Chapter 24: Brick Girl (Seek Follow-up Reads)

~7 min read 1,398 words

“I want 80% of the commission!”

Chen Yansen stopped walking and stared fixedly at the other man, speaking slowly and deliberately.

“Impossible. No such high commission rate exists anywhere in Hui’an Province. I can at most fight for you to get 50%.”

Zhao Maolin shook his head without hesitation and flatly refused.

“70%. That’s my bottom line.”

Chen Yansen’s gaze darkened slightly, his tone firm; as he spoke, he carefully observed Zhao Maolin’s subtle facial expressions.

“Little Chen, my upper limit is 60%. Don’t keep testing me. To be honest with you, the other two companies won’t go above this either.”

Zhao Maolin paused briefly, then suddenly lifted his head, his eyes serious and his voice sincere as he explained.

“Manager Zhao, looking forward to a fruitful partnership.”

Chen Yansen’s brow instantly relaxed, revealing a bright row of white teeth as he grinned and extended his right hand.

A 90% commission rate did exist in the future—but that was fifteen years from now. At the early stage of mobile network development, competition among carriers had not yet reached a boiling point.

“Now can you finally tell me which school you’re from?”

Zhao Maolin laughed heartily and shook his hand.

“Xucheng College, 2010 freshman, Chen Yansen.”

“Xucheng College, 2010 freshman, Wang Zihao.”

Chen Yansen and Wang Zihao exchanged glances, then burst out laughing simultaneously, each introducing themselves.

“You two are really something else!”

Zhao Maolin’s smile froze instantly, caught between laughter and frustration.

Just ten minutes ago, one of them claimed to be Chen Heyu, the other Wang Zhengxuan—turns out neither gave their real name.

But he could understand: if they didn’t secure the agency rights, they’d have deceived over a thousand freshmen. If their true identities were exposed, they might not even be allowed to finish school—the university would surely hold them accountable.

At best, a disciplinary record; at worst, expulsion!

“Manager Zhao, can the materials be ready by tomorrow?”

Chen Yansen smiled faintly and asked directly.

All campus card packages had slight variations; naturally, the posters, banners, and flyers needed corresponding adjustments.

“Stop calling me Manager Zhao—it’s too formal. Call me Brother Zhao. Don’t worry about the materials; we have our own printing plant. We’ll have them ready tonight.”

Zhao Maolin looked at the two of them with clear admiration.

When he was their age, he hadn’t possessed this kind of courage or wit.

As the saying goes, respect the clothes before respecting the man. From their attire alone, he could tell Chen Yansen and Wang Zihao came from wealthy families—and with their exceptional abilities, he felt even more inclined to befriend them.

Chen Yansen and Wang Zihao immediately began calling him “Brother Zhao,” and suddenly the three of them were as warm and close as long-separated brothers.

All the final details were settled amid laughter and cheer.

“Little Gu, for the next few days, you’ll follow Little Chen and help coordinate staffing at the campus service centers.”

Zhao Maolin called over the uniformed girl from earlier.

Though Chen Yansen and Wang Zihao seemed steady and reliable, they were both genuine freshmen—still inexperienced in interpersonal dynamics. They might clash with regional agents and disrupt this year’s campus card business.

Besides, sending one of his own people there would prevent underlings from slacking off.

“Understood, Manager Zhao.”

Gu Wenwen nodded, glancing at Chen Yansen with a complex expression, silently muttering to herself: “The prettier the woman, the better she lies—and handsome men are no different.”

After a brief exchange, they exchanged contact information.

Then Zhao Maolin warmly stood up to see them off.

Chen Yansen pressed his car key lightly, and the Mercedes E300 parked by the roadside unlocked with a beep, its lights flickering on.

Seeing this, Zhao Maolin was internally startled, raising his estimation of Chen Yansen further; he quickly praised: “Little Chen, you’re truly young and accomplished—already driving a Mercedes in your first year.”

“Brother Zhao, I’ll be honest—the car’s rented.”

Chen Yansen squinted and spoke plainly.

“Hahaha! Young people are so humble! Once things settle down these next few days, I’ll treat you to a night at Galaxy Star.”

