Chapter 78: Foreigners Kill Commander Qin
On Chongming Road, soldiers of the German First Battalion were armed with loaded guns, their steel helmets flashing cold light under the streetlamps. They blocked the entire street so that nothing could pass, the dark gun barrels aimed at the patrol officers crouching on the ground.
The men in the police station crouched on the ground with their heads in their hands, their uniforms soaked with cold sweat. The gunshots that had just rang out from inside the Great Three Yuan already foreshadowed that Mutou Chiyu's fate was grim. Yet now they could barely protect themselves, let alone think about anything else.
In the coffee shop at the street corner, several patrol captains knelt on the ground, their faces ashen. They watched their subordinates being disarmed by German soldiers, yet dared not even let out a single fart. Lei Nuo had the police protect Mutou Chiyu? That was an enormous joke.
In the night, the lights of the Great Three Yuan shone brightly, yet looked especially grim. A few passing pedestrians, seeing the scene, quickened their steps and hurried away. No one dared to look again at that moment, fearing trouble.
Qin Dong Zhi, accompanied by his secretary Li Mingze and several guards, hurried toward the sedan parked by the roadside. His expression was gloomy, a vague unease stirring within him. Lin Yu's final words lodged in his throat like a fishbone.
Would that madman really let himself go so easily?
The atmosphere on Chongming Road grew increasingly tense, as if ready to explode at any moment. The cold gazes of the German soldiers swept the street, sending a chill down people's spines. This was destined to be an unsettled night.
"Commander," Li Mingze whispered, leaning close to Qin Dong Zhi's ear, "this Lin Yu is probably not as simple as he appears."
Qin Dong Zhi said nothing, merely squinting as he stared ahead. In the night, his old‑fox‑like face revealed no expression at all.
"He dared to kill Mutou Chiyu right before you in the Great Three Yuan; that kind of audacity…" Li Mingze paused, then added, "Such ruthless tactics, even the warlords wouldn't be any worse."
"I know," Qin Dong Zhi said coldly, "He's warning me."
The night wind swept Chongming Road, bringing a hint of chill. Under the streetlamps, the steel helmets of the German soldiers glimmered with cold light, while the patrol officers remained kneeling on the ground, trembling.
"Should we…" Li Mingze began, then stopped. As Qin Dong Zhi's confidant, he knew his commander's influence in Shen City well. Yet at this moment, an inexplicable unease crept over him.
"Let's go back first and discuss later," Qin Dong Zhi cut off his words, his steps unintentionally quickening a few paces.
Behind them, the Great Three Yuan now felt especially oppressive. Everything that had just occurred inside made the old fox's heart race.
In a private room of the Great Three Yuan, Lin Yu stood by the window, the cigarette in his hand flickering dimly in the darkness. Through the floor‑to‑ceiling window, he quietly watched Qin Dong Zhi hurry away below.
Uncertain whether he sensed that cold gaze, Qin Dong Zhi suddenly halted, instinctively turned his head back and looked toward the second floor.
Their gazes intersected in the night.
At that moment, Qin Dong Zhi shivered all over. He clearly saw the unabashed murderous intent in Lin Yu's eyes, like a beast that had fixed on its prey—cold and ruthless.
He had seen that look on the battlefield before. It was the gaze only a true desperado would possess.
"Commander?" Li Mingze sensed something amiss and followed Qin Dong Zhi's gaze.
The night wind swept Chongming Road again, bringing a hint of chill. Under the streetlamps, the steel helmets of the German soldiers still glimmered with cold light. Qin Dong Zhi stood rooted, unmoving.
He knew Lin Yu was telling him: this was not over yet.
The figure in the private room remained motionless, that gaze like a sword hanging overhead, making the old fox feel unprecedented pressure.
At that moment, the Great Three Yuan's main doors were suddenly forced open, and three blood‑splattered Japanese guards rushed out.
"Baka!" they shouted, brandishing pistols and screaming like madmen, charging straight at Qin Dong Zhi.
The guards beside Qin Dong Zhi, well‑trained, instantly formed a wall. They raised their guns and aimed, moving cleanly and efficiently. These were confidants the old fox had carefully selected, each a battle‑hardened expert.
But the foreigners moved even faster; two bang‑bang gunshots rang out, and a guard fell to the ground. The remaining guards returned fire immediately; a Japanese guard took a bullet in the shoulder, yet he seemed oblivious to the pain and kept charging wildly.
"Protect the commander!" the guards shielded Qin Dong Zhi and Li Mingze in the middle, forming a defensive circle. Soldiers of the German First Battalion were nearby, yet never fired a shot to intervene.
Gunfire rose and fell along Chongming Road. Just as the guards were about to gain control, a crisp sniper crack echoed from the street corner.
A guard clutched his chest and fell. The sudden sniper shot shattered the original balance. The remaining guards had to split their attention, searching for the sniper's position.
The Japanese guard seized the opportunity, recklessly charging forward. Two more sniper cracks rang out, completely breaching the line of two guards.
"For Lord Mutou…"
Three blood‑splattered foreigners rushed to Qin Dong Zhi's front, hatred and madness blazing in their eyes.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Three gunshots rang almost simultaneously. Qin Dong Zhi's chest erupted in three blossoms of blood; he looked down in disbelief, then collapsed heavily into the pool of blood.
From the second‑floor window, Lin Yu watched everything silently, a cold smile curling at his mouth. He knew the meticulously crafted plan had finally been completed.
On Chongming Road, the German soldiers only then began to close in slowly. But the sniper had already vanished without a trace, and the three Japanese guards lay dead beside Qin Dong Zhi's corpse.
Everything happened too quickly, yet it made sense. No one would have guessed that this was a carefully staged performance.
Lin Yu leisurely smoothed his clothes, casually extinguishing the cigarette in his hand. He turned and glanced at Mutou Chiyu's corpse on the ground, a faint, ambiguous smile tugging at his lips.
"Let's go down and take a look," he said to the members of the Fourth Bureau beside him.
A few of them hurried downstairs to Chongming Road. The street was now in chaos, panicked pedestrians everywhere. Several corpses lay in pools of blood; Li Mingze knelt beside Qin Dong Zhi, still in shock.
"Secretary Li, what exactly happened?" Lin Yu asked, frowning, his voice tinged with urgency.
The question seemed to snap Li Mingze out of his daze. He grabbed Qin Dong Zhi's collar hard and began shaking wildly.
"Commander! Commander! Quickly! Find a car to take the commander to the hospital!" Li Mingze shouted hoarsely, "Someone help! Call a doctor!"
Lin Yu immediately ordered the surrounding German soldiers: "Check Commander Qin's condition quickly, and bring a vehicle right away!" His voice was steady and powerful, as if everything were under his control.
"These damned Japanese bastards!" Li Mingze suddenly lost his composure, pointing at the dead Japanese guard on the ground and shouting, "They killed the commander! They killed him to avenge Mutou Chiyu, and actually…"
His voice was filled with grief and resentment, tears streaming uncontrollably: "The commander was so courteous to them, how could they… how could they…"
Lin Yu stood nearby, a deep sorrow on his face: "Secretary Li, my condolences; the most important thing now is to get Commander Qin to the hospital, there might still be a chance of saving him."
But they all knew the three bullet holes in Qin Dong Zhi's chest left no hope of survival.
The smell of blood on Chongming Road grew stronger, and the German soldiers began to seal off the scene. No one noticed the faint, icy smile flashing in Lin Yu's eyes.
The performance finally drew its curtain.
