Chapter 19: Su Xiangwan

~8 min read 1,457 words

Watching her son's happy expression, Qin Shu felt a slight ache in her heart; it seemed she could no longer give him a complete family.

Even having him grow up by her side was a luxury.

Qin Shu knew that she and Gu Tingyan would divorce sooner or later because of Chu Sheng.

Not wanting to show her emotions in front of the child, Qin Shu walked over with a smile on her face.

Just after finishing breakfast, Qin Shu received a call from the nursing home and hurriedly answered it: "Dr. Chen, what happened to my grandmother?"

Gu Tingyan put down his knife and fork, his dark eyes fixed intently on Qin Shu.

The person on the other end of the line said happily, "Miss Qin, it seems your grandmother has remembered you."

"She is in a better state today and asked me where Huahua has gone."

"Would you like to come over and see?"

The corners of Qin Shu's eyes grew moist, and she said in a low voice, "Okay, I'll be there right away."

Gu Tingyan asked in a low voice, "What happened to Grandmother?"

He knew that Qin Shu had a grandmother, and the two had relied on each other for survival, but she did not remember Qin Shu.

Qin Shu said happily, "She remembers me."

She looked up and smiled genuinely, but after smiling, she remembered that they had only just finished arguing, and her smile faded.

Gu Tingyan curled his lips as he looked at her: "Mm, I'll be responsible for taking the child today."

Qin Shu: "Mm."

Qin Shu took her bag and drove all the way to the nursing home; as she followed the director inside, Qin Shu stood outside the glass window and saw a thin woman carefully wiping the corners of the old lady's mouth.

Grandmother was smiling very happily.

Qin Shu's grandmother had forgotten many things.

If it weren't for Qin Shu, she would have followed her 【to the grave】 as well.

The old lady basically didn't let anyone get close to her and was on guard against everyone; as soon as someone approached, she would become nervous and afraid, and only Qin Shu could get close to her.

Even when Chenchen and Gu Tingyan came to see her, they would be chased out by the old lady with a stick.

Qin Shu had thought about taking her grandmother to live with her and hiring two caregivers, but the old lady would not live with her.

This person was actually able to get close to her grandmother.

Seeing Qin Shu staring at Su Xiangwan, the director noticed and said with a smile, "Her name is Su Xiangwan; she is a new volunteer who just arrived a month ago, and the old lady likes her very much."

"Usually, caregivers are chased out after delivering food, but she is an exception."

Qin Shu nodded and pushed the door open to enter.

Seeing her enter, the old lady raised her eyes and looked over, stunned; she stared intently at her face, trying hard to discern who she was.

The old lady didn't remember, so she smiled kindly at Qin Shu: "Little girl, you are truly beautiful, as beautiful as my granddaughter Huahua."

"Have you seen my Huahua?"

The old lady gestured with her hands: "She is about this tall, very handsome, and has looked like a fairy since she was small."

That was the eight-year-old little Qin Shu.

Qin Shu's eyes reddened; she walked over and crouched in front of her grandmother's knees, holding her hands against her cheeks, her voice choked and hoarse: "Grandmother, it's Huahua."

The old lady stared at her, frowned, and shook her head repeatedly: "No, my Huahua is only eight years old."

"She doesn't look like you."

The old lady said, "But you are as beautiful as my Huahua."

Seeing such a beautiful little girl crying, the old lady panicked and used her wrinkled, aged hands to wipe Qin Shu's tears incessantly.

"Don't cry, little girl, don't cry, what is the matter with you?"

Qin Shu's tears flowed uncontrollably, her voice choked: "I missed my grandmother."

Seeing her cry, the old lady felt an inexplicable and intense heartache; she reached out to gently hug her and patted her head: "There, there, don't cry."

When Qin Shu was little and suffered grievances outside, every time she cried in her grandmother's arms, her grandmother would hold her and comfort her just like this.

Qin Shu wiped away her tears, looked up, and smiled at her grandmother: "Can I call you Grandmother? I really miss her."

The old lady nodded and said generously, "Alright."

Qin Shu curled her lips into a smile; she looked up at Su Xiangwan and thanked her sincerely: "Thank you for taking such good care of my grandmother."

She took a check out of her bag, filled in five hundred thousand, and handed it over: "Miss Su, may I trouble you to continue taking care of my grandmother?"

Qin Shu had hired several caregivers before, but they had all been chased away by the old lady.

Seeing that Qin Shu had given a check, and for five hundred thousand at that, Su Xiangwan was stunned; she reached out to push it back and said with a soft smile, "Miss Qin, I am a volunteer; this is what I am supposed to do."

"Besides, it has already been paid for."

She shook her head: "I cannot accept this money."

As a volunteer, she received 1,500 a month, which was enough for her to live on.

Qin Shu also felt that she might have been presumptuous, but she had nothing else to offer in gratitude, only money.

Seeing that Su Xiangwan's expression was earnest and that she truly would not accept it, Qin Shu could only put the check back into her bag: "I'm sorry, I was too abrupt."

Su Xiangwan smiled: "You love your grandmother very much."

Qin Shu looked down at the old lady, who reached out to hold her hand and smiled at her as well.

Qin Shu: "Mm."

"Don't worry, I will come over whenever I have time."

Qin Shu smiled: "Okay, thank you."

Su Xiangwan greeted the old lady: "Grandma, I have something to do, so I'm leaving first."

The old lady waved her hand and said happily, "Hey, goodbye, Wanwan."

Qin Shu smiled as she crouched in front of the old lady, looking up at her: "Grandmother."

The old lady stared at her in a daze, looking at that face again and again, and said in shock, "Oh my, Huahua? My Huahua has come to see me."

Qin Shu was stunned: "Grandma, do you remember me?"

The old lady reached out and hugged her tightly, saying with hot tears in her eyes, "No matter who Grandma forgets, I could never forget my Huahua."

"Come with me." The old lady stood up and mysteriously pulled her over to open her own cabinet; she took out a piggy bank from inside and pulled out a stack of banknotes.

There was about ten thousand yuan or so.

The old lady took the money out, placed it into Qin Shu's hands, and looked at her with heartache: "This is what Grandma saved, it's all for my Huahua."

"My Huahua is out there working hard all by herself, it's not easy; you need to buy yourself something good to eat."

Qin Shu's mother was gone, her father didn't acknowledge her, and she had to rely on herself for everything; this old woman was no longer of any use, and this was all she could save.

This was what she had saved bit by bit, it was the old lady's entire life savings.

Qin Shu's eyes turned red, the tip of her nose was red, a wave of bitterness welled up, and large tears fell down.

Qin Shu's voice was hoarse as she put the money back: "Grandma, I can earn money now, I can earn a lot of money."

"You keep it for me for now."

Qin Shu stayed with the old lady at the nursing home for the whole morning, until Su Tuantuan called to urge her.

"Huahua, hurry over, it's almost your turn for Director Chen's audition."

Qin Shu: "Mm, okay."

She stood up to say goodbye to the old lady: "Grandma, I have to go to work."

The old lady patted her hand: "Alright, go on, Grandma can take care of herself."

The old lady watched Qin Shu leave the room and secretly followed her, walking downstairs with a stumbling gait; she stood at the doorway and watched Qin Shu's car drive away, and even after the car turned into a small black dot, she still stood there for an hour.
