Chapter 77: You Still Don't Understand Me

~7 min read 1,255 words

"Do you know?" Lin Yu took a deep drag, his gaze icy, "What I hate most is your high‑and‑mighty attitude."

"High‑and‑mighty?" Qin Dong Zhi sneered, "Lin Inspector, have you got something wrong?"

He straightened his collar, his expression arrogant: "I kindly invited you and the Wu Teng Envoy to sit down and talk, yet you not only messed things up, but now you dare threaten me?"

"Who do you think you are?" Qin Dong Zhi's tone grew more contemptuous, "A foreign Inspector, and you dare flaunt your power in Shen City?"

"Let me tell you," he stared at Lin Yu, a cold glint flashing in his eyes, "In this Shen City, without my Qin Dong Zhi's approval, you can do nothing!"

"You killed Wu Teng Qianqiu, already made a huge mess. Now you still dare be disrespectful to me—do you want to make the trouble even bigger?"

He snorted coldly, "Do you really think that having the title of Inspector lets you do whatever you want in Shen City?"

"Young man," Qin Dong Zhi shook his head, his tone full of sarcasm, "You are still too young. The waters of Shen City run deep."

"If you're sensible, set me free at once. Otherwise…" He gave Lin Yu a meaning‑laden look, "The consequences will be beyond what you can bear."

"From start to finish, I've known this old bastard's scheme." Lin Yu exhaled a smoke ring, his gaze icy.

"On the surface you play the mediator, arranging talks between the two sides. In reality, you are eager for me to kill Wu Teng Qianqiu, that Japanese devil, during the negotiations, to completely break ties with the Japanese Empire."

He sneered, looking at Qin Dong Zhi: "When the Ninth Division arrives, you'll be able to stay out of it, watching me get dealt with by the Japanese. In the end you'll report to the court and shift all blame onto me, Lin Yu."

"You're truly scheming, Commander Qin." Lin Yu's voice carried sarcasm, "After all these years in Shen City, your methods are still so insidious."

Qin Dong Zhi's expression remained calm, neither confirming nor denying. He stared steadily at Lin Yu, a hint of profundity flashing in his eyes.

"What do you want?" Old Fox spoke, his voice steady.

"Ha!" Lin Yu sneered, "You, Qin Dong Zhi, still don't understand me, Lin Yu."

He stepped forward one pace, "You dared bring Wu Teng Qianqiu here to negotiate with me, which only means you calculated that, as a mere Inspector, Fourth Bureau Chief, even if I dared kill Wu Teng, I wouldn't dare touch you."

"You've been operating in Shen City for years, commanding heavy troops, with deep roots. Even the court must give you a sliver of face."

Lin Yu's voice grew even colder, "You think I wouldn't dare move against you, the Security Commander, right?"

"So that's why you dare play this trick here, isn't it?" He stared into Qin Dong Zhi's eyes, "Do you think I would really let you get your way?"

Qin Dong Zhi narrowed his eyes, a sudden unease rising in his heart.

The gaze of this young man before him reminded him of the desperados he had seen on battlefields years ago.

That kind of reckless, fearless madness.

Could it be… he really dares?

No, impossible!

After running affairs in Shen City for so many years, even the court wouldn't dare act against him lightly.

No matter how arrogant Lin Yu becomes, he's still just a foreign Inspector.

He wouldn't dare!

Lin Yu looked at Qin Dong Zhi with extreme contempt, his gaze as if viewing a dying man, full of mockery and amusement.

"You're right," he gently exhaled a smoke ring, "Now the Ninth Division is storming in; if I, Lin Yu, act against you, Qin Dong Zhi, your thirty‑thousand troops probably couldn't accommodate me."

"I have no explanation for the court either," Lin Yu said lightly, as if discussing a trivial matter.

But the next moment, his voice turned cold, "But Commander Qin, you've forgotten something."

"What if, under everyone's eyes, the Japanese kill you, old fox?"

Turbulent waves of terror surged in Qin Dong Zhi's heart.

He finally understood Lin Yu's meaning.

If he dies at the hands of the Japanese, it would be a different scene.

By then, not only would the court not pursue the matter, it would instead make a big fuss out of it. His thirty‑thousand troops would, in fury, fight the Japanese without rest.

And Lin Yu would reap the fisherman's profit.

This madman!

He actually dares to hatch such a plan!

Cold sweat on Qin Dong Zhi's forehead grew denser. He suddenly realized he might have truly underestimated this young man.

Lin Yu isn't unwilling to act against him; he's plotting a larger scheme!

As Qin Dong Zhi's heart quivered with fear, Lin Yu abruptly snuffed out his cigarette, revealing a meaning‑laden smile.

"Commander Qin," he said with a light laugh, "Just a joke with you."

"Now, you may leave."

Qin Dong Zhi finally exhaled a sigh of relief, but he knew this was far from a simple joke.

This is a naked warning!

Lin Yu was telling him that if he dares to pull any tricks, this will be the outcome.

Old Fox wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and, without looking back, briskly left the private room.

Until he walked out of Da San Yuan, he only then felt he could breathe again.

Lin Yu watched Qin Dong Zhi's departing back, a cold smile curling his mouth. He turned, his gaze landing on the three guards of Wu Teng Qianqiu.

Those guards were still kneeling in the pool of blood, trembling all over.

"Gentlemen," Lin Yu's voice suddenly softened, "I'll give you a chance."

The three guards lifted their heads tremblingly, not understanding what trick this madman intended now.

"Very simple," Lin Yu pulled a Colt pistol from his coat and waved it before them, "Run out and kill Qin Dong Zhi."

The guards' eyes widened, unable to believe what they had heard.

"First," Lin Yu raised a finger, "Kill Qin Dong Zhi, and I can give you a way out. You can safely leave Shen City."

"Second," he raised a second finger, his tone casual, "You can claim that Qin Dong Zhi killed the Wu Teng Envoy, that you avenged the Envoy. The Japanese Empire won't hold you accountable."

The three guards exchanged glances, their throats bobbing as they spoke.

They glanced at Wu Teng Qianqiu's bloodied, mangled corpse on the ground, then at the pistol in Lin Yu's hand.

This proposal is indeed tempting.

But...

"How?" Lin Yu's voice suddenly turned cold, "Still hesitating?"

He glanced at his watch: "I'll give you three seconds."

"If after three seconds you don't move to kill Qin Dong Zhi," he raised his handgun, the pitch-black muzzle aimed at the guards, "I'll send you to accompany Envoy Mutou."

Sweat beaded on the guards' foreheads.

They knew this madman meant what he said.

Just like he had just killed Envoy Mutou without hesitation.

"Three..."

Lin Yu began the countdown.

The guards' breathing grew ragged.

"Two..."

They exchanged a glance, both filled with struggle.

"One..."

"Damn it!"

A guard suddenly sprang up, snatched the handgun Lin Yu threw, and rushed out of the private room.

The other two guards followed closely behind.

Lin Yu stood by the window, watching them pursue Qin Dong Zhi's retreating figure, the corner of his mouth curling into a cold smile.

This show has only just begun.