The more Chen Yansen said this, the less Zhao Maolin believed him.

In his eyes, Chen Yansen was clearly a rich kid—and his desire to befriend him grew even stronger.

“Old lecher!”

Gu Wenwen spat inwardly. As a local, she knew exactly what Galaxy Star was—a place respectable people wouldn’t even glance at without blushing.

“Yeah, Little Gu-sister, see you tomorrow.”

Relaxed now, Chen Yansen nodded and finally took a proper look at Gu Wenwen. Her figure was curvaceous; the light gray uniform clung tightly to her, almost straining.

Too bad she was wearing flesh-colored stockings.

He preferred white ones.

“Big liar! Little lecher!”

Gu Wenwen seethed at his brazen stare, but since her boss was nearby, she dared not lash out—only smiled sweetly and replied: “Little brother, drive carefully now.”

Little?

I’m huge beyond measure, you idiot!

Chen Yansen rolled his eyes at her, waved to Zhao Maolin, rolled up the window, and drove toward the eastern campus of Xucheng College.

Halfway there.

“Let the secondary agent handle the western campus—we won’t have to run back and forth. We can focus entirely on expanding the eastern market.”

Chen Yansen said to Wang Zihao.

“Senior Chen, lately I’ve felt like I’m dreaming. First we resold MP3s and MP4s, now we’re handling phone cards. Honestly, if it weren’t for you dragging me along, I’d still be stuck in an internet cafe playing CrossFire.”

Wang Zihao nodded, then sighed wistfully.

“If you still want to play games, I won’t stop you.”

Chen Yansen knew exactly what he meant but teased him anyway.

“Hehe, how can games compete with cash?”

Wang Zihao grinned, flashing his white teeth, then flopped back onto the leather seat, rubbing against it vigorously, savoring its soft cushioning with obvious delight.

Chen Yansen smiled but said nothing.

After a while, Wang Zihao sensed something was off. He sat up sharply and asked: “Senior Chen, aren’t we lost? I feel like we’re getting farther and farther from civilization.”

Outside the window, the scenery grew desolate, the surroundings indistinguishable from the countryside.

“Do you know what Xucheng College’s nickname is?”

Chen Yansen smirked, asking with a smile.

“No idea.”

Wang Zihao shook his head, baffled by Chen Yansen’s question.

“Zhuxian Town University, Dong Erpu University, hahaha!”

Chen Yansen laughed loudly, gripping the steering wheel.

At that time, the eastern campus of Xucheng College lay far from the city, nestled in Zhuxian Town, surrounded on three sides by farmland and bordering a village. Lying in bed, you could see endless waves of wheat; step outside the gate, and within minutes you’d reach the village’s CBD.

“Holy shit! No way!”

Wang Zihao lost all interest in the luxury car, staring wide-eyed out the window. As the scenery grew more barren, his heart sank.

He immediately deflated.

“How about I give you a quick tour of the campus first?”

Chen Yansen suggested.

Originally, they’d planned to check into a hotel near the school gate and have lunch.

Since they’d arrived a day early, registration hadn’t started yet, so they couldn’t move into the dorms.

“Nah, let’s eat first. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

Wang Zihao thought for a moment, then declined Chen Yansen’s offer—he didn’t want to look like a coward in front of his best friend.

The car kept driving.

“Boom—”

Late summer weather changed fast. In an instant, dark clouds gathered, and fat raindrops pattered down, filling the air with the scent of damp earth.

The rain intensified, pouring down in torrents.

A dense curtain of rain blurred the road ahead, turning everything hazy.

Just then, the school gate appeared faintly in the distance—they’d finally arrived!

As Chen Yansen pulled the car to a stop, sharp, angry knocks pounded on the window: “Tap-tap-tap!”

“Who the hell is it? Are you crazy?”

Chen Yansen rolled down the window instinctively, frowning in annoyance.

Standing in the downpour was a girl with an oval face, wearing a torn white raincoat, her hair plastered to her cheeks, her eyelids reddened.

She raised a brick in one hand and struggled to drag a suitcase with the other, shouting furiously at Chen Yansen: “You’re the one who’s crazy! You didn’t even look where you were driving—you splashed dirty water all over me!”
