Chapter 339: An Immortal Being Appears!

~9 min read 1,657 words

Aleigu and the others stared blankly at this ghastly nether soil.

The heaven and earth when they came, though barren and eerie, were not bloody, and there was a blood-colored sea of flowers of incomparable tragic beauty, adding the only scenic line to that stretch of heaven and earth.

Yet who could have imagined.

On the opposite shore of that beautiful blood-colored sea of flowers, heaven and earth had become this ghastly—a stretch of deathly still, utterly extinguished nether-soil world.

Everywhere was an aura of carnage, broken weapons and wreckage, bones so numerous they could be piled into little hills.

At this moment.

They somewhat understood why there were so many bones within the yellow-brown long river; it all came from here.

"Are we still going to the opposite shore?" Aitu spoke up.

The gods and demons: "……"

They only stared at Aitu with speechless looks.

Gu Yun, caught between tears and laughter: "How could we possibly go? The young master sent us to scout the world within the mysterious fog; we have to bring back information. It's obvious that if we go there we'll die without a doubt. People have died here already—how could we scout and bring back information for the young master?"

Only by living can we bring back information; if we're dead, how can information be brought back? It sinks to the bottom of the sea—there's no difference from not having scouted at all.

This isn't because they're cowardly, but because they truly think according to normal logic; at the same time, Kamikawa Mitsu had told them not to make unnecessary sacrifices.

The nether soil on the opposite shore—go there and they'll die a hundred percent; that would be giving themselves away for nothing.

In the end, after discussion, they made their decision.

"We're still relatively safe on the Bridge of Helplessness. As long as we don't step onto the opposite shore, the danger shouldn't be too great. Let's walk to the end of the Bridge of Helplessness and see the situation, so we can bring back a bit more information for the young master."

Aleigu proposed.

The gods and demons all nodded, expressing their agreement.

Facing the terrifying sight on the opposite shore of the River of Forgetfulness, they were truly shaken, yet still did not forget to gather information, carefully checking whether any other text had been left on the bridge surface.

Perhaps the text left on the bridge surface could yield some information about the nether soil on the opposite shore.

Unfortunately, as they looked all the way along and recorded the content of every passage of text, none revealed any information about the nether soil on the opposite shore.

When they reached the other end of the Bridge of Helplessness.

The ghastly nether-soil scene suddenly unfolded before them, letting them see the terror of the nether soil at even closer range.

Before the bridgehead, they saw bones strewn everywhere—dead for who knows how long—preserved for ages in this heaven and earth filled with yin qi and death qi, without weathering away.

One could see that these bones all belonged to the strong in life; gods and demons were everywhere.

"This is!"

They paid no attention to the carnage spread everywhere; their gaze fell upon the steps beneath the bridge.

There lay a corpse sprawled there, its hand gripping the steps tightly, as if before death it had used every ounce of strength, trying to prop itself up on the steps, yet unable to lift itself, and in the end had drained all its blood and died of exhaustion right there.

Because it was face-down, the face could not be seen.

The garments it wore looked extremely ancient, somewhat similar to the ancient attire of the Qin dynasty era of the Hua kingdom.

Yet Aleigu and the others paid no attention to how the other had died, nor cared about the clothes it wore; all their attention was fixed on this corpse.

The corpse had not rotted.

It preserved a fleshly body that did not decay and did not perish.

Even the garments on its body, despite being shrouded by the death qi and yin qi of this stretch of nether soil, had rotted away, yet its fleshly body still remained as it was at the moment of death—neither perishing nor decaying.

Aleigu and the others stared fixedly at this corpse, their expressions changing, their eyes flickering nonstop.

"An immortal existence!!!"

Gods and demons are powerful, able to move mountains and fill seas, pluck stars and catch the moon.

But they are not ageless and undying.

Since ancient times, how many mighty gods and demons stood proud between heaven and earth, their fame shaking past and present—yet they all perished into the long river of time, unable to withstand the erosion of the years, aging and dying.

Gods and demons are a symbol of power, but not of eternity.

