Chapter 50: The Merciful God
"Why not spread the word?" Leander said, frowning. "Besides, if they see we are prepared over there, they should also know that the Red Moon did not descend, right?"
"Of course, otherwise why would they send so few people to probe us? They want to go and help the Believers of the Red Moon, so they keep sending elites over. Perhaps their intelligence is faulty, otherwise they wouldn't have actively attacked our camp." Camp Commander Jili said with a smile, "I thought the Wealth Church wouldn't be able to handle the descent of the Red Moon, but fortunately, they did quite well."
"You have been praising them for nearly a week now, they are also... by the way, those Xiahui People recommended by the City Hall are quite good. They performed very well in today's operation, so I took the liberty of giving them a little more pay," Leander requested.
Leander felt no pressure regarding the request; it was being paid for by the City Hall anyway.
"Oh? How did they perform well?" Hearing about those Xiahui People, Camp Commander Jili felt a bit of curiosity.
Being able to be recommended by the City Hall and also considered good by the Wealth Church—he still remembered that there were very few Xiahui People in Tana City, and he didn't know when so many had popped up.
"Those guys only lost 13 people today, but they killed over forty Mutated Rats. Every one of them was brave and skilled in battle," Leander remarked with emotion. "Many veterans wouldn't be able to reach this level."
"That is because none of them are Awakened. Are those Xiahui People Awakened?" Hearing this data, Jili frowned in confusion.
Under normal circumstances, for a group of over a hundred people, it would be considered good to kill a dozen or so Mutated Rats.
Not to mention that they had only just reported for duty not long ago.
"No signs of being Awakened, at least I can't tell." The War Church is not good at checking whether the other party is Awakened; only Awakened who are good at observation can do that.
"Then what exactly happened in Xiahui to produce so many refugees?" Jili waved his hand. "Money is easy to talk about. Let's finish clearing out the Mutated Rats first; it only has benefits and no drawbacks for us. When we have time, we must strike these Barbarians hard once, so they don't think Tana City's defenses are weak."
"Yes!" Leander patted his chest. "Fight for honor!"
Scrolling through the forum, Chen Zhi nodded with satisfaction. Sure enough, the second beta test was much better than the first.
The players had a direction, and he had a direction too.
"Great Lord of Calamity, Miss Saina is waiting outside for your audience," Susan said, her voice trembling slightly.
No matter when, speaking to this terrifying god made her feel afraid.
Even if this god was very generous to her.
"Let her in." As soon as Chen Zhi finished speaking, Saina entered from outside the door. She gave Susan a cold, sidelong glance, then lowered her head and said to Chen Zhi, "The Mutated Rats you asked me to investigate, I have already investigated. The City Hall orders the clearing of these Mutated Rats every year, and these rats are all sent to the War Church. Every rat is dissected because there are some substances containing spirituality inside, which are handed over to the Wealth Church for sale. It counts as a hidden income for the City Hall."
In other words, these rats were definitely worth more than the cost of clearing them.
The bounty for one player's head was 500 Tana; one could imagine how valuable these rats were.
"What parts are Spiritual Material?" Chen Zhi asked with some curiosity.
"There are the claws and teeth of the Mutated Rats, and the brain stems of the Mutated Rats. The others are not very valuable. Things like leather, it is said, can be used to make leather gloves to prevent Spiritual Material from sticking to one's hands. But I have never seen such an operation."
He was an Evil God, yet he seemed to know nothing.
He didn't even know as much as she, a Believer, did.
Saina had also only found out after asking Evans.
Could it be... that this Evil God had forgotten many things because he had regained his sanity?
It must be so. The Lord of Calamity in the past couldn't even speak a complete sentence, and every order issued was accompanied by rage. If she hadn't hidden far away, she would definitely have offended this god.
Fortunately, when she met this god, he was no longer that powerful.
"Hmm, Spiritual Material, can we sell it?" Chen Zhi asked.
"Uh... I'm not too sure about that. I can, I can help ask." Saina hesitated for the first time; she didn't know if Evans would be willing to tell her.
For a long time, Evans had been hindering her from coming into contact with the extraordinary world under the pretext of it being for her own good.
It was only through her own painstaking efforts that she had come into contact with an Evil God.
Chen Zhi felt it was feasible. "You are going to ask that gentleman named Evans, right?"
"You... Great Lord of Calamity, your loyal Believer is not trying to hide anything from you." Saina was much more humble this time.
"It's fine. If it's convenient for him, he can come over. After all, he knows where I am, doesn't he? I have some things I want to say to him; at least making a deal is no problem." Chen Zhi felt he had shown the greatest friendliness. Evans was the extraordinary person he understood the most; perhaps he could provide a different development path for the players.
Saina returned to the Municipal Hall with a bit of sorrow, staring blankly beside her desk.
She didn't know whether to bring Evans before the Evil God. If she didn't bring him, she didn't know what kind of harm Evans would suffer.
To her, Evans was like a father. If she lost such a steward, she wouldn't be able to manage so many of her assets.
From the moment the Lord of Calamity spoke Evans's name today, she knew the Evil God was not simple.
He had never seen Evans, nor had he ever heard her mention him, yet he actually knew him.
Could it be those newly fabricated Believers?
Those guys couldn't even speak clearly; how could they possibly tell the Lord of Calamity Evans's name?
After sending Saina away, Chen Zhi met with Andrew again.
This old guy had been in high spirits recently. Andrew, who had originally been very tight on funds, had much more for publicity expenses because of Chen Zhi's funding.
However, according to Chen Zhi's instructions, he didn't dare to spend recklessly, only letting those destitute Believers have a few more ways to make a living.
For example, opening a restaurant and hiring two new Believers to help out.
Or leasing a few plots of land for farming and reclamation.
He also contracted a small hotel. This hotel could house over three hundred people at full capacity—of course, that was in a situation where it was overcrowded. Those poor homeless Believers, as well as the new Believers, no longer had to live in the Sewers.
Sure enough, the Lord of Calamity did not just bring Calamity; He was also a merciful god.
