Chapter 10: The Missing Third Party!!
"Whatever you want to say, explain it after we get to the Guard Hall!"
"Wait!" Yun Mu reacted at this moment and hurriedly explained: "Although I killed it, I didn't kill this person!"
"Isn't that still you killing them?" the Guard young girl glared at her fiercely and said.
"I..." Yun Mu was slightly stunned; she wanted to start explaining, but for a moment, she didn't know where to begin.
After thinking for a moment, she decided to start with the simple parts.
"This person was already dead; it's just that their corpse was transformed into, er..." She paused for a moment: "A creature similar to an Undead. This guy just attacked me, and my counterattack was purely out of self-defense!"
"Besides, killing an Undead isn't against the law, right!"
This world has Undead; as long as there is a place with many dead, under the year-round, month-after-month soaking of death energy, there will always be a few corpses that 'come back to life' from their graves.
Although more than 30 years ago, the Frost Kingdom issued the "Burial Regulations," which prohibited large-scale burial of corpses and required all corpses buried in public cemeteries to be cremated.
But because there are many folk beliefs circulating that corpses must remain intact after death, otherwise they are considered incomplete.
And most wealthy nobles and rich merchants are unwilling to cremate corpses; some even go so far as to deliberately create environments suitable for Undead to breed, intending to achieve the goal of resurrecting themselves or their ancestors.
Coupled with orphans like Yun Mu, vagrants, and most poor people, who simply cannot afford the cost of cremation and burial.
This has made the implementation of the "Burial Regulations" exceptionally difficult, and even disguisedly spawned the gray profession of Corpse Collector.
But regardless, a regulation implemented for over thirty years has had some effect; nowadays, people living in the city rarely see Undead.
It is precisely because of this that, upon hearing Yun Mu say these words, a very obvious look of confusion appeared on the young girl's face.
"Undead?"
"Something like that." Yun Mu nodded hurriedly, then kicked the corpse on the ground to flip it over.
"Although I don't know who you were before you died, I'll still say sorry to you first." She apologized silently in her heart.
After flipping the corpse over, Yun Mu looked at the Guard young girl and said:
"Look closely at the appearance of this corpse; does it look like a normal human?"
After the corpse was flipped, the skin previously hidden by clothing was exposed.
"Hmm?"
The Guard young girl noticed the abnormality of the corpse. She squatted down, took the glowing device hanging on the chest of her Police Guard Uniform with her right hand, and held it close to the corpse to look around.
"Dried Corpse Murder Case!?"
The moment she saw the surface features of the corpse, a flash of inspiration struck the Guard young girl's mind.
She suddenly raised her head to look at Yun Mu, placed both hands directly on her shoulders, and asked:
"Are you that missing third party? Was the person who was confronting you just now the culprit of the Dried Corpse Murder Case!?"
"What missing third party?" Yun Mu was stunned on the spot when she heard this title, and it took her a while to figure out the ins and outs.
"If I'm not mistaken, that should be me." She nodded first, then continued: "And the woman who was confronting me just now is indeed the culprit of the Dried Corpse Murder Case."
"Ah—how could I let the criminal get away!"
After receiving Yun Mu's affirmative answer, the Guard young girl squatted on the ground with a face full of regret.
"Is it still in time to chase?" She seemed to be asking Yun Mu.
"It should be too late." Yun Mu shook her head.
The terrain inside the sewer is complex; this much time is enough for the other party to have taken several forks.
And to be honest, based on the other party's strength, relying solely on her and this Guard lady in front of her, if they really chased after them, they would likely just be adding to the other party's meal.
"Speaking of which, you..." Yun Mu wanted to ask why the other party was in the sewer, but after thinking about it, she felt the question was a bit strange, so she decisively changed her words:
"Where are the other guards? Why are you the only one?"
"My teammates are not here."
After hearing Yun Mu's question, the Guard young girl shook her head, then pulled out a certificate from her pocket with a brass gear printed on the surface, and above the gear, a pattern of two silver longswords crossed.
Below the certificate, the five brass-colored characters "Supernatural Guard" were clearly written.
The Guard young girl opened the certificate; the first page was a gray-white headshot, followed by the name and position.
Lita Sisilaiya, this was the young girl's name.
And the position...
"Supernatural Guard Reserve member?" Yun Mu looked at the other party with a somewhat strange expression.
When she first saw the certificate, she thought they were very impressive, but it turned out to be just a reserve.
And what kind of ghost name is Supernatural Guard? Just looking at it gives one an inexplicable sense of shame!
"Ahem, this squad is currently just experimental, recruiting members on a small scale; the name will be changed later." Seeming to see Yun Mu's thoughts, the Guard young girl, no, Lita, gave a light cough and explained.
"Besides me, Frostfall City currently has one official member from another city; I only came over today to assist the regular guards in the investigation."
After a pause, Lita continued: "You should have guessed it too; we found your traces at the scene of the Dried Corpse Murder Case, and then used police dogs to track the scent you left behind, all the way to the entrance of the sewer."
"But the smell inside was too complex, and the police dogs eventually lost the direction."
"There was no other way, we could only send people into the sewer to search, but after working all night, we didn't find anything, so everyone went to rest."
"And I have already stepped half a foot into the Supernatural Realm, so I didn't go back, wanting to try my luck."
When she said this, a smile appeared on Lita's face.
"Facts have proven that my luck is still very good."
She had been attracted by a sudden Howl earlier; after arriving here, the first thing she saw was the headless corpse lying on the ground and the two people confronting each other.
That was why she shouted that line for both of them to raise their hands without hesitation.
"So..." Yun Mu raised her right hand, the silver-white handcuffs hanging lonely on her wrist.
"Can you help me unlock this thing?"
"Haha... this." Lita gave a dry laugh and explained: "I borrowed this from other guards, and I don't have the key either. Although I could force it open, I would have to pay for the damage, so..."
"You know." She winked slightly at Yun Mu.
"Forget it." Rolling her eyes helplessly, Yun Mu lowered her right hand and said, "It doesn't have any effect anyway."
Shaking her head, she looked at the corpse on the ground: "What do you plan to do with this body?"
"Let's take it back; at the very least, we need to confirm the deceased's identity." Lita spoke halfway, then looked at the head soaking in the sewage.
"That head—" After hesitating for a moment, just as Lita gritted her teeth and intended to walk into the sewage, she saw Yun Mu walk calmly to the side of the head and lift it directly out of the sewage with one hand.
"I'll carry it," Yun Mu sighed slightly and said.
Influenced by the memories of her predecessor, she could still endure this level of thing; at worst, she would just wash up a few more times afterward.
PS: A Corpse Collector is a type of merchant who specializes in purchasing corpses; they use cheap prices to acquire those dead bodies.
Afterward, they resell them at a high price to those Undead mages who need corpses, or to certain wealthy individuals who need organ transplants.