To want eternity, to want to escape the erosion of the years, to want true immortality and indestructibility—one must only reach that legendary realm: the Seven Steps of Divinity!

Only by stepping into the Seventh Step of Divinity can gods and demons truly be called gods and demons.

The Seven Steps of Divinity is also called Immortality; upon reaching this step, a god or demon will be immortal and indestructible, transcending life and death, no longer subject to the erosion of the years, enduring through the ages alongside heaven and earth, sharing their longevity!

And this corpse before their eyes.

Based on the degree of decay of the garments it wore, and accounting for the protection of the shrouding yin qi and death qi, a rough calculation puts it at least eight or nine hundred thousand years old.

A god or demon from at least eight or nine hundred thousand years ago, and dead at that, yet its fleshly body had not rotted for eight or nine hundred thousand years.

Even the most powerful god or demon could not achieve this—unless… they had reached Immortality!

Breath quickening, blood boiling, Aleigu and the others stared at this corpse with burning gazes, their eyes filled with greed and excitement.

This is a being of immortality!!

At the very least a supreme figure who reached the Seventh Step of Divinity; otherwise it would absolutely be impossible for the fleshly body to remain undecayed after death.

For gods and demons of the world, to have a fleshly body that neither decays nor rots after death, one can only have reached Immortality, only have stepped into the Seventh Step of Divinity.

To put it another way, the corpse before them was, in life, a being of immortality.

A being of immortality—even as a corpse, it is a supreme treasure; moreover, such a completely intact immortal corpse—if one were to study it closely, perhaps one could oneself reach Immortality; even if one could not reach Immortality, one's strength could still advance.

This is absolutely a treasure, a supreme treasure that gods and demons alike could not resist the temptation of!

One could see their eyes flickering, struggling, making a choice that wove together heaven and man.

In the end.

They all exhaled a deep breath, looked at each other in silence, and did not choose to fight over it.

Kamikawa Mitsu had given them false memories—memories of loyalty to Kamikawa Mitsu; if not for these memories of absolute loyalty, they could not have withstood this temptation and would have long since come to blows.

"Hand this corpse over to the young master; this trip of ours was not in vain, haha."

Aitu said excitedly.

Aleigu bowed his head: "On the earliest battlefields, even Immortal-level beings were the pillar combat forces. If we can bring back an Immortal corpse for the Young Lord, the Young Lord will surely be very pleased."

Saying so, he put away the Immortal corpse.

The others did not stop him; they were not afraid that Aleigu would keep it all for himself.

At the same time.

Tokyo, Japan, Arakawa Ward, an apartment.

"An Immortal corpse." Kamikawa Mitsu looked at the Immortal corpse that Aleigu had put away.

Kamikawa Mitsu was not surprised that Aleigu and the others did not fight over the corpse; the only thing that surprised him was that this corpse was at the Immortal level.

In this grim netherworld, with bones strewn across the land, for there to be an Immortal-level corpse on the Bridge of Helplessness — what did that imply?

It meant that the carnage of this realm was so extreme that even Immortal-level beings had to die here.

It meant that what happened here very likely involved the participation of a being beyond Immortal — and that being might still be alive!

This was an extremely dangerous signal, one that could not fail to make Kamikawa Mitsu sit up and take notice.

Now that the Otherworld invasion had begun from the Void Demon Realm, some time had already passed. During this period, Kamikawa Mitsu had seen very, very many gods and demons.

But he had never once encountered a single Immortal-level being, which was enough to show how rare and how powerful Immortal-level beings were — even a peerless hero might not necessarily reach that level.

Now, however, he had seen one.

Even though it was only the corpse of an Immortal-level being, it at least proved that the Otherworld did have Immortal gods and demons. Immortality was no longer just an Otherworld legend, nor Kamikawa Mitsu's fantasy — there were gods and demons in the Otherworld who could reach Immortality.

It was possible that, in the days to come, the Otherworld invading Earth would contain Immortal-level beings.

It was possible that the truth behind the carnage of this realm was triggered by an Immortal-level being, or even a being beyond Immortal. And without knowing for what purpose that being had struck at this realm, one could not rule out the possibility that Earth might be destroyed!
