ford Anglia so its interior could comfortably accommodate eight people, six large trunks, two owls, and a rat.

Of course, the most famous example is Newt Scamander’s suitcase:

The interior of this suitcase was expanded into a vast space containing multiple ecosystems, designed to house and care for various magical creatures.

Speaking of magical creatures…

On the third floor of the castle, Wizard Sean Green naturally entered the Headmaster’s office.

In the spacious, beautiful circular room, the former headmasters were nearly all dozing.

He was not alone in the room.

Perched on a tall gilded perch behind the door sat an ancient bird, resembling a turkey with half its feathers plucked.

“Mr. Phoenix.”

Wizard Sean Green looked at the Phoenix.

A clear, melodic hum instantly filled the room, like singing.

Wizard Sean Green quietly fed Mr. Fawkes some herbs—daffodil petals, aconite roots, and the like.

【You gained the affection of the magical creature Phoenix (Fawkes) at an apprentice’s standard: Affection +1】

Hearing the panel’s voice, Wizard Sean Green’s feeding motion became more reverent.

Gaining Mr. Fawkes’s affection was extremely difficult; even though he often secretly approached him, this was the first time Wizard Sean Green had earned any affection.

Wizard Sean Green watched it—suddenly, the Phoenix paused, gazing at him with a sorrowful look, while emitting a choking sound.

It made it sound terribly ill.

Its eyes were dull, and as Wizard Sean Green watched, a few more feathers fell from its tail.

When Wizard Sean Green finished feeding it, its entire body suddenly burst into flames.

As if Wizard Sean Green’s feeding had caused its death.

Wizard Sean Green now understood why Mr. Fawkes had been happy.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix had become a ball of fire;

It let out a cry of agony, then vanished, leaving only a pile of still-smoldering ashes on the floor.

“That’s terrifying—”

Wizard Sean Green forced himself to look frightened.

As he looked down, he saw a tiny, wrinkled hatchling poking its head out of the ashes.

Then it angrily pecked at Wizard Sean Green’s robe.

As if accusing him of faking it too badly.

“Sorry, sir.”

Wizard Sean Green said.

Mr. Fawkes shook his little head and went to eat.

The office door opened, and Dumbledore walked in, laughing silently.

“Headmaster Dumbledore, good afternoon.

Uh—the Phoenix just suddenly caught fire—”

Wizard Sean Green chose his words carefully.

“It didn’t confuse you, I see—but I suppose it’s about time. Its appearance has been dreadful for days; I’ve been telling it to hurry up.

Mr. Green, I believe you already knew. Fawkes is a Phoenix.

When a Phoenix nears death, it burns itself and is reborn from the ashes. You just watched it… its appearance was as ugly as an old bird’s.

But it’s a pity you had to witness it on its Rebirth Day,”

Headmaster Dumbledore said, sitting down behind his desk,

“It is usually very beautiful:

Covered in astonishing red and golden feathers. Phoenixes are truly peculiar and enchanting creatures.

They can carry extremely heavy loads, their tears have healing properties, and they are exceptionally loyal companions.”

Headmaster Dumbledore spoke, then smiled at Wizard Sean Green, whose eyes now shone brightly.

This child only shows emotion when faced with the wonder of magic…

His obsession with magic could no longer be taken lightly.

Wizard Sean Green felt even more strongly that he should visit the Headmaster’s office more often.

Apparition, carrying heavy loads, healing, resurrection…

The Phoenix possessed too many incredible magical properties, and Wizard Sean Green remembered that Phoenixes were immune to Avada Kedavra.

Avada Kedavra could only force it to be reborn once, reverting to hatchling form, because Phoenixes never truly die.

During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Fawkes swallowed an Avada Kedavra curse.

What a pity.

Until now, Wizard Sean Green had visited the Headmaster’s office many times and secretly fed Mr. Fawkes for a long while, yet its affection had barely increased—only a pitiful three points.

Moreover, Wizard Sean Green knew that for a magical creature like Fawkes, the ritual magic he would need to create would be unprecedentedly complex.

Fortunately, Wizard Sean Green had plenty of time—and even better, he was accustomed to keeping company with time.

Stepping out of the Headmaster’s office, the sky was already gray.

Christmas was just around the corner, yet Wizard Sean Green still did not know whether he could leave Hogwarts.

Meanwhile, in the Headmaster’s office.

“Albus, Christmas is coming.”

Minerva McGonagall stared out at the falling snow and handed in a leave request.

“Oh, of course. But,”

Dumbledore seemed to recall the mountain of paperwork, blinking once,

“Severus has applied for detention, scheduled for…”

“Starting September 1st, continuing until September 1st… no holidays, and… every year—nonsense!”

Minerva McGonagall frowned, staring at Dumbledore as if silently questioning his approval of such a decision.

“Minerva, regarding your family’s holiday matters, I clearly should not interfere too much.”

Dumbledore interlaced his fingers, glanced at his desk, and his lips curved into a wider smile…

He still had a plate of Lemon Drops, Cockroach Clusters…

Minerva McGonagall glanced once more at the smiling Dumbledore, then turned toward the dungeons.

“I mean, why not wait a moment? Severus is on his way… for the Dark Arts Defense professor position.”

Dumbledore gently dissuaded her.

“You cannot approve—that’s not a good position.”

Minerva McGonagall paused, saying.

At that moment, the door opened and a cloud of black swept in.

The kettle in the Headmaster’s office began to whistle, and soon the circular room was filled with heated argument.

The atmosphere gradually sank into an eerie silence.

Just as silence settled, Professor Tera pushed the door open, beaming.

Two more chapters later—readers can see them when they wake up in the morning.
