Chapter 56: Quarantine

~7 min read 1,304 words

The guards and soldiers pressed them together.

It wasn't appropriate to see blood at the city gate, so the assassination order wasn't executed immediately, but fear instantly filled the crowd.

After all, they had seen those NPCs who had their bodies pierced because of plague infection.

Sera was so scared she covered her mouth and pulled Su Mian, whose brows were tightly furrowed.

The carriage was urgently quarantined. The farmers passing by saw this formation and clicked their tongues in wonder, fiddling with their pipes as they pushed the small carts mixed with stone and sand into the town.

Adrian: "How could this happen? Could it be that the mine really has a problem?"

"Remove the 'could it be'; there is definitely a problem there."

Su Mian was being pressed, looking sideways to whisper to Adrian. The two hunched their backs and leaned in quietly.

"But one point is very strange: only the players' foreheads turned black, while the nuns and farmers who went with us are fine."

Adrian's lips were pursed tightly. "Someone is targeting us."

"You two, we are going to die; what are you still discussing here?"

Bruce was anxious and impatient. Adrian whispered in a low voice.

"We won't die. Those City-State players will definitely also be detected as being infected with the plague."

"There are too many of us with different classes and prominent identities. This purification rite involves a complex and huge system of people. The soldiers won't act easily."

Hearing Adrian's explanation, Bruce relaxed a little.

Su Mian walked forward with deep and shallow steps, swaying and almost falling forward. She lowered her head and "tsked."

Turning her head with difficulty, she raised her moist eyes to look at the soldier who was escorting her.

"Sir, my waist is not good; walking like this will be very uncomfortable."

The soft voice drilled into his ears. The soldier was immediately nervous and at a loss. Even though he was wearing gloves, the palm holding the girl's wrist became scorching hot.

"Sorry, you, you can stand up straight, but don't let the leader see."

Of course, she wouldn't be seen standing up straight; after all, Su Mian was only 1.65 meters tall.

She pulled the corners of her mouth, her eye tails curved, and she mumbled a "thank you" before immediately returning to a deadpan face.

Adrian and Bruce beside her finished watching this scene in surprise and silently digested the shocked emotions alone.

The soldiers took them to a quarantine zone surrounded by iron fences.

The ground here hadn't been repaired; it was pitted, and a few white ducks floated in the muddy water.

Men, women, and children wearing striped isolation suits looked out from the windows, and the sound of coughing came one after another. The soldiers shouted a few times to drive them away.

The nauseating musty smell and mud smell were mixed together. The environment was so bad it was unbearable to look at. They were locked in a high, dim yellow room, with nothing but a few scattered white rattan chairs.

Bruce bumped Adrian's shoulder.

"Hey, I just saw those people who were locked up; they were all coughing to some extent."

"You mean..."

Bruce guessed, "Could this plague be some kind of pneumonia?"

"Yes." Su Mian continued his words, "It is pneumonia."

"Adrian's father is the NPC who first mentioned the plague pathogen, and this provided us with a train of thought."

"The plague outbreak is because of a virus, not evil spirits. And why the outbreak location is in Millford is because the smog is severe. Living here for a long time, the body will naturally be attacked by the virus, leading to lung infection."

"It just so happened that a supernatural event occurred at the Anvil Fortress at this time, so everyone thought it was caused by evil spirits."

She paced in the room, and all gazes converged.

"Once the virus starts to spread, it will be endless. The reason I am so sure is that people from the City-State didn't wear veils, which can also explain that only Millford has severe smog."

"And most people in the quarantine zone are coughing, which cleverly confirms this point."

"Then how do you explain the holy water turning black?"

Adrian asked. Su Mian didn't have a clue either and could only wait until the players from the City-State Center were brought over before making plans.

Dinner was a pot of rough rice porridge mixed with potatoes, cabbage, and carrots. The players were called out one by one for a full-body check and, by the way, changed into isolation suits.

Su Mian grabbed one casually, but didn't expect it to be very wide. The cuffs hung down softly, covering her fingertips, and the neckline almost slipped from her thin shoulders.

Adrian, who was standing in line for the check, stood behind Su Mian. He looked at the girl who was completely unaware and wanted to say something, but then looked away in embarrassment.

In the end, Sera found a safety pin and tightened Su Mian's neckline.

A group of people stayed in the quarantine zone for three days, and could only go out during meal and check times.

No useful news was obtained, and the City-State players were slow to arrive.

Delaying was a torture in itself, wearing down the players' hope and reason.

Su Mian's constitution wasn't good to begin with. The daily blood draws and nutritionless food severely ruined her body.

The needle holes on her fair wrists were red and abrupt. The thin isolation suit couldn't block the cold wind. The girl started coughing with her back turned, her thin shoulder blades like a pair of butterfly wings about to break.

Bruce finally couldn't help it. "How long will it take for them to let us go? We're almost getting sick without even having a disease. I've truly had enough!"

"Let you go?"

The soldier at the door seemed to have heard a funny joke.

"Infection with the plague is a dead end. Keeping you now is because the priest is merciful and has delayed your crimes."

"Once the Baptism Day passes, you will all go to see the Grim Reaper."

Sera patted Su Mian's back, her eyes a bit scared. She asked Adrian, "How long until Baptism Day?"

Adrian wanted to say something but stopped.

"... One day later."

"What?!!!"

"One day? Only one day left?!!!"

A tall, bald player slammed his fist against the wall, his knuckles turning white instantly, startling everyone.

"I knew it! I knew I shouldn't have listened to you!"

He roared, his voice echoing in the dark yellow space.

The bald man rushed to Su Mian in a few steps, his huge shadow covering her thin body.

Sera screamed in fear and wanted to block him, but was pushed away roughly.

He grabbed Su Mian's shoulders with both hands and slammed her hard into the corner of the wall.

"It's all you! Silent all day long. I thought you were capable. Where are the clues? Where is the murderer? Where?!!!"

Taylor's spit almost sprayed onto Su Mian's face, and the bloodshot eyes were frighteningly red.

"A piece of paper bluffed you into obedience. How brilliant! Now it's not right, and we're all going to finish together! You cough! Cough to death! Anyway, it's a death sooner or later!"

Su Mian's back hit the stone wall heavily with a muffled sound.

The violent impact made her vision go black, and the cough she couldn't suppress rushed to her throat. She curled up, coughing heart-rendingly.

She bit her lower lip, trying to swallow the blood in her throat, but a trace of blood still seeped from the corner of her mouth, dripping onto the gray isolation suit, blooming into a small, shocking red group. ===== CHAPTER 57 =====
